  1. Are you sure drum corps isn't EVER cute??? Nope, no one ever called anything about the below cute, not ever...
  2. Cool, thanks. I was shooting for a bit of confusion, just trying to be silly, really...
  3. Since these words get thrown around a lot in show reviews and descriptions AND since we tend to mince words around here a LOT, I thought this poll might be fun. Are cheese and cute synonymous? My synopsis is sometimes. Personally I can dig cheese and think almost every drum corps show has some dairy to some degree. Well placed cheddar is tasty and effective. I can even dig a cheese-wiz coating at times when it's fun like the VK shows of days past. Cute is something that tends to turn me off a bit with drum corps shows. Sometimes in SMALL doses cute is cool like in that bad*** '88 Suncoast Sound show. Sometimes it's painfully distracting from a cool show (Cadets '10, IMO). So, in conclusion to this silly rant, cheese CAN be cool but isn't always. Cute is almost always also cheesy, but sometimes not and I guarantee this post will, at some point, descend into a semantics oriented argument. Enjoy, folks!
  4. No one's shoveling dirt, just saying the undefeated streak is over. It was absolutely an amazing accomplishment and it may never happen again for them or anyone else. Without a doubt, BD will continue to be a force in the drum corps world whether or not they win a single show this season, which they undoubtedly will.
  5. http://www.dci.org/scores/ Scores up, RACH on!
  6. Good points on why corps were able to field complete shows by the first of June back then. This setup was dependent on the fact that there were several local drum corps to choose from in any given region, making those once a week rehearsals possible. Now, instead of twelve corps right around the corner, there are MAYBE 12 on your entire coast. I think corps do the best they can to get in as much rehearsal as possible before the season starts. While I'm not a fan of fielding an incomplete show, I think the corps are doing the best they can with the modern climate of having members from all over. Most corps have only four TOTAL weeks of rehearsal before the season with half of that time spread through weekend chunks in the winter and the other half finally all together in a mad dash to begin the season. I'm amazed that any group can have a complete product under those constraints.
  7. Been on the receiving end myself. In rehearsal my rookie year, flags had a pass through with us. The girl going through started spinning a hair early and the stopper of her flag slammed me in the temple at the exact moment I stepped in a hole in the field. Translation -- me and my contra meet the ground very ungracefully smashing the horn. The worst part of the whole deal was having to break out one of the older horns for a couple weeks while a new one was located. The thing smelled like a toilet and felt like it was filled with some bricks for extra weight. Ahhhh...memories.
  8. Okay, let me clarify since every thread on here seems to fall into a battle of semantics. No SINGLE corps determines the when the start of their season falls, therefore, the mutually agreed upon date is what we have to work with, regardless of whether or not Corps X, Y, or Z would like to have a show a bit sooner. Also, it wouldn't make much sense to start the season any sooner as many of the public schools around the country are just letting out. In other words, long story short, etc. The start date of the season as June 18th is just fine. *edited to add some more thoughts*
  9. First off, there is no rule stating that there shall be only one dress rehearsal. The existence of a few 2nd dress rehearsals tells us exactly that. There are a few second dress rehearsals out there. The season is starting at *about* the same time it always does, so no, nothing can be done about that. The start of the season is directly tied to the ending of the school year and having some time to rehearse after school is out and before hitting the road. As far as corps being reluctant to perform, I don't think so. The season just starts when it starts and corps will rehearse until that time. Corps don't set the start date of the season, so corps only performing dress rehearsals at this point is simply the only option.
  10. I agree completely here. Drum corps breeds an atmosphere of quick-thinking, quick-memory. I know without a doubt that participating in the activity had an impact on my personal cognitive abilities. I think the root of high-level retention skills comes from training the mind to focus on the task at hand (be in the moment) rather than allowing yourself to be distracted. High-level performance in any arena demands the ability to adapt and learn quickly.
  11. Anybody at the preview show tonight? Pics, news? plz....
  12. Good to see you back posting news from Cadet world, Irving. I read almost all of your updates last year. Thanks!
  13. This thread is full of winning. If we all did this on chat roulette, we might increase show attendance. lol
  14. So many, many, many examples. Here's just a couple from when I marched. Frequent after show snack team-ups with the Cadets during which we hung out and got to know many of their members. Finals week '97 shared housing site with Cavaliers and shared meals (adjacent ballrooms at a Disney resort, best housing site ever!). They even had a barber station at their food truck one day that they offered up. Sure, this is a competitive activity where everyone wants their show to reach the top, but drum corps truly is a village where everyone helps one another (mostly).
  15. I like the new look to the forum. Sorry if I'm late in the uptake, but I tend to stay away once the season is over until the first of the year. I did notice that there are affiliate marketing links sprinkled in now, having nothing to do with drum corps or music. Just wondering if the people who run DCP are doing some affiliate marketing or if it's part of the forum platform??
  16. I think the only way this could work and be viable from a betting standpoint would be at major regionals and the betting be for something like 12-15. Smaller shows tend to have too much disparity between the corps. While the "slotting" argument need not be brought up here, I think most of us can agree that groupings tend to happen naturally over the season making this a tough thing to bet. This does have my poker mind racing though to come up with a way to do this that is appropriately random. I've often wondered if I could get a corps to do a charity poker tournament fund raiser. I'd love to help organize/participate in something like that. But I guess I'm off topic now...
  17. On topic, very cool that Crown was recognized in this manner. Off topic, I agree with corpsband in the fact that volunteers would drool over the opportunity to aid in having DCI sanctioned youtube videos available for the masses. In my opinion, DCI has cut themselves off from gaining new fans by not exploiting the youtube thing. Marketers have been using youtube for years to gain traffic, fans, customers, etc. Individual corps even use youtube for videos they produce. Millions of people look at youtube every day and DCI should get in on that for sure.
  18. Still hoping for Zappa, though Gail would have to quit being so stingy with the rights to his music. But... Peaches en Regalia Anything from The Yellow Shark or anything from Strictly Genteel would be pure gold in drum corps arrangement!
  19. Very well said. The influence is definitely all over the drum corps world.
  20. Contact the corps you most want to be a part of and talk to the staff. Get a feel for what they're really about, get an idea of what is expected of you, and go for it. If you don't end up making it on your first try, no big deal, you're sure to learn a great deal just in the process and probably still have a chance to audition for another corps. But, get on it! Those years of junior corps eligibility slip by fast and then they're gone forever. Go make it happen and you'll never regret it.
  21. Don't know exactly but your membership cost will probably be in the $1000-$2000 range and then you have to figure in travel to and from camps, spending money for tour, etc...
  22. Congrats to all 2010 corps! This has been my favorite season in quite some time. I was astounded by the high level of performance I saw all around. Great job on a great season everyone!
