  1. My two cents: Balance your playing. Oftentimes, playing in corps is always about louder and higher, and thats cool- its what we do. The problem with this is that when you consistently do that for 3 months without sitting down and playing at an easy "concert" pianissimo or low in the staff, you can lose a lot of flexibility and delude yourself into thinking that drum corps playing is normal. I would simply suggest taking 5-10 minutes during dinner break or 4th meal and do some low, easy long tones and lip slurs, making sure to focus on EASE of playing.
  2. Unless you were sponsored by Omaha steaks and a Napa Valley Winery, you'd go broke within the year. Kanstul just can't afford the sponsorships that the bigger players are giving to top-tier corps.
  3. Trumpet - Yamaha Mello- Yamaha Baritone - Kanstul Contra - Kanstul Done. :P The only reason that Kanstul horns seem more expensive is that the company does not give bulk discounts to corps. They're a smaller company compared to King/Yamaha/Jupiter, so its not smart business practice for them to offer sponsorship on the level on the level of those brands. I haven't had a chance to play their trombones yet (as I am a trombone player), but I've heard good things.
  4. No offense taken- just putting the scores out there.
  5. Hmm... I dont know where you saw Pacific Crest scoring a 62, but the most recent score was a 67.2, and before that a 66.5. And from what I've seen, the show isn't all out on the field, so i expect the GE score to rise once they put it out there.
  6. The Bach strats are great, but you'll have to try a few to find one that plays well. On the other hand, the Yamaha Xenos play pretty amazingly from what I've heard, and are extremely consistent. Between a good Bach and a Xeno, it'd be up to whatever feels right for you.
  7. I think SCV will be a medal contender. Their design could either work for or against them depending on what position the judges take.
  8. The best corps should always win. If a corps that is not the best ends up winning, we lose all progression and innovation in the activity.
  9. But isnt championships a week later this year?
  10. The best way to explain the tradition would be to understand what people give up to march. Whether you march 1, 3, 5, or- dare I say- 7 years in DCI, you give up a lot of things you could otherwise being doing. You give up your summers, your weekends, a LOT of $$$, and in many instances, the health of your knees. After experiencing something that touches you as much as living and performing with your adopted family for months on end, the activity shapes who you are and what you will become in the future. Leaving something on the field after your last performance ever is a way to say that you're leaving a little part of yourself on that field, and no matter how much you wish you could continue having those experiences, you are done. Forever. Its a way to recognize that a very significant chapter in your life has come to an end, and I'm sure that anyone who has aged out will back me up on that.
  11. I'm pretty sure DCI just throws all of them out. They don't have the money/storage space to take everything and put it somewhere.
  12. The two day show would mess with I and E...
  13. What difficulty are you looking at? I would recommend different pieces depending on what you want to show off. Do you want to play a more lyrical piece, or something technical?
  14. Buying a full trumpet line of Bach Strats would fold a corps by itself. Nice horns though.
  15. I do have to say that Kanstul Brass has a lot of good things going for it. The only problem for drum corps is that you guys dont offer bulk deals as you stated earlier. For anyone that is looking for a new trombone though, I would definitely check out the Kanstul line.
  16. It would be nice if they learned how to tune though...
  17. You got them mixed up. When Gordon first got to UCLA he was able to obtain permission from the higher ups at The Colosseum (back when both schools played there) to pull the prank. When UCLA went into the script UCLA that they do at the end of their pregame show, all of the band's members pulled open some bleach packets that they had attached to their ankles and voila! the letters U-C-L-A were bleached into the field for not only that game, but a few afterwards. USC was not happy about it, but no one at UCLA got into trouble because he had permission.
  18. I think I have a recording of that... Let me give a crack at it, and then get back to you.
