  1. We use RH but we sand off the slippery stain to feel the wood. We have also used Coopermans sticks but they are expensive over $20.00 a pair for snare sticks. We still use their Rud. Bass sticks though. There are SO MANY sticks out there these days to choose from, all with different weights, beads etc. Gone are they days when you used 2S or 3S,That was your choice. I think Pro-Mark came out with the first "radical" stick the DC10 that had no bead back in the 70's. I still have my Dad's old LEEDY 2S sticks that are 58 years old. i can feel the wear on the sticks from my dad using them for so long. I still have my original LUDWIG 3S from 1964' ,still use them on an old Ludwig rubber pad at home.
  2. Those cotton web slings were used for YEARS with much success for snare tenor bass drums triples AND marching TYMPANI!! prior to the introduction of the carrier/harness. I personaly liked the CADET Model for the bass drums. It had a waist belt and two criss crossed shoulder straps. Never liked the STANDARD model.
  3. Then some guy decided "hey lets make em play two drums at the same time"! Hence the CHROMO-WOOD models which were wood shells wrapped in STEEL!! LUDWIG and S-LAND both has these. The "warmth" of wood combined wth the "crispness" of metal so one of the ads said.. And the WEIGHT of an anvil!!!!
  4. We had double tenors 14-16 triples 14-16-18 and timps in the Guelph Royalaires in 74. Often wondered how the BACKS of the guys are these days who lugged these mothers around. Hey and don't forget there were NO CARRIERS back then just two criscrossed drum slings!!!. The timps if I recall had a leg rest. Slingerland came out with a "carrier" that weighed almost as much as the drums.STEEL tubing with a HARD plastic "pad" for the shoulders. Always found that S-LAND drums weighed more than LUDWIG for some reason.
  5. Have an old "U" shaped one.It would need a bit of a clean up(rust) and paint, missing the foam belly pad.PM me.Used them with the old ARC CARRIER harness of the 70's
  6. The cotton web sling was used for MANY years before the harness-carrier was invented. I would recomend the black LUDWIG "CADET" model as opposed to the standard model. The Cadet has a waist belt with two cross straps that have the snap eyes to attach to the ring hooks on the bass drum.
  7. John Simpson USAF and Lloyd Hatt St Joes of Batavia
  8. We have 4 14 "DYNASTY Wedge model snare drums 1 24" DYNASTY Bass drum All are BLACK with silver hardware and have carriers and cases.
  9. OK I'm a drummer but played a Bb valveless bugle as a young kid and trumpet in HS for 9 months(broken arm) I can only relate to what my horn buddies have said that the G horns have a bigger bore making it more "powerful" as opposed to the trumpet which many have told me should stay in the band room!!!! Hey Im a drummer!! .I always wondered though WHY do all the "other " brass instruments in the band ie: French Horns Baritones Tubas etc point upward?? Many of us oldtimers will recall one of the most famous Corps of all who played Bb-F horns in 10 part harmony!! SCOUT HOUSE! They even jhad a specially made Eb horn to augment the brass line.Their Alumni are now still playing 3 valve Bb horns and the crowd loves them where ever they go! Oh and by the way US MARINE DBC used Bb valve horns as well back in the day when playing with the USM Band then switched to the G-D or later G-F-F# horns when doing their show. The current Corps still plays on 2 valve horns.
  10. WHERE are you located?

  11. Check with the Toronto Optimist Alumni DON DABER did a lot of the work on the book with Al.Don "may" have a copy or two laying around.
  12. John Simpson USAF DBC Lloyd Hatt St. Joesph's of Batavia Bobby La Duca Hamburg Kingsmen Cindy Davis Armstrong(First female in US MARINE DBC) You HAD to be good to be a Marine soloist!!
  13. But is it HER dream to march in 15 years????????????? Don't become one of those parents that lives THEIR dream through the kid.IF she wants to learn to play a drum FINE if she wants to play a violin piano do ballet jazz etc thats FINE TOO!! How old is she now 4? Might want to wait until she is at least 7 to start. Also is she going to be capable to CARRY a drum?? Will she grow to say 5'7'' 5'8'' or will she be small 5'1'' etc The drums these days are responsable for many back/knee problems later in life due to extreme weight.IMHO even the carrier adds weight. I played a 12x15 ten lug snare with a sling and I have back/knee issues 35 years later. Some were wood some were metal some were wood AND metal. The IDIOT who invented "CHROME O WOOD" should be shot!!. Take a deep breath dad let her make HER choice she's only 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Anyone know WHERE the Drum Companies get the material they use for "gut snares" these days? It's not the 'traditional gut" we used years ago but a synthetic material. I am refurbishing a couple of 12x15 10 lug LUDWIG Challengers and Slingerland TDR'S and need snares.I can get snsares for 14" LUDWIGS no problem but 15" are very hard to find becuase of the size. Ive tried using tennis stringing but the sound is too thin for my liking
  15. Try BARRY KADANE The Drum Percussion Doctor out on Long Island West Babylon I believe. He has a warehouse FULL of marching percussion including hard to find older model vintage stuff.REASONALBE prices too. Ive dealt with him before GREAT GUY!!
  16. Tom Garrett the Corps Director of Regionaires at that time is marching with Niagara Militaires and is ###'t Corps Director.Other Regionaires in Militaires include DON PRICE-GIL BLANCHARD-MIKE DEKKER-BILL THOMPSON-LLOYD HATT-ANDY FAKLA to name a few.
  17. I believe MCCORMICKS has a carrier like that or try 1800USABAND aka Taylor Music
  18. I'm pretty sure the guy who designed marching timps and bass drum size "triples" back in the day NEVER marched a 5 mile parade CARRYING those sob!!!!!!!!!!!! While we are at it who's great idea was it to wrap STEEL around a wood drum shell???? You are now carrying TWO drums one wood one steel and WITHOUT carriers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My back still hurts.
  19. Didn't Montage come down to REGIONAIRES in 81?
  20. I like to write 2 streetbeats per year and change them up during a parade to prevent "boredom" from my line. I write in 2/4 time 4 bars and 4/4 time 8 bars with a second ending to both to cut it off going into the roll off in a strictly 1960's rudimental style. Drummers seldom get a break from playing if at all and as the wrists and arms of us older guys get fatiguied I suggest keeping the real "tough stuff" for a standstill and make the S/B rhythmic and appealing.
  21. William "Bill" Reilly former Director and Drum Major of the ORIGINAL Niagara Memorial Militaires Trumpet Band later Drum and Bugle Corps passed away recently from complications due to liver disease. Bill along with his brother Dick were the driving force behind the Militaires and brought them into the world of M&M and the Drum Corps scene in Canada and the US. As well he was quite active with the Canadian Trumpet and Bugle Band Association later The Canadian Drum Corps Association in the early years. Bill was a member of the Corps from 1953 until 1963. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized but will take place in Hasting Ontario. The Niagara Memorial Militaires Alumni Drum Corps would like to offer our condolences to the Reilly family.
  22. The question is "Do you want to mute it or tune it?" Various ways have been used over the years from wide felt strips-pillows inside the drum-taping various things to the outside head etc.
  23. I taught a primary school K-5 drum-bell corps with a small guard for 15 years.Average age was 7-9. Our "original" drums were old 10X14 single tension wooden hooped LUDWIG parade drums snares with REAL gut snares and single tenors painted blue with yellow hoops and used slings/leg rests. We later got a set 8 "THUNDER" drums made in China. They lasted 2 years very poor sound. We then bought a set of YAMAHA POWER LITES which worked great. We now had carriers instead of slings. I used REMO " GUT TONE" snares on them and they had a great sound. For what we did they were excellent. Light weight and didnt kill the kids backs.
  24. I was with my Corps(NIAGARA MILITAIRES ALUMNI DRUM CORPS) in a parade in Burlington Ontario(anyone remember the "BURLINGTON COMMANDERS??" There was a BDC called the "CHAPPERELLES" from the US Ohio I think. 3 sn 1 tn 1 bs 2 kb I think.Man they marched FAST!!
