  1. I'm sure I sound like a broken record, but as of recent, Crown's hornline. There isn't even any comparison to that sound for me.
  2. Does anybody know of an existing video or photos of the Mona Shores 2004 show? I'd love to actually see what it looked like.
  3. This is excusable ONLY because there is a cute puppy in it.
  4. OMG. They're playing this section?! That is gonna translate to the field HELLA good.
  5. I think it's way too early to say for sure; however, I also think the shows coming out this year are setting up this season to be a great one. It could still flop, but based on shows and rep, I can't say I've been this excited for a season since....well....2000.
  6. By drummers you mean "drummers". I don't think they ever actually played.
  7. Did they ever say what the drum major uniforms will be, since the angel uniforms are (almost) the same?
  8. OMG! Guard uniforms have been unveiled! Look!
  9. Didn't you hear, these ARE the guard uniforms! I am totally posting that in the uniform thread.
  10. Seriously. You'd have thought people were expecting this.
  11. I think they keep extending the deadline until enough 2011 material rolls out for it to be worth purchasing a new subscription. We're getting more time added! It's a bonus! Let's not question it!
  12. OMG. THEN HURRY UP AND GET THE MARIMBAS OFF THE FIELD BEFORE EVERYONE FIGURES OUT THEY DON'T BELONG AND THROWS A S**T FIT!!!
  13. Why does it seem that everyone thinks the Rachmaninoff is all going to be played on the piano? Has this actually been VERIFIED?
  14. Yes, somebody please answer this! Though I totally hear the Bluecoats going for the thrashy sort of groove section in the first half, I'm secretly hoping to hear the "Spring" section in the second half, after the slower section. It's just so bright, and would sound so good with a corps..... Anybody know?
  15. Though this has been a common theme, it's also a very common theme in other art forms. I don't think this is exclusive to DCI, though I think that some corps have certainly gone about it in the wrong way. But it does make sense to me that we see so much of it. I think that part of the reason may be that, when you consider the even more basic theme behind "dark vs. light" it's essentially conflict. Conflict is what drives any good narrative-based or representative-based art form. Using opposites make for interesting art, period. Once you've set up conflict between two entities of some kind, you've got something interesting, as you have to resolve that conflict (really music in and of itself is just conflict and resolution). So why do corps choose dark vs. light as their conflict so much? My guess, and this is just a guess, is that A) it's simple, so it can be easily communicated to an audience without much confusion, and B) the theme of dark vs. light is very easy to represent through both visuals and music. The possibilities musically and visually for that theme are endless. I for one don't mind seeing this theme done a lot, however, it does get old if the treatment of it is always the same. So I totally get your concern.
  16. Careful. Queen is notorious for being anything but musically simple. I have studied their music in theory classes on more than one occasion. There's more going on there than you might think.
  17. Point taken. I guess I'm just surprised more of the top tier corps don't do his work. I can only imagine, say, Crown's sound playing his choral works. Also, in terms of Mackey, I recognize that a lot of corps play his music. I'm just hoping to hear Aurora Awakes done.
  18. :: I hate hype. It's just a uniform, why can't we know? Then again, I guess they wouldn't be withholding information if they didn't know we were so eager to have it....
  19. Extreme Make-over by Johan de Meij. Cavies did part of it in 2009, but I would love to see the entire piece (it'd have to be slightly abridged) done. I would actually love to see the Blue Devils take this on.... Aurora Awakes by John Mackey. Cadets, maybe Phantom. Anything by Eric Whitacre (Why hasn't this happened? Does he not allow DCI to do his music?) His choral music would sound incredible if done by Crown... O Magnum Mysterium by Morten Lauridsen, done by any corps, would be the most incredible ballad ever to exist in the history of ever. Forever and ever amen.
  20. Yes, please!!! I second this question! I want to know what's going on!
  21. I actually think that this could make an incredible show. I think the general light-but-poignant aesthetic that Pixar prides itself in could translate very well to the field. I'm also surprised nobody has done Giachinno's music before... Come to think of it, the music from Wall-E could be amazing on the field. Define Dancing, anyone? And I've always felt the drum section from Down to Earth could translate well to the field. And talk about a perfect, un-objectionable use of electronics.... I do think it could look a bit odd to have the characters from Up running around the field though. I think it'd feel like a Disney copy. And the movie is so perfect that I think it might just come off as a cheap imitation if things were too literal on the field. I think there's probably a way to tell the story though, or a story like it, without being too literal. I really see the Bluecoats doing this. I know they've gone towards dark shows in recent years, but the whole feel they had going with their Imagine show seems to play into this Up thing nicely...
  22. Heh, I grew up listening to those recordings. You are totally right, though I still think the band sounds decent today, even if they're not quite what they were a few years ago in the days of Rooney. However, the current brass studio is pretty astounding. Went to a Wind Symphony and Brass Band concert recently, and they sounded better than ever.
