  1. Medford Oregon is a tour stop but it is not judged, just exhibition. And from what i have heard, it doesn't necessarily struggle to sell tickets to the show.
  2. Different judges perhaps. I also want to know how much BK not having their full show influences their content and GE scores
  3. Except at the Santa Clara and Stanford shows where BK had a better content score.
  4. When its all said and done, going into prelims OC will have completed in 19 shows, BD will have competed in 23 shows. SCV will have competed in 27. This is nice since BD is right there in the middle. Yet most would consider them favorites to win the title again. If you split DCI World Class in half, would BD be in the bottom half that doesn't do a full tour, or the top half that does?
  5. I was hoping it would be called the Michigan City Monster Mash.
  6. I don't buy the whole thing, but it does seem like some judges routinely favor certain corps year to year. But to me its more important how a judge rates a show in this specific year. I am very sure that when the judging panels are announced for finals weekend that there are judges certain corps want to see and don't want to see at finals.
  7. The show on the west coast today is having a full panel.
  8. 8 corps, 8 finalist corps from last season, in Muncie, and DCI couldn't have this show be a full panel because????
  9. Its been almost forever since the corps in the west have performed, i was losing my mind.
  10. Personally i find INT's use of kpop to be better than BD's.
  11. My last post about OSU and then still bringing it back to topic. I find that if an alum says "i went to ohio state university" instead of The... That they are just as likely to hear a fellow alum say "The" as they are to hear someone who is annoyed by it say "Don't you mean THEEEE Ohio State University?" A culture has developed where people expect it. And most don't care but for whatever reason we like ticking people off. Which brings me to my last point about this, the greatest gift OSU has given me is the ability to annoy people around the country by simply saying The Ohio State University. Yes it sounds pretentious, and yes i accept it. Back to the topic. While typically for things, groups with a The are alphabetized by the following word, it seems like "The" in some contexts can take on a part of the identity of the group such that its as important as the word that follows. I do not know enough about the history of these corps, i suppose it may depend if The is capitalized mid sentence for these corps. Since the corps technical full name is usually The Cadets Drum and Bugle corps, its not an issue about using the full name. If its about identifying a group of people like how the one said earlier, i am not sure. Is it The Troopers as well? Is it Santa Clara Vanguard but The Vanguard? Or should it more grammatically be The Santa Clara Vanguard? Because it is a specific subset of folks in Santa Clara who are the vanguard? People more familiar with histories should be responsible for this.
  12. Yeah OU was first but miami and cinci were both also pre-1870. I am sure no one in the late 1800s thought the state school in that carriage making city of Columbus would grow to what it is now. But alas, here we are.
  13. As a proud alum of The Ohio State University, i am very okay with referring to any group/team/corps as "The" blah blah, when speaking officially about them. In general terms i'll still call them cavies or cadets or academy. But to the above poster. The Ohio State University was founded in 1870, but had a different name. In 1878 the state legislature renamed the school to The Ohio State University, and was not the first public University in the state of Ohio. Originally though they didn't like the The before the OSU part, so it was just OSU. About 100 years later the school wanted to distance itself from other OSUs (oklahoma st, oregon st) and had a major PR facelift where they decided the block O would be the symbol instead of a rounded O. And they put the The back in place to distinguish itself from the other state universities in ohio. But in the end The Ohio State University is what the school is called. Courtesy of the board of trustees minutes in 1878... "...the educational institution heretofore known as the 'Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College,' shall be known and designated hereafter as 'The Ohio State University.'"
  14. From what i heard on dci live, its definitely the best that i've heard since ive followed dci. 2009 is the only one that comes close, to me. I didnt follow dci in 1999 so i can't compare it to then. I am impatiently waiting to see how this hornline developes come August when i will see them live. The top 5 will be tight in several captions this year, brass being one of them.
  15. With cavies breaking 70 here and BK/phantom right there last night. 6-8 will be as tight as ever (maybe)
  16. Was this show followed by an encore and a 15 minute advertisement for Lake Oconee?
  17. 1. I forgot about that penalty. 2. Checking the score on the app (which is through the dcp scores) they have the crossmen score wrong in the recap. I think in the algorithm they have it to subtract any penalty from the overall score, but the penalty column is already negative so i think they added it to their score.
  18. Interesting theory. Certainly the judges could be trying to keep tighter gaps, but since each individual judge doesnt influence the score too much i find that its hard for me to buy in. Unless some judges go rogue (brass judge last night out west for example). I could be wrong about which corps will be "in the hunt" and which will be safe. It would be one hell of a season if 9 to 14 is competitive in late july. And of course if 1 to 5 is as well. I just think every year we talk about how great these races can be, and in the end the field starts grouping rather quickly.
  19. And 3 tenths of a point in 2009. I do really really want them to make finals. Of course the question becomes who will miss out. Thus is a drum corps fans nightmare.
  20. I would like for this to be the case, i just don't think that it will happen. By atlanta we will probably know who is safely in, and if we are lucky there will be a battle for 12th.if we are really lucky it'll be like a couple years ago with tenths of a point separating 11-13.
  21. Oh the Colts, the corps that I always want to make finals but darnit just can't get over that hump. I hope that they can start shooting up the charts now that (as pit dad said) they will have their closer drill on the field, and as they go throughout the season their narration will become cleaner and more balanced (like last year). will it be enough to push them into the BAC/Troop/Crest battle for 12th this year (yes i know academy haven't performed yet still so they could be in the conversation)
  22. Definitely, although the bird symbol is supposed to represent pigeons. According to the SCV blog... "Surprisingly, Tesla’s didn’t enjoy a life of fame and fortune. Because he lived in a time where the world demanded practical and profitable results, his inventions and ideas didn’t receive the praise and appreciation they deserved. After spending years cooped up in his lab, Tesla began to suffer from hallucinations, making it difficult for him to differentiate between his imagination and reality. In fact Tesla’s claims that one of his closest relationships in life was with a dying white pigeon who he had been caring for outside his New York apartment. This touching story of love and loss, paired with the eerie melodies of “Pure Imagination,” is the inspiration for our third movement." http://blog.scvanguard.org/2015/06/18/who-is-nikola-tesla/
  23. They have several INT performances, semis and prelims are busy for INT. But there is a larger break for dinner around 6ish. Also you may find it "okay" to miss some corps around the break if you want to beat the rush to get food. Or if youre okay with coming back a little late. If you dont want to pay for overpriced lucas oil food, theres a subway, white castle, arbys not too far away to the east of the stadium (i think east) and a tgif not to far to the NW of the stadium in the mariott Plaza.
  24. You are such a tease! I've been to many a show (not as many as some here of course) and have seen each corps perform at least once, most far more. And so far I haven't seen a situation where a corps staff or members acted unprofessionally. Yes they take unused seats (sat next to an SCVC person at Finals who wanted to see the A corps perform for example) but she was nice and we chatted and congratulated her on her medal (i think it was a gold year for them) But i don't want to just throw out guesses. I would think that more experienced corps (corps that draw in the 20+ crowd like Cadets and BD) would know how to act in public. So i really don't know, it's killing me! Though i know why you'll never tell.
