  1. Great to see Racine Scouts back on the scene. We need you and more like you!
  2. Not an issue at all. Simply let your corps know about your dietary needs.
  3. 2012 bluray arrived today. Watched Blue Devils, Crown, and Bluecoats! Awesome sounds! - Blue Devils show in it's entirety - no cuts. Must have cleared the synch rights. Way to go DCI!!! Haven't been able to catch other shows yet. Hopefully some, or all, of the synch right issues have been taken care of. edit for the title of the post - that's 2012 bluray!!! oops!
  4. Imagine if no more discussion threads existed about G7! :rolleyes:/>
  5. University of Akron at EJ Thomas Hall. Great venue and fun show. We've gone the last 2 years and will go again this year. Mr. Jolley (and his great story interludes) and the music department is exceptional. I believe there were over 300 performers on stage last year - from a 5th or 6th grader to an 80-something. It's impossible not to leave without a smile!
  6. Great news! Thanks for sharing! Drum corps can, and will survive - and grow - with examples such as this.
  7. At the risk of sounding like a Gmen honk, after having my kid spend the weekend at their audition camp, I believe that the corps is really getting their act together and assured that they will be on the field in 2013. I won't speak for the organization because I'm in no position to do so. However, as a paying parent, I do have a vested interest. I'm confident that the organization is sound and heading in the right direction. If anyone shied away because they were "scared away by the financial issue", I'd hope that they don't. If you're interested in marching with a wonderful drum corps, the Glassmen could be your destination.
  8. I understand the questions - I have many myself. But, the challenge is when considering the planning document in total. There are a number of things that has not come to fruition as outlined in the document. I do think the opportunity is for DCI to layout the vision and mission of the activity to the public. But, most importantly, action speaks louder than words. And it's the "action" that must come from a united activity.
  9. One possible reason why the field was cut to 7 is because the instant encores were cut from the 2012 shows. Presumably due to the length of time of the 2011 TOC's. This, IMO, was a great feature that was lost for the 2nd year of the TOC's. Having been to a few of the TOC's, we really enjoyed the instant encores. Hopefully, they will be able to add them back in 2013. As for the real reason, we can only speculate. If I was DCI, I'd probably provide an explanation. Hopefully they will sooner than later.
  10. It's too bad that more care wasn't made to protect this document from being made public. How many times have any of us in our own business world have worked with a planning document? Especially a planning document that ended up looking a lot different in its final form - if it even made it to final form! Better care should have been given to ensure its confidentiality. I felt a bit "ooky" about reading it. It would be like reading something private that my kid wrote that wasn't intended for my reading. Remember, this document was to be used a basis for additional discussion - "a working document". I do believe that DCI and the G7 has the best interests of the activity at heart. You can't have management by committee! They recognize what most everyone else does: the activity must adapt, evolve, and promote itself as best as it can. Drum corps cannot operate in a vacuum. It does need to forge a better bond with music education, band kids, schools, teachers, and the countless communities throughout the USA. I do think that the TOC's have merit. I've attended a number of them over the past 2 seasons and really enjoyed them. One reason that they may have shaved the number down to 7 for the "Special Series" is because of the time it took to do the instant encores, and grand finale. As such, the instant encores were eliminated in 2012 - a disappointment in my opinion. Regarding the note about maximizing revenue as a non-profit: that's perfectly acceptable. Just because drum corps is non-profit doesn't mean that you can't make money. In fact, drum corps has every right to make as much money as they can. Money is not a dirty word! It's just that the "profit" stays within the organization for its sustainability and survival - which is exactly what the G7 wants the activity to accomplish. I'm not for burying my head in the sand, but I'm afraid that continued speculation and finger pointing for DCI, G7, etc., from the likes of blogs such as this is counter-productive to the activity itself. DCI must do a better job of managing the message to the public. Until they do, these types of forum topics will continue - and that may not be a good thing at all. Lastly, I will continue to put my money on the kids and the professionals of the activity. Drum corps has evolved and adapted many times throughout the years. It's no different today than it was in 1971 at the dawn of DCI. In the words of Michael Boo (and someone else who said it before him:> UNITED WE STAND! PS - This is old news! It's so two-thousand and ten! PSS - Is there anyone out there that's getting as sick and tired, as I am, of the negative banter on DCP?
  11. It's on! My daughter is excited to be at the Glassmen camp this weekend! Positive stuff coming from camp! 2013 is a GO! So glad we're going to see them back on the field in 2013! It's not too late to offer a little financial support to the corps! DONATE NOW PS - To DCP editors: Why not re-feature this forum on the DCP homepage? With the Gmen kids at camp this weekend, along with the corps' stated commitment to putting them on the field for 2013, let's help remind the DCP community of the great help we can provide by donating what we can. The Gmen have been a wonderful drum corps institution for so many years. Remember, the GMens' call for help is not due to financial needs for standard operating costs as much as it for helping them become whole for past issues. I commend them for being open about their needs. This is a first-class organization that simply can use our help at this time. All of us, in some small way, can help! Thanks!
  12. The parade for non-finalist corps is nothing new. I believe 2013 will be the 3rd year for the parade. My family has enjoyed the parade the last 2 years. I'd recommend it!
  13. Nothing since 2007??? You're kidding, right??? "Vomit"? C'mon!!! I've had about enough negativity one can stand for awhile. Although I won't be providing a complimentary pair of rose-colored glasses anytime soon, but can we slow the backlash on the activity for a bit? DCP is becoming a repository for moaning subject matter. Take a look at the recent rash of topics similar to this one. For goodness sake, the production on the field continues to provide entertainment excellence. And enough about BD's 2012 show! Okay, so some folks didn't like it. There's enough "likes" to go around. It's the dawn of a new year with endless possibilities for performers and corps alike. I'll put my money on the kids and professionals of the activity.
  14. Timeout in this discussion... The schedule has been posted on DCI.org! June can't come soon enough! :rolleyes:/> I'm looking forward to discussions about performances and show designs! All this G7, politics, ego, finance stuff is like reading about sports in the business section. I know it's important, but I'm looking forward to sharing our views on music selection, performances, show designs, and if we'll see a serious challenger(s) to BD's dominance! I bet we do! Okay, now back at it! :rolleyes:/> :rolleyes:/> :rolleyes:/>
  15. 40% is a heck of lot better than 4%! I've heard good things coming from the Gmen. Audition camp is this weekend and my daughter is looking forward to it! Here's hoping for continued support of the corps!
  16. Thank you. That helped! For the good of OUR activity, we need excellent leadership and great people!
  17. Am I missing something here? The source article for this post is a couple of years old. Is there something new going on about this, or just speculation. What are the facts?
  18. I purchased downloads and have been very pleased with them.
  19. Speaking about Doug Thrower, here's a great pod cast with Doug. Great insight into Doug's arranging, insight, and a little humor "Throw'n" in! http://www.marchingr...sody-in-bloooo/
  20. Bluecoats did their own voice-overs in 2012. They weren't "afraid, alone, or scared" to do it!
  21. THIS IS A GREAT TOPIC IN THE SPIRIT OF VETERANS DAY! My family has a couple of G bugles. Both of my drum corps kids will be volunteering to play. They're both looking forward to honoring our vets with a live rendition of taps. Please share the above post with any others that can give some of their time to those who've given so much for us. It's the least that we can do to honor their service to our country. PS - it does't have to be G bugles. Any appropriate trumpet/bugle instrument will do. PSS - to all corps directors who will be hosting thousands of brass players in the next few weeks: this is something that can be mentioned to the kids you'll be meeting. It's a nice way to give something back, while at the same time providing wonderful ambassadors to our activity.
