  1. Gino is quoted as saying that was the loudest Bb baritone line he ever worked with.
  2. The last big-a** hit in Phantom '10 gets me too. The end of Phantom '08, of course. I wasn't there, but the ballad in Cavaliers '02. Crown '09, ending perhaps? Partially from emotion and partially from hearing loss. Also wasn't there, but lots of Phantom '93. There have to be others but I can't remember!
  3. I doubt it. Star had a hornline at close to the talent level of today's (as far as I know and have heard) and doesn't sound even close to as clean as Crown does now on Bbs. That's not to say that I don't like Star's sound- I love it. But it's apples and oranges.
  4. First experience not-live was my band director putting on '05 finals (ESPN) on the TV in the band room. Only corps I remember (or saw? not sure) was Cadets '05. Blew my 15 year old mind. Especially the baritone solo. The only thing I remember thinking was "how do they hold those horns up for so long?" After that, I finally auditioned and made Troopers (long story) and did not see a show until after I had performed in one. 2008 Boston was my first live experience, and it's a special show to me to this day. Oh- and I forgot. Fast forward two years. Who is my new baritone tech but the the same baritone soloist in 2005 Cadets?
  5. The Cadets Holy Bass move at the end of every show- members alternate forwards and backwards, hard to explain.
  6. If you're talking about Bach/Conn Selmer, that's a well known thing. They have been getting better. As for Shires, that sounds like abuse to the horn... I've never heard of anything like that. My old teacher had a Shires from the early '90s that was immaculate. And I wouldn't put vintage horns above new ones... Some of them may be made more solidly, but hardly a majority. My Holton bass (modified by Minick, no less) has popped a few solder joints just while I've owned it.
  7. Whoa. Horns today are not that bad, especially professional ones. Marching brass is a different deal than professional horns (except the Xeno trumpet). Shires splitting down the bell? Some wild accusations here.
  8. There's no money in it for Yamaha or King to make horns that last forever. Cheaper for them to make horns that will last for a few seasons, then need repair or replacement. Plus, then they're cheaper for the corps to buy.
  9. Does it only happen when playing the CDs? I have the rips, I should watch my woofers next time I listen.
  10. Yamaha makes the best hornline set minus the euphonium. That thing is a dog. The other manufactures make some good horns (King euph, Jupiter tuba) but the whole set isn't as good. I do miss the sound of a good King hornline, though.
  11. I hate to get into a Bose argument, but I wouldn't look at Bose. No offense, but that particular theater setup is overpriced by... well, a lot. I haven't listened to any recordings of DCI in surround. I would love to, but I'm a stereo guy! My pair of SPL Monitor 4000s powered by a Sony ES power amp (no preamp) plays my recordings as well as I could imagine. And as loud. Personally, bass isn't a super important part of many drum corps recordings. Nothing is really digging down to the sub-bass frequencies (below say, 40hz) other than some bass drum stuff at times, and maybe modern synthesizer. Many speakers or earphones will reproduce too much bass, which isn't how it sounds. In a surround sound setup, though, I would have it turned on but matched to the other speakers- it probably has it's own volume control on the back.
  12. No haha. That was to the BD/Cadets thing going on the first page. Also, I don't think they crab into it. I haven't watched '07 very much though, just listened.
  13. '07 has one too. As for the above corps rivalries spinning into motion, give it a rest. Just name a signature move and be on your way.
  14. Totally agreed. I've played on the Dynasty low brass. They definitely made some noise, but the sound was not great and they just felt "clunky" all around. The Jupiter euph is MILES ahead of them. And yes, you can hear a huge difference from the BD Dynasty lines to the lines of the last couple years. Balance, general sound, quality are all ten times better now.
  15. True. However, Blue Devils have a very obvious set of stripes on one leg. In white.
  16. Not necessarily. I had a friend that marched Cavaliers for a couple years. He had several friends blow their knees out every spring training. I did injure myself marching straight leg, but it was because I wore the wrong shoes one season. I vastly prefer straight leg on the field from an audience standpoint.
  17. You're a troll, correct? It was funny the first time, but the correct name of the corps is Pioneer. I'm sure someone else can answer your question.
  18. I like Crown, and I like a couple of their shows ('08, then '09, then '12 a distant 3rd). Of course, I don't like them so much for the "concept" or whatever, I just love the sound they make. So I can see where you are coming from.
  19. I wear glasses for driving and for seeing chalkboards and such. Never used them on the field. Of course, many people have worse vision than I and had to deal with contacts or glasses. Not sure what I would do today, with slightly worse vision than when I marched.
  20. Went to a little bit of camp this past weekend. Proud of what they are going to accomplish this year.
