Is Crown the first drum corps Rick Subel has fulfilled the roll of Artistic Director/Production Director? I am familiar with his success as head of Paramount Winterguard and various roles with other corps over the years, but was wondering if Crown was the first drum corps where he was taking the lead with the design?

FJM has also given us a better look at the props CC is using this year as well.

If you look at the photo album crown just uploaded on FB of ST, you can see that there appears to be individual carts or something on the field at some point in the show.

I haven't looked through the thread, but has anyone/where confirmed between the cadet style uni, last years, or something totally new this summer?

I always enjoy Dan Potter's Field Pass throughout the summer. Not a FloMarching subscriber, but they often do roundtables recapping that week's scores/placements, previewing shows, and deep dives into corps productions, etc. However, a lot of those are not free and require a subscription.

Because it's almost June and we don't have any show info, I'm dissecting the small clips of ST haha. They posted a video of their guard doing some nice doubles work with rifles, behind them you can clearly make out a ramp and what appears to be a FE arrangement that is not flush with the front sideline... Interesting.

No idea what the program is about, but the show graphic reminds me of Crown 2016.

Fort Mill Marching Band used it as their ballad back in 2017. A search on the web will lead you to their Semis performance at BOA GN, featuring a violinist.

Search around for an old mello (like 15-20 years old) online somewhere like ebay that is a King or Dynasty that has all moveable parts. Yamaha is where is gets really nice and also expensive, so keep it to a minimum and don't buy anything like what the corps sell at the end of the season. You might also have luck checking around to music shops that the local band directors work with about renting one for a few months too. With all the audition info out floating around on the web, sometimes corps put on their websites the mouthpieces that they prefer or what the line uses during the summer so search around there and find some current reviews that seem reputable. You honestly could get away with not hiring a private instructor. Once you get an instrument and decide on a mouthpiecee, see if any of your trumpet friends that plays well can help you set your embouchure and some basics like all the different types of articulations. Get an ear for the mellophone and work on your range. Can't emphasize enough how starting off with good basics will help you in the long run. Also start from the beginning playing and practicing standing up with the horn held in a good position like you were marching. Good Luck!

Anyone have any updates, rumblings, or know of when any new staff will be announced- other than Ron Hardin stepping down as Visual Caption Head?

Per his FB page, Joe Hobbs resigns as The Cavalier's Percussion Caption Manager. "As of today, I have officially resigned as the Percussion Caption Manager at The Cavaliers. This is an incredibly difficult decision to make, but I feel this is the right decision for me and my family. I have been struggling with finding balance with my family, Vandegrift, and the stresses that come with running the percussion program at The Cavaliers. This is an organization that will always hold a special place in my heart and it’s been one of the joys of my life to have led this caption the past 4 years. I’m proud to say that over the past 4 years, the retention rate has been the achievement I’ve been most proud of. Only 1 eligible member has not returned over the past 4 years. I’m proud to say that we were able to create an environment within the Cavaliers Percussion section that attracted incredible young men, as well as kept members coming back year after year. Scores are scores, but this to me was my crowning achievement." His post continues to mention that he will be spending more time with his family.

I occasionally have a dream where I am filling a late season hole on baritone or euph and my only job is to march the drill, which I completely blank and bounce around like a pinball and eventually get ran over, afterwards getting screamed at by the visual caption head from the box.

This is a personal interpretation of the white horn props and potential story line, so take it for what its worth. When I first saw them they reminded me of the bones from rib cages from huge animals coming up from the ground, think of Scar's land in The Lion King. Notice in the opener they are coming out of them and at the first hit in Bruckner, the drill set has lines coming from each of the sets of bones and the teeter totter. Then throughout the rest of the opener there are several reiterations of the 4 or 3 grouped lines. I kind of take it as different "populations" of beasts from their respective "lands" coming together and fighting, ultimately forming a unified group of beasts? The females in the ballad showing that they can love and multiply, with the teeter totter representing a struggle to the top. Would be cool if this is what they are going for and had different colors for each group on the front apron part of the uniform. Just a shot in the dark

Yes, specifically I was talking about up until around 2010. Watch Crown 2007 and note how well the flag designs compliment the story, music, and whimsy of the program. It isn't bashing you over the head with something like printed pictures of horses. For example during the "Dreamer" part of the show, there is a really nice fabric flag of a sunrise representing the morning of the race that really stands out in my head. The printed designs have its merits, like when you need a lightning bolt or very intricate design, but if its a dark color to begin with and features a detailed design like a lot of Crown's 2015 and 2018 flags, then it all kind of gets washed out.

Just my personal opinion, but this is why I really don't like printed flags that almost everyone is using now. The printed designs are really hard to make out the details unless you are sitting in the first 10 rows, it all comes out drab from up top. I know that they are more expensive to make, but I miss the days of the sewn fabric flags with the pops of color and great designs.

Had surgery on Friday so I was bummed I couldn't see drum corps in my own backyard Saturday. Crown's show hasn't changed much beyond adding the closer. They have a nice break coming up between July 10th and 14th. Really hoping for some additions and layering in order to widen the gap between Boston and catch up to Coats.

Ready to see this closer! Whole reason why I tuned in to tonight's stream!
