  1. Another great drum corps icon has been taken away from us, may he rest in peace
  2. The first harness of any type ever on the field of competition was developed by Jim Costello of the Caballeros. It was made for the timbales that were carried by Bobby Hoffman (yes that Bobby Hoffman)in the early 60's
  3. As a result of complications from the early winter storm, rehearsal was cancelled. It has been rescheduled for next Sunday November 6, 2011, same place, same time.
  4. The Next Brassmen alumni rehearsal will be held on Sunday, October 30th, 2011 Time: 12:00 p.m. to 5: 00 p.m. At our new permanent home American Legion Post 10-20 Clintonville Street Whitestone, NY 11357 Come check us out, some very cool things happening for 2012
  5. I know there has been a few 3 generation families in the Caballeros organization, not sure about 4 though
  6. I saw something today which made me think of this and how many times this may have happened. I was very fortunate to march with my son in 2 championships years (1992,1993 Bushwackers). Being on the field with your kid is a great experience no matter where you place but how many of you out there have had the unique experience of sharing a championship title with them.
  7. Looking west coast gansta, kinda like Clyde and his moll
  8. The Brassmen Alumni will be rehearsing this Sunday Oct 9, 2011 Time: 12 to 5 Location: American Legion Post 10-20 Clintonville St. Whitestone, NY 11357 Brass, percussion and guard are all welcome, come check out what's new for 2012 from the little engine that does.
  9. What type of heads are you using as a "dry", very articulate sound is pretty much what's in vogue now. Maybe he's hearing extraneous overtones that are affecting the clarity of your batterie percussion
  10. I could've but at that time (1973),it was inevitable that I was going to go to the Skyliners. Subsequently, I did march with the Bushwackers,Cabs and the Brigs so, I guess this thread really didn't apply to me, lol
  11. You are 100% correct, it is what you're comfortable with that matters to you. Imo though the rest of it is kind of a moot point seeing as I think the angle thing has been somewhat discounted as a determining factor on how you approach the drum and if drums still had leg rests and slings, there wouldn't be much drill happening away from up, down and around the 50 (I know,I did it carrying a 15 in drum with a sling and leg rest for 20 years before harnesses and 14" drums came out). As far as playing goes, sound quality and speed are in how you were taught and what you're exposed to. To my knowledge, most sticks are the traditional 17 1\4 " and have been for a long time now. I think good players are good players, no matter what era they come from and would be able to adapt to whatever they chose to do The last year I marched in DCA was 2000, my official "age out" year so I've been through the loop with the fast drills, tempos, etc, I also went back to playing with a sling and leg rest for a couple of years with Sky Alumni (2007-2009), On another note while show fields have gotten better from bitd, ask some of these young people about the fields they practice on, lol
  12. Just a follow-up. The Open house went well with some new faces in attendance. The corps will be performing at the 2011 Brass Reunion presented by Archer-Epler Musketeers on Saturday October 1. Our next rehearsal at which we will be jumping full force into next years program will be on Sunday Oct 9, 2011. All info regarding times and location can be found on our website www.brassmen.net
  13. I was used to playing on tables and pads as well which if you really think about it since the table wasn't usually at the height that you would wear the drum, really had no specific effect either way. I also used to feel that way about stands too but the fact is there is quite a bit more time marching with drums on than was done back in the day with a lot more varied movement and moving around a hell of a lot faster as well so, the time spent playing on stands is minimal actually.
  14. You know that isn't by design, it's just the way things have become for quite a few groups. There was a time not too long ago where Reading went through some of the same issues.
  15. Pepe was a great horn player, motivator and one of the funniest people you could ever meet, a true showman in every sense of the word
  16. Anybody remember 2000 with the fireworks display that went on so long that everyone was deaf, blind and coughing when it ended about 20 minutes later, then they started announcing the long list of awards
  17. I do remember learning the Stars and Stripes chart, don't remember playing it much
  18. Haha, I will say this though, it's amazing to see some of the same people 40-50 years later out there with the same flair that they exhibited bitd. Scout House never fails to totally entertain the audience
