  1. If I'm not mistaken, it was 2015. Jubal, Chien Kuo, and 1 other group I forget the name of.
  2. I could be wrong, but didn't SCV win only GE in 1999 and still (tie for the) win? That would make three times in DCI history, including the Bluecoats this year.
  3. Funny you should mention that one with the Olympics just ending. "Survival" was the official song of the London 2012 Olympic Games, but was heavily criticized for its apparently simplistic message about "winning" in the lyrics. But because we're talking about drum corps, which concerns the depth of the actual music more than the lyrics, this would be an incredibly cool song for a corps to take on.
  4. You know what show the 2016 Bluecoats reminded me of? Blue Devils 2012. Both revolutionary shows presented in very different ways.
  5. Original music by Key Poulan, plus "Arabesque No. 1" by Claude Debussy. The entire show is for sale on Key's website.
  6. Well, as long as Crown still has an amazing hornline, I think they'll be okay. I heard a brief rumor that Tom Aungst might return to the Cadets, but I feel like it's just a rumor.
  7. Just heard that Crown lost a good chunk of their design staff to BAC. Wow. My prayers are with them right now.
  8. And their 2007 show was considered their "50th anniversary show," so...
  9. [ youtube ] (insert link here) [/ youtube ] (Ignore the spaces. That was just so that the text wouldn't be recognized as a video.)
  10. It's okay, Cappybara. One of the tough things with me is that I'm going to a college where their school of music is fantastic, but they don't have a marching band, only a pep band, so I doubt they have any mellophones. Also, I really don't want the whole audition process (especially for someone like me who's a French horn performance major who wants to be in a World Class corps) to take over my college career.
  11. Crown or Troopers: A show based Satoshi Yagisawa's "The West Symphony." Opener: Production Number: Ballad & Closer:
  12. This isn't totally related to the topic, but is Bocook still going to be with BK? I've really enjoyed his arranging there.
  13. I know there's a big fallout over a lot of Cadets staff, and having heard the news about McNutt, I have a question. Has anyone heard anything about Cadets pit arranger & coordinator(?) Iain Moyer? He's written some great stuff for that pit in the past and I'm curious as to whether he's still going to be with them.
  14. In general, PR should take more programming risks in the future, not just thematically but also musically. It paid off for the Cavaliers this year when they changed program coordinators and made a show that could have been totally divisive a huge crowd favorite. Less European Romantic-era music, more American, modern and even non-Western music. I saw a little bit of that risk-taking this year, but if they want to have competitive success in the future, they have to go all in. Here's an example of a piece that doesn't quite sound like something PR would play at first, but it fits the bill for their future, IMO.
  15. What about the Auburn Purple Lancers, the only DCI corps from New York to ever make Finals?
  16. My high school marching band did a show based on his movie "The Birds" a few years back.
  17. All this talk about Maslanka and we have yet to mention "Morning Star" and "Give Us This Day!"
  18. Next Thursday when the sun goes down, I will play Einstein on the Beach backwards. Oh what a lovely night that would be.
  19. So for those who like my "Everest" idea, I'll go ahead and admit that I was somewhat inspired by SCV's show this year. In a way, it reminded me of why I love the Cadets' 1992-2001 shows so much: timeless, creative, elegant, understandable, and classy. Those are elements that I haven't found in too many Cadets shows lately. I like this year's show better than some other recent ones, but one of the big reasons why I knew it couldn't do as well as SCV and Cavies was because of how it was constructed. The Cadets seemed to split their show into two "halves," and because of the separation, it felt awkward and jarring watching a show that was majestic and beautiful in the first half and then suddenly dark and foreboding in the second. Also, "The Frozen Cathedral" is a piece I've always wanted to hear the Cadets play as their closer since I first heard it online a couple years ago. All the mountain-esque repertoire kind of came out of the idea that the piece was written after a mountain (Denali in Alaska, to be exact).
  20. Or they could call it "The Zone: Dreamscape in Four Parts with a Glassdoor." Or "Volume 2: Through the Looking Glassdoor."
  21. You should have also considered "Do You Love Me John?" (Wait, wrong corps! )
  22. Just do what I've been requesting for a few years now and bring us an all-Latin show next year. I know Gold (from Open Class) did a Dia de los Muertos show this year, but I bet Madison could take that concept and run with it!
