  1. Listening to the SCV Birthday Dinner performance now. Looks like their show features "The Canyon" by Philip Glass, plus several other tunes I don't immediately recognize.
  2. The birthday dinner is live in case anyone's interested. http://youtu.be/8Kd4gsM6Uag
  3. My predictions as of today: 1/2. Bluecoats or Blue Devils 3/4. The Cadets or Carolina Crown 5. Blue Knights 6/7. SCV or Phantom Regiment 8. The Cavaliers 9. Madison Scouts 10. Boston Crusaders 11. Troopers 12. Colts (OK, those last 2 choices were admittedly wishful thinking. I just want to see a couple of new faces in Finals this year.) At this point in time, I think the only corps that has a legitimate shot at beating the Blue Devils is the Bluecoats. Maybe Cadets, but only if the new visual team can play their cards right. I love Crown, but their percussion isn't the best and has been a major anchor on the corps as of late. SCV and the Blue Knights just need better overall packages in order to be considered medal-worthy. (DISCLAIMER: I am not affiliated with any of these corps, and I have only seen a few videos of a couple of the corps. So these predictions are based either last year's results or pure speculation.)
  4. Anybody here know what the cut from Boston's show was for?
  5. I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned that the Finale Montage video that plays during Finals retreat has pretty much replaced the "mass brass" finale of years past. It gives every corps that comes to Indy a moment in the spotlight, and to me, it shows that DCI is no longer all about the "Top 12." And I agree with others on here that while I loved the idea of all of the competing corps playing together and melting fans' faces off, it looked much better on paper than in reality (trumpets screaming, wrong notes, members just holding the tonic, etc.).
  6. Didn't the Blue Devils win Prelims but then lose Semis and Finals in 2013?
  7. Just saw an Instagram post of the same video. They used the word "Sledgehammer" in the caption. Could that possibly be their show title? https://instagram.com/p/BCDyZL3DD7F/
  8. In terms of the musical selections, my #1 concern is how they'll establish a transition between the joyous and light-hearted "Pines of the Villa Borghese" and the dark and foreboding "Turning." The show almost feels like it's divided into two distinct halves, a "happy" one and an "angry" one.
  9. I'd love to see the Crossmen do "Mitä Kaikatat, Kivonen" by Rajaton. I know they played "Butterfly" just last season, but the other piece feels a bit more "Crossmen-like" to me. It's a somewhat simple piece in terms of layering, but if arranged creatively, it can work. (P.S. There are two versions of this piece. The original one was released in 2000, and a bit more up-tempo arrangement was done in 2006.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6fCHZDPcHw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyqkW9FKCJI
  10. I agree with you on this, George. I think it's been this way ever since Michael Gaines left, although there have been shows that foreshadowed this transition from drill to staging and choreography before he left (see Blue Devils 2009). The last championship show I remember that had fantastic drill design was Cadets 2011.
  11. Does anyone else notice that SCV got a slightly updated logo that looks kind of cartoonish?
  12. Colts 2016: "Nachtmusik" https://twitter.com/drumcorpsquotes/status/697264953649188864
  13. All talk about Fiedler aside, congratulations Charles Frost! Best of luck to you in your first year as Corps Director, as well as to the members of SCV. Here's hoping we see another show like last year's, which IMO was a great breath of fresh air for the corps.
  14. Will the Bluecoats' show be straight fire this year? Will they burn the competition for their first title? Are they going to bring DCI to a boil? These are some hot questions to ponder!
  15. It's official: http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/news/1169-new-music-by-mackey-for-the-cadets
  16. Glad they got rid of that horrendous title. Unfortunate about the concept, though. At the very least, the music is still there.
  17. Let's be real here: The whole "slotting" phenomenon was started by people who hate seeing the same corps win the championship most years since 2007.
  18. For those who are interested, they're live on Periscope right now!
  19. It appears that the only proposals that passed were the half-tenths for subcaptions, the electronics modifications, and the percussion scoresheet modifications. Also, it's no longer Percussion 1 and 2. Now it's Field Percussion and Ensemble Percussion, with Ensemble appearing at all competitions and Field only at the regionals and championships. http://m.dci.org/mobile/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=33500&ATCLID=210675332
  20. I would throw 2010 in the collection of "dark years" too.
  21. My guess is that it's lungeing one leg in a particular direction with the upper body turned in that direction.
