  1. After the Bluecoats performance in Clifton n.j. last evening, I think that it is reasonable to accept that the Cadets have a huge uphill climb to reach that level of showmanship..mind you, this from a Cadet fan for over 36 years.
  2. talk about a heat wave...2.2 improvement from previous show..I don't recall that happening last year..as a matter of fact sometimes scores went down...watch out DCI, the Cadets are serious!!
  3. With Blue Devils losing yesterday anything is possible..So, from what I saw last evening the Cadets are going to be competitive and dangerous come August !...great first show .. keep up the good work..Cadets rock!!!
  4. had forgotten how great those last 90 seconds were...KILLER marching !!
  5. to get through the wet weekend I put on the video of the 93 cadets at finals....####, does drum corps get much better?..innovations aside, the purity of that performance still stands out after 25 years..if they can evoke that emotion again, I won't care what they score
  6. looking forward to seeing CADETS overcome adversity and become serious contenders by finals,,,would also love to see MANDARINS move into the top 12
  7. as long as the arrangements provide new perspectives not previously heard I don't mind...with the emphasis on visual design music is often chopped up such that it loses identifiability ,,,so two or more corps playing the same piece of music might go unnoticed by the non drum corps savvy
  8. just returned home from serious surgery...Feels like I walked into a bad dream...will always support the mm"s in spite of GH..stay strong ..peace!
  9. there's enough negative energy in the world that ideally drum corps replaces...here's hoping for a retooled , kick ###, 1982 like year , where the next chapter of the Cadets legacy again elevates the activity..peace
  10. my favorite year was 1966 because it was the first and only time that my corps(St. Roccos Cadets) managed to beat Garfield(twice)..That's probably why I'm a Cadets fan to this day!!!
  11. BD 1986...the bernard herrman , taxi driver year(2000?)..1976...metamorph and the burt bacharach program..I think 2011?
  12. 1992 and any 90's shows featuring pat metheny music
  13. If anything, drum corps has provided an alternative to the current madness afloat...If shows are crafted with insight and integrity and performed well, as in any art form, meanness (which suggests intentional) has no relevance..only the perspective of the viewer whose pre-judged values might be in conflict would contribute to this "meanness" (imo)..I would not equate seriousness with meanness..a seriously concerned democracy is a good thing..it suggests that people care, just like we do when it comes to drum corps
  14. thank you for your observation..It's encouraging to read that jazz is being promoted at these levels..As I said in another post, regarding improvisation , the chops are there in DCI to play this music..perhaps visual priorities make it more difficult to explore (Non big band) jazz.
  15. Miles davis said " If you want to play jazz, you have to know how to play the blues"Rare to find young folks who play the blues and arrangers who attempt, as someone said, to write arrangements that require a certain "feel" that the more classically trained students just don't have.imo
  16. My favorite Crossmen shows were Pat Metheny oriented..Now is that jazz?I think you find in most jazz collections some Pat Metheny and Quincy Jones(BD)
  17. thanks for your always insightful observations..point well made!
  18. with the exception of BD and Bluecoats, it feels as though jazz is disappearing
  19. on this topic I must defer to my senior DCPers and those more intimately involved with the Cadets from a historic perspective...did I read that the focus of Mr. H was moving more toward C2 and US Bands and less of a focus on building a championship Cadets corps..and if so , why?
  20. for n.y. you must include St. Rocco's, perennial yankee circuit champs and St. Joe's Batavia
  21. sounds like a man readying his successor for the inevitable pressures of running a successful drum corps..the good with the bad!!
