  1. This is true. San Antonio sits in a spot that allows them to lose humidity in the afternoon hours due to some other really cool processes. You’ll notice often times it is rather muggy in the early morning hours there and then it burns off a bit during the day. Parts of eastern Texas and especially along the coastal plains don’t get that luxury. For the Dallas area, you have the urban heat island for one (which essentially works to the opposite effect with daytime high temperatures meaning your temperature will nearly always be lower than the high temperatures just 15-20, miles outside the city), and two you have the city in a typically much drier area in the southern plains. You go any further west and it dries out really fast. This is because a larger portion of the atmosphere in your area has air coming from the Mexican mountains and southern Rockies. At the surface level you still have the gulf fetch (which is why some days can still be very humid, especially during storm season) but it mixed out with the hot, dry air aloft coming from the southwest and that helps allow temps to skyrocket and humidity on average during the summer to be a tad bit lower than that of eastern/southern Texas.
  2. HA! Good luck with the completely saturated air and much harsher weather conditions. You’d be much better off sitting on the frying pan bleachers and watching drum corps all day back on earth haha. There’s a reason why they’d have to build domes for people on mars.
  3. There are a few areas in the country where you could practically stay hydrated just from breathing the waterlogged air and not be near the coast in the slightest. People from back in Texas where I used to live always get so confused when I tell them there are times when eastern Nebraska is more humid than San Antonio 😂. Evapotranspiration FTW! Lol.
  4. Thank you all by the way. I still have soooo much to learn but weather is my first and foremost passion, though funny enough band put up a real good fight for major choice going into college. Music Ed sounded really good to my ears senior year 😂
  5. San Antonio (where I used to live) has an all time record temperature of 111 degrees, but has frequently reached 104, 107, etc going back at least 70 years (just pulled up data for it). I lived there when they had the second highest temperature all time (110°F) on August 28, 2011, but overall though the summer was hot it never really felt out of the ordinary. The 111°F day happened 22 years ago by the way, for reference.
  6. Resident Meteorology Student and Storm Chaser here...happy to see some weather enthusiasts on this platform. Definitely makes me feel more at home, met someone who works for the NWS through another band forum which was really cool. Anyways, this does happen to be the hottest day in Oklahoma State History as a whole. For the first time in history, all 120 Oklahoma MesoNet ASOS and AWOS stations measured temperatures greater than 101°F at the same time - and this was at 2:35 pm, hours before the diurnal heating cycle reaches it's peak in Oklahoma (link below). Now, this doesn't mean that these kinds of temperatures are rare for the Southern and Central Plains. They happen almost yearly, and have for decades, and extremes will come sprinkled in throughout that time naturally. This is a hot summer for the plains, but that is mostly because of the long term position of the polar jet pattern with a ridge emplaced over the plains and eastern side of the rockies and jet extensions favoring the east coast, which will persist into the winter. There is a whole bunch of climatological jargon I could throw into this to help explain why, but I would probably be here for hours typing up an entire thesis and dissertation given the passion I have for weather haha. Point is, temperatures like this are more common than the media likes to make it out to be. Just four (might be five) years ago I remember the Belton show being changed to rehearsal attire only for the performances because of the weather - a cool 113°F. Those temperatures happen every year in nearly all parts of Texas, people just have a short memory and forget about it when they find themselves sweating bullets in the hot summer day when they have to mow the lawn for the first time in three weeks because it rained for the first time in a month and a half last week. I know this because I used to live there and saw that exact encounter first hand 😆. And for those that think moving the show further north would be of much help, I'd like to remind you that South-Central Canada reaches triple digits frequently during the summer now as well. Parts of Nebraska west of Lincoln regularly reach 110°F+ almost yearly too. The anomaly was when western Canada roasted in ~120°F weather for like two weeks last year. Most of British Columbia is filled with mountains and the western side of the mountain range typically receive a lot of rain during the late spring into summer months depending on once again the average placement of the polar jet for that particular year and pattern. The Seattle Cascades and the Oregon Crusaders had one hell of a summer to contend with if there were a full season that year. https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fokmesonet%2Fstatus%2F1549487126336524288%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR3NWrD2BgjXbaptgCyoQaY53OKHycSTUm9HgW_a05T_9lXVUrjn74Shwpw&h=AT0Xo8U0ORbbFfeGxsuBJqBMBYlOFD0JX9-_4I3rEASQ6jRh7DARNaNBxkE9iIrdhWJqH9is8WjtoLMfPYcmaCas0rwcEqEMEu3qynKyddPU5A0aO3Z_VYdsI7dhKptYQx_GxQ_jTOsyb9e7m71vxQ
  7. We had just gotten a brand new sound system that year with shotgun mics lined up 35/35 and multiple soloists across the field so electronics were not an option haha. Not enough canopies for that 😆. And same here in regards to the subpar conditions, it almost was a driver for us. Our most electric performances for lack of a better word were always in poor weather. It always got everyone's adrenaline pumping.
  8. I remember back in HS marching our show in the middle of a Tropical Storm with our ponchos on and without electronics naturally. Easily my most memorable night in band, we had an ELECTRIC show. The football game itself was incredible too, adding even more fun into the night.
  9. Haha thank you for recognizing me. I have been here on this forum for a while as well, and just as with the others I stepped away for the most part for some time for some personal reasons, however I plan to come back strong and stick to it for as long as I can. There will be times when my adult life keeps me away as with any other here. Though I will say here I sometimes feel like an ant. I know nil to nothing about music and the marching arts compared to many here. A lot of legends spend their time here, and a lot of great people too! P.S. Crown has the best fanbase hands down, like the Nebraska fans of DCI, though Crown hasn't been around 150 years haha.
  10. I was trying to point out that there is a Brass instructor teaching at a corps this summer that may be leaving the other program they also teach at year round somewhat soon and will potentially have more time to work with that corps if he doesn't leave the activity entirely (which I don't anticipate). He usually misses finals week and sometimes time beforehand because he has to return to the other program, plus he'd be able to be more invested in what he is already doing there emotionally and physically which is always a good thing. And also trying to make the point that once he does start working with that corps a lot more full time if you will, the corps' brass is only going to skyrocket more than they already are and will soon be competing for Ott trophies yearly. I was simply making a prediction on how I think this can and would affect the corps he works at, even through a long, backroad way. Probably could have been more direct to the point.
  11. I have an odd feeling that there is a Brass instructor who is going to probably have a lot more time on his hands to work with a certain corps during the summer relatively soon (unless he decides to leave the industry in the entirety which could happen) and if he does I see him starting to become a big time mainstay for the program and soon they'll be competing for Ott's right alongside Harloff and Crown year to year. I think he is cementing himself as one of THE best brass instructors in the country, bar only Harloff. But it depends on if he is losing his love for the activity itself, or his love for teaching where he is during the year. From what I have seen on recent posts with social media and what I know about him personally, I think it is only the latter. I am being intentionally vague because I don't know for a fact if this guy is leaving his program right now, but it is pretty obvious he is very close to it. One of the premier programs in the country, and unfortunately I think they are about to lose their shining star. Has nothing to do with the students or anything he did, thankfully. This will likely have no implications on 2022 unless he makes a big decision sometime this summer, but I thought I would point this out.
  12. Very intrigued to see how this week of cleaning works out for Crown. Can't wait to see how CrownBEAT goes, especially since they will be competing against Boston for the first time this season.
  13. I got to watch the tour premier in theaters this year, and I would love do say THANK GOD SHAW IS BACK. Phantom really feels like they are back and have energy again, and it fills my heart with joy. Awesome show and am excited for how it does at the end of the season.
  14. Well they do have their OG music designer back finally, part of the reason why last season seemed to finally be a step forward again for them. I hope he is staying with them for more years to come because it will probably mean we will see at least a little bit of the revival of of the phantom that has well...become a phantom in the last few seasons. Excited to see them come out strong this year!
  15. I can't wait to throw babies from Nebraska then. 🤣
  16. Might want to double check those dates lol. Saturday does not come before friday and is not two days apart
  17. Yeah those mellos are really strong this year indeed. I really wanted to hear them soar on this piece.
  18. Thank you for the status report, yeah from what I have seen I completely agree on the brass not playing around. I can't wait to hear chandelier on the field, I know it sounds amazing on the field when the right ensemble does the right arrangement of it, and from what I have seen they have an awesome arrangement of it. Can't wait to hear and see more as the summer goes on.
  19. I am excited to hear your status report! Have a great time! Also to Jeff, sheesh that will be fun.
  20. HAHA now you make me want to hear how they took it lmao.
  21. Alright I am not sure about the rest of the rep but I have really been wanting a corps to put equus to the field. One of my favorite pieces that I've had the pleasure to play.
  22. Bumping this from page 9 as the season is finally underway. Can't wait to see how this season goes for Phantom Regiment!
  23. I am coming through to give this a bump from page 9 (!). I can't wait for summer to come already! By the way who here decided to forget about Bloo lol?
  24. Honestly, I think that this idea is completely the right choice for them. We all know that performers are going to pour even more emotion into their performances over the next two to three years, but especially this one. This has the potential to make a lot of people cry if they do it right.
  25. I think that I can speak for us all when I say that I hope that things can work out before the summer - because we all want to see a season occur, but we also all know the milestones that will have to be reached before that can realistically happen. There is so much planning and financial resources that have to be put into this before anything could even dream of getting off of the ground. It is possible though. If there is a will there is a way.
