  1. This forum has been quite an interesting challenge in the last little while. We are tired, and we are fed-up beyond normal with what has been going on. At this time we all want life to be different. Your post was beautiful. Heartfelt, appreciative and relates to so much that we like about this activity. We sometimes forget the human aspect when discussing topics here. Thank you for posting!
  2. To have a profession that you love and don't want to leave can keep us alive and happy. While I understand the the desire to retire, I also understand that sometimes there are are people who need to continue. I hope your move isn't affected by work commitments.
  3. I saw an article recently about mustard with watermelon. Do people actually try this?
  4. Will we ever get cooking advice on DCP? Are there any amazing recipes for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or mac and cheese? Tuna fish sandwiches? Potato salad?
  5. From your history JimF, I know you aren't one to post your opinion without prior experience - something that I respect. You have much more than I can imagine. Your point of view is appreciated. In the grand scheme of things, I think this is peanuts. If DCI fails, then some of the what motivates the youth of today dies and has to be rebuilt. So many would not care, but we care. We want this to survive. To survive means having an organization to help it survive. DCI is what we have to do that right now.
  6. I do not agree. I have seen much worse situations with what has happened in the past with handouts. The news is full of situations where handouts in the US were outrageous and subsequently ill spent. I am glad DCI got this. This is a pittance in comparison to many others where it seems out of control. I don't want DCI to die. I hope this keeps them alive.
  7. Is that a positive reference or do you think it's a bad thing?
  8. Yes to Penguin. No to Bigfoot. Maybe to Chupacabra.
  9. My first live corps experience was 1980. I was blown away by what I saw. The '80s is one of my favorite decades in DCI because it was the beginning of an activity that I still watch to this day. Someone just posted all the corps that appeared at DCI East, Allentown that year on YouTube - the show that 27th won over Devils. So many different perspectives not shown on the finals broadcast that year.
  10. There is something to appreciate in every decade. We have also gone through periods where I didn't like a trend, only for it to go away. In the '80s many guards stop using rifles and I really missed a nice unison rifle line. Then they become popular again. Yet at the same time, visuals took off and some of the drill that was presented was absolutely amazing. At the moment I have a challenge with the concept of staging. I like big pictures on the field, not small pods doing their own thing.
  11. While at the client in Fort Myers a colleague of mine decided to take off her shoes and walk barefoot from one building to another through the grass. The fire ants feasted on her during that short walk.
  12. I suspect he will be the next recipient of a Darwin award. Bare feet with alligators?
  13. I had a client in Fort Myers that had a large, head-office complex. In front was a large lagoon with a driveway that circled around it leading to the main entrance and parking lot. The lagoon had a resident alligator which would periodically decide to sun itself on the driveway. When that happened, cars would back up and everyone would just wait for the alligator to move. It was actually quite funny when this happened.
  14. As a habitual apartment dweller, I have a lot of experience with roaches. I have found one product which was extremely effective, at least indoors. They don't fly yet in Montreal.......yet is operative. It is called Maxforce Pro gel bait. While I was waiting for a prior landlord to respond one time, I bought the product on Amazon. My problem went away before the exterminator arrived. Roaches eat the gel, go back to their roach friends, they die and then their roach friends eat them continuing the cycle of roach death. Guess the product the exterminator had when he came to treat my kitchen? Unfortunately the Canadian Government has decided that we lowly citizens can't import it anymore, but exterminators can. It is readily available in the US and comes with a lot of other optional roach control products including stick-able bait stations and a stick-able device that renders them unable to breed. You might try it. My experience with Palmetto bugs was in Tampa. I came out to my rental car one morning and one somehow was upside down on my windshield with it's wings stuck to the glass - it was crying "Help me! Help me!." After my day with the client I saw it was no longer stuck to the windshield... How do I make you feel better about Palmetto bugs? Thank God they aren't bed bugs. That is an entire different kettle of fish. How does this relate to Drum Corps? I've always wondered if a Drum Corps has ever had to deal with bed bugs - particularly on a bus. That would be a summer to remember.....(or forget).
  15. Every time I think of batons I remember this.. https://youtu.be/jpiD2FJ0LPw
  16. I listened to the Mozart as well as the recording you posted. I don't see a similarity. I see on dcxmuseum.org there a reference to the title of the piece with the composer being Colin Mawby. Here is an example of a recording of the Mawby version. It is what Phantom played.
  17. Thank you. I remember some of the criticism of that show....that it was ballad intensive. Listen to the first ballad starting at the 2:45 mark. To me it is equally gorgeous. Just so nice. I'm sorry I cannot find a better or later season video but you will hear what I am referring to.
  18. I had a client for two years in Fort Myers. I even had the chance to experience Tropical Storm Henry during one such visit. Wonderful people. But the regularly schedule thunderstorms in the late afternoon were quite a havoc for flight scheduling. I have never experienced lightning like that anywhere else. Flying in from Atlanta with lighting all around the plane thinking "OMG - I'm here to die!"
  19. Thank you. I admit the show concept was not that clear and I could not decipher what they wanted to convey. There were a few issues. Teal guard uniforms on a green field blend too much so that they almost become invisible. However, the teal on the copper tarps at the front sideline was effective. I still don't understand the copper-colored rolling structures. That being said, that year I fell in love with Picture Studies from Adam Shoenberg specifically because of Will Pitts arrangement. I also love how Phantom linked it to the New World.
