  1. Well there are a few flaws with argument: 1-no bugles no drum corps !! ( so already changed ) 2-We are now brass and percussion bands with color guard?? ( different sound ) 3-drum corps has changed with every instrument change as well as guard change 4-to make your claim true we go back to bugles ( no valves .. ok maybe a piston ) color guards carry the american and state flag possibly a legion or VFW flag and are guarded by a sabre or rifle. Then it can be compared to keeping a woodwind choir a woodwind choir. 5- in some peoples eyes pitting mallets, tonal bass drums, snare carriers,Bb horns, amps, vocals, singing, asymetric drill and hopkins were all going to kill drum corps. We have heard the same cry at every point of growth, yet we enter the summer of 07 and i see DCI as strong and offering more to its fans than ever before.Could woodwinds really kill that ?? I dont know , but i dont think so.I know i enjoy these summer touring groups of students that perform on football felds all over the country....WHAT ever we call them !!

  4. Fan of all guard and drum corps. And since i retired from drum corps . I have seen more guard shows in last 3 years than i have drum corps shows.
  5. The crystal ball says DCI is now DCAE Drum Corps all electric Cavies -do robots programed to be a cavalier Cadets - combine with American Idol and simon is new director each winner must spend one summer on tour BD-is actually all digital and only appears on jumbotrons The DCTV is in it 8 th year and rondo is replaced with Digital rondo Oh Who wins ?? Who cares we wont agree on that here either in 10 years. Judges are replaced by text voting to determine winner.
  6. What if George was hired by Crossmen in 79 after age out year? Would cadets have folded or moved to texas ?? What if Suncoast was still around today ? Would Boston have ever made the move they have? What if Gale Royer stayed in Iowa? Would Santa Clara even have been a corps?? What if i had never met the great buddies i have because of drum corps?
  7. Michael, I heard they had 65,000 in attendance at the Georgia Dome for that show and that it was incredible.
  8. It has always been passed by the instructors and will probably always will be. It is the directors that have final say .
  9. Greg Orwoll Cavies -Sop i believe but i know he rook outed from Cavies
  10. I never read too much into the numbers turnout until i know what the break down was . If it was 100 snares then 150 is bad . If it was balanced then no problem. I am sure they are fine . Only real concern would be guard hopefuls and i see no word on that yet .
  11. I graduated in 1978 and mine LOVED it !! He led to my being involved as well. Most of the directors I work for now also support it and would not stop a student from marching if the student wanted too.
  12. ALL HAIL BOZO !! ALL HAIL BOZO !!! SEND IN THE CLOWNS !!! anda 1 anda 2 anda 3 TWEEET !!!
  13. See what happens when the collective tuba brain goes missing ?? See how many tubas does it take to fill out one dot book !! No seriously Folks , WAKE UP !! we have 4 more whole notes to learn and we only have an hour !! Day dreams of the day i picked tuba over the trumpet !1 What was i THINKING ?????
  14. safe guess that as brass caption head at boston he is not working with cap reg. but i have been wrong once before .
  15. I believe Teal is fine and have a feeling they might even do a recruiting camp in south fla area at some point. Randy is a family based guy that has deep drum corps roots. Randy is a stand up guy that i support. I hope the corps can provide for the students what they say they will . Magic, Kawanis, or Teal. I wish you all good luck.
  16. Preacher om Brother Gary Count me IN !!!!! Let me know what i can do to help. I am making myself available anyway i can be used !! enough said!! Jeff Bridges
  17. I will not debate this issue but i will say you are not in the know. Unless you worked with the corps and in the office you really have no idea . I have and i know what YEA has meant to the Crossmen. I know we were 7th in 2001 . I know that did not equal a huge influx of cash in donations. In fact they have been in fianls more than they have been out. So the last couple of seasons have no direct Impact other than the monsy for show appearance is not as much as it was . The Crossmen had drum deals , horns deals, sticks, heads , flags and uniforms thru sponsors provided thru YEA . We have quality trucks and food programs. We also had bus issues but many others do as well. We do not raise the same money as the Cadets in souvies or campaign drives. Yet we had quality equipment , staff and everything available to us that other Div 1 corps had.In many cases we had more. All i hope is this moves gives them security in all aspects of the activity.Since 1999 there have been 5 directors. 5 tour directors, many staff changes and that needs to cease. As i stated i hope this change of direction is the last one for a while and they can build for the future .Good luck Bones . I fixed the end quote tag....Mike
  18. He clearly states what he thinks and always has . Agree or disagree his past and present has plenty of backing. I took from the article that melody is missing and i agree in general with Frank. Quincey Jones had a comment about lack of melody a few years ago that i agreed with also. I have never met anyone more open than Frank and i enjoyed the article greatly for his insight.
  19. Well i have some background with the Crossmen and I am left confused, concerned, and with many questions the press release did not answer.I will as i usually do got straight to the horses mouth to ask my questions. I saw something coming as early as 2001 . After being there for 2 years and seeing numbers crunched to make ends meet something had to give at some point.YEA has provided more than most will ever know or understand to the survival of the Crossmen. As a former member and director I thank George and the board of YEA for all they have provided.I believe that this move would not have been made if they were not convinced it would be in the best interest of the Crossmen. That said I surely understand the plight of the current members and alumni. I myself have many mixed emotions about this move as i sit here trying to guess what the future holds for my corps. So i decided i am not going to guess but i will simply wish my corps the best in this move to Texas. Many did not like the move to YEA but it produced many great shows and 11 years of incredible experinces for the marching members . I mean for me, i get to see my buddy Al Chez play on tv 5 nights a week , i doubt i would have met my new friend had i not been at the Crossmen.I have years of great memories that will stay with me no matter where the corps is moved. My memories of marching in a cape ,pushing a few busses ,being keyed from a press box for being too loud , Randy driving the bus away from Princeton, and a few other priceless stories will stay with me and my corps buddies for life. Having marched with folks like Mark Thurston,Jim Dwyer , Jill Moyer,Brett Mascaro,And countless others you have gone on to give back to the activity. I can only say those memories stay with me where I am. The thrill of learning from the likes of Thom Hannum, Jerry Kelsey, and Frank Dorritte to name a few was priceless. The biggest thrill of going back as director for 2 years and sharing the Crossmen experinces with new staff guys like Ed Devlin,, Dean Musson, Chuck Naffier , Lee Beddis,Evan , Ron and many others was priceless. So , as the Corps moves to Texas new memories will surely unfold for myself ,alumni and future Bones.I hope they work to keep certain traditions alive and to keep the legacy intact. While forging new ones with new people. Is it doom and gloom?? No !! IS it Easy street because they moved ?/ NO !! But what in drum corps is ?? Again I wish the corps well and my heart goes out to any current members displaced because the corps is too far away .I look forward to getting some questions answered about the approach that will be used to handle current members . And few more i will keep to myself and my closest friends and corps buddies. Good Luck BONES !!!!
  20. As Director of the Crossmen we had a trainer that was a student trainer in college that needed the time and we were a perfect fit for that person to get additional training. She dealt with all injuries and doctor runs. The members would check in with her first thing in AM if they needed attention or taping or what ever the injury involved . The trainer would report to me if the member needed down time or was ready to do the day even if limited .The Staff would check with myself or her and they had no say or the ability to override the call made by the trainer. It was very very helpful and removed any temptation by the staff , members or the injured member to get back on the field before fit to do so.
  21. I believe this is an excellent match of talent and style !! I hope for Lee he can find a home for a while at Crown.
  22. I know this . I talked to Mark several times while working with Crossmen and while he entertained the idea at that time he was unable to commit the time he knew the job needed. Mark is an outstanding talent and he would be the top of anyones list . But he is also very understanding of all that is required and a true professional. It would be great if he could !!
  23. I agree they were no where near 12th in guard . If they were 12th then i am the POPE and i am not catholic nor do i own that very cool Hat !! Mike is very talented and experinced but so was the last staff..Good luck to the new and the old .
  24. Incredible post !! Best of the year by far . Reminds me of the movie " Finding Neverland " when he planted children in the audience because they would get it and enjoy the play for what it was and not worry about what it is supposed to be. Got to love it !! Jeff
