  1. Marc is a one of the greatest in the business ever !! Plain and simple. He has always helped others and has been a key player in guard involvement in design and on getting guards to be rewarded for skills and as a design element. He has incredible insight to color and design and i am proud to say thank you for giving me advice over many years . And i hope for many more to come. I wish Marc well with continued work in the art world of new york and beyond. Jeff
  2. I actuall think and have for a while that DCI should produce DVD's on judging for people to buy . Future judges , fans and instructors alike may have an interest .
  3. Not angry at all . Just stating facts . I have no issue with people having them but i do take issue with people acting like there is something being hidden from them. Maybe my passion gets in the way yet again . My point is go past knowing and lets talk about the knowledge and use of any criteria . Maybe because i know the criteria and never had an issue getting them when i needed them . Contact your fave corps and ask for a copy . email DCI and see if they will sale you a rule book and judges manual . Just simply addressing some that act like they would know more about what judge was right or wrong if they had them . Not angry at your suggestion at all .
  4. Come on people ! Lets talk about this for a second or 3 . Do you know the background of umpires , officals or olympic judges ?? Have you read an officlals book to understand every call that is made . Even the strike zone , as cleary as it is defined , is not called the same from umpire to umpire. You have to be in the shoes at the moment to see what they saw and how they saw it . What makes our activity any different ?? It is the Instructors and designers jobs to know the criteria , the judge and the background of the judges. The same way it is for a manger to know the way officals call a game. When i first started judging i thought it was easy . How hard could this be ?? Until you see a show thru a tape recorder and a certain caption. Do you really watch the show and say well let me just focus on the visual effect tonight ?? Or I will stand on the track and follow just the field brass judge and hear what they hear !! Isolating a show on a caption is different than how a fan views a show.As a Fan i might be drawn to all captions a various stages of the show depending on how well they were performed. WOw that was a cool visual effect or oh my god the brass line blew that attack !! A long time ago there was olympic style judging where there were 5 judges talking about anything and everything write a number out of 100 . Then throw out the high and the low numbers and average the 3 middle ones . There is a reason that is not used anymore in corps or bands. Instructors and Judges wanted caption judging. The thought being we had a chance to score better if we had more captions that reconized strengths and we could improve more if the comments were more stream lined to a certain caption . We wanted Music people talking about music and visual people talking about visual !! Plain and simple we wanted more judges with less points so spreads would be closer . What ever the system or the sheet it is the teachers that have to know the criteria not the people who watch.Do you really think you would know more if you have never judged ?? The criteria is a guideline . Each judge brings the experince they have to the show on that night and use the criteria to guide them to a final number based on the knowledge they have learned over years. I think i have been in every type of critique there is and most have been positive dialogue. A few have been pointless and a smaller few have been outrage and anger . Most of the anger outburst were passion based . A heat of the moment reaction and when i have done that i have regretted all but 2 in over 20 years. Those 2 I still feel i was in the right to react as i need on behalf of the performing unit and staff. And even with that only one did i think my reaction got the notice it deserved . Judges are human and react honestly to what they saw and heard . One example... I was judging field visual at a band show i was on side 2 in the back and was watching a section behind me when a huge collison happened on side 1 front . I never saw it . By the time i worked my way around it was recovered . I had them in 1st place . The upstairs judges did not because they did see it and reacted as they should have . It was after the show i discovered what happened but the bottom line was i didnt see it . You see or hear what you see and hear as it relates to your caption. Knowing the sheets would be basicly useless unless you know how to apply the knowledge of judging to that sheet .I am a visual person with music background. Could i judge field music ?? Yes . Could i judge with the knowledge of someone that had been doing it for a long time ?/ No WAY !! Wanna know the sheets buy a rulebook ?? Wanna know how to use them you got to judge and train and build experince or they might as well be blank sheets of notebook paper !!
  5. Agreed ... This would make the price more than worth it ... I will Pay to see the Alumni Project . Just make it available to season pass members PLEASEEEE!!!!!!
  6. Indy is a great city and some nice places to hang out close to stadium downtown. I think this is a great move for DCI and the retractable roof makes it a no brainer !! IMHO. Great job Dan and DCI now finals has a home !!
  7. 8. I posted earlier here but this was my first also . Small World! What else i like is reading this type forum and seeing how many shows i had a corps compete . Funny how many of us have been in the same place at the same time for different reasons and we dont know each other .
  9. Time to move this event !! And it would be LONGGGGGGGGG overdue. THe warm up has always been an issue for fans . Parking a big issue for corps and fans . History has little to do with any other moves DCI has made so why does it matter here ?? MOve the DCI East event to a venue that can be better promoted and provide fans a better experince .If numbers mean anything and i believe they do , San Antonio and Atlanta attendance is proof the fans want a better venue even if in a dome .You want to know the show will go on since you plan a week-end get away around it .
  10. Harold " robby " Robinson. Robbo had his ways but i always new he loved the corps and the members of the corps. He is a great person and i consider mself lucky to have marched for him and with his 2 kids .
  11. 1976 Atlanta Fulton County Stadium --Doc Severson did an hour and half concert before the show then there were 9 or 10 corps and the ticket for all of it was 5 bucks !!
  12. The end of this journey is just the start of a new one. As you pass from member to alumni of the Crossmen you carry with you the spirit of all bones present future and past. I only hope you got as much from your experince as I did watching the corps perfrom this production of " Changing Lanes ." How appropriate that Changing Lanes is your age out show ,as that is what you do now as you move forward in your life .Knowing Bones is always dialed into the radio of your heart and soul.Best wishes and enjoy the rest of the ride Maybe something along those lines.
  13. Who in the last 4 years has gone out " just to entertain " ?? They are trying to compete and makes finals or in some cases semi-finals. Most are entertaining in some form, it just depends on what you deem entertaining . The example I use is TV. You make like comedy central, some else the History channel. Both are considered entertainment. Really comes down to what floats your boat or stimulates your mind .
  14. That and Audio visual blend. They are not arriving at effects at the same time and the shaping does not match the design.More often than not the visual is more musical in its phrasing. Colts also did not march well today and as i suspected and has been comfirmed by the director the drill writer was not on tour this week.I still like the show but today was not a strong run.
  15. I teach dot to dot . But you better teach recovery as well. As recovery is still on the sheets as an achievement. Knowing when to adjust is the key and the responsibility still lies with the performer . To me it is like practicing with a DR. Beat . Better know when to turn it off also .Tempos do move around more than some would like when you factor in excitement and energy a performer brings. But do they know how to handle those when they occur is important to understand for live performance.
  16. Making Finals is making Finals now matter when you did it or how you did it . It was all within the summer of competition. It is always better to be in than out .
  17. Subjective--Expressing or bringing into prominence the individuality of the artist or author. The judge brings his or her experince to the arena. The judge reads and reacts or analyzes said caption as it unfolds. The judge gives the unit a number based on a criteria reference system. To examine methodically by separating into parts and studying their interrelations the judge arrives at a number. My question to you is what is to gain for a judge cheat ?? What is this political gain you speak of ?? I have yelled , screamed ,raised the thunder and delivered the lighting and made a fool of myself at times in critiques. I have had great conversations that helped far more often. But have never thought a judge just outright cheated and lied on a DCI tour. Oh yes i have not agreed but it is my opinion against the judge. I have also walked in to critique and said we were not very good tonight! But the funny part is, NO ONE EVER complains when the the judge has them up on a bad night !! And that happens also. I have never heard this in a critique ..." What !!! Are you an IDIOT ?? We were horrible tonight !! How could you possibly have us up !!" As my friend RC once told me , " Sometimes ... your baby is bald and ugly ...But no one wants to hear that about thier baby. " Now it may grow to be a beautiful child .But tonight it was wrinkled and not looking so good . DO you think someone is getting paid to throw a show ?? DO you think judges do this because the pay is so great ?? It is not like being a professional umpire or ref. The activity is competitive , we need judges . If it were you and I on the panel you would have had Colts up it sounds. I may have on visual ensemble as well . On Brass and percussion I would have had Spirit up and by a a healthy spread in the day show. Does not make you or I right or wrong based on our experince we would have used the criteria and arrived at our decision. Thank you .
  18. My Predictions for tonight Cavies -93.45 Blue Devils 93.15 Phantom-92.35 Cadets-91.90 Bluecoats-91.55 Crown-89.75 SCV-89.55 Madison-85.75
  19. I really like this show and yes the percussion numbers are rising quickly . Unlike some others I am totally into the design and use of the guard . I agree it may just be a matter of how good everyone else is more than anything i dont like about Boston.
  20. 87-Wave -97 Colts Hummmm????? Hard to say ..... But i would guess i should not make a comeback in 2007. LOL i will Pick 87 Wave with 97 Colts close second
  21. Cant say for sure , however , we used to only call if the field was not safe from rain or mud or lighting. Most stadiums can track weather from on site , so they have an idea of how long a storm may last . SO i would guess electrical equipment is playing a roll in the number of these. It follows the history of the activity. As pits became more intergrated parts of programming you saw less stand stills if the pit could not play .
  22. Rumor i heard !! The head pieces alone were about 100 bucks each and all hand made. If that is even close to correct then YES it is wayy to late to change the costume. The Corps proper is so bright in the White that the colors dont reach as i am sure they thought they would . The colors are great and do fit the theme, so i agree at this point you better perform what you got .
  23. I really like this show also . Visually they have done a very good job with the design . Musically the drums are dirty and need to be hosed and notes removed. I know Cap Regiment has watered the drum book yet maintained the quality of the book. Also know they started that about 2 weeks before SA. Colts need to do this as the drum number on the field has been killing them.Brass needs to handle the subtle moments with far more control and quality. The designed effects are very good .The presentation of those effects need much refinement.
  24. I can tell you DCI does all it can. Seminars , speakers , open forums and other things are done at meetings. Directors openly share ideas and suggestions. But as the old saying goes, " you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink ." They have a system for reviewing a corps finances to see if they can tour . Too much to go into detail here now . But i assure what ever the issues some may have i would not place the blame at the Feet of DCI . I would look into the organization and it's operating board .
