  1. I wish Finals had been their best run, but I still love this show. A new look. A new sound. Classy and Classical AF!!! I toured most of the summer with PR while marching in NA. We were playing mostly the same music. I sure wish DCM and the other regional circuits (and corps) still existed. More shows, less travel and the little guys always being with the "Big Boys" creates some special memories. It was always nice hearing folks from PR, Madison and Star hum our show tunes at DCM Championships on our freedays. Different times.
  2. That's good news for Boston. They have a really good team of young and excited individuals on their admin team. I'm sure Scott will provide the experience and knowledge that will help round out their skills.
  3. Please don't imply racism against a diverse organization. That is what your statement was pointing at. It's ill informed, very narrow in it's view and flat out wrong. I'm not going to apologize for calling you out. This is a staff change thread. The original post you made has no business being here as it has nothing to do with the topic. If you read me as being intense in my response .. good.
  4. But I do love my brown, mixed, black, asian, pacific islander, latin, gender minority LMNOP friends there at Cadets. I won't try to change your mind about the definition of diversity or color ... or why it even matters. As said, they are good people doing a good job for the right reasons .... no matter what shade, gender or creed they are. Beyond that, I'm not going deeper into this conversation. You have an agenda. I get it. Best of luck with that.
  5. A. I'm not sure I care B. People of Color and Minorities at the board level - 8 of 16 Management level - 3 of 5 Support staff level 10 of 17 Instructional staff level 22 of 65 Again .. I don't care... but why can't you all just look this up on their website? This is public information. And why are you pushing so hard to create a problem that isn't there?
  6. Hmmmm. I can't believe that hasn't "leaked/dropped" yet.\ Maybe by morning.
  7. https://cadets.org/cadets-announce-2023-design-team Bocook, Beddis, Bilby, Whitlock, Saktig ... Murphy.
  8. There is an extremely high number of old recordings from during the season and at finals that are locked away in a DCI vault. They will never be released for consumption. The cost to get rights would be astronomical. It's quite sad. There are many shows I miss or was a part of .. and they can't be found anywhere other than on MIRC servers and private google drives. Even then, there are thousands of hours in the DCI vault that no one has access to.
  9. Interesting!!! I love that Jeff is returning to his old stomping grounds. I'm sure there will be less complaining about his numbers in Colorado.
  10. I forgot to mention BD 91-93. This was a unique time for the corps. Great musical books. Struggling percussion due to staff changes. Their visual program was finally starting to experiment on what Garfield started in 82. I highly respect the corps for this time in their history. Some of my favorite brass lines in their history .. clean or not. They were still placing in the top 5 ... I'm not sure it's underrated .. but the hornlines certainly were.
  11. 1988 SUNCOAST SOUND!!!!!!! Probably wins this thread 84-86 Suncoast Sound 1988 Star - their first serious serious attempt at being great 1990 Boston 1988 VK - am I the only one who thinks this? 98-99 Glassmen 99 BK ---- weren't they 5th in semis? 1987-1990 Northern Aurora and a dozen other Class A corps that were darn good at that time.
  12. I believe I'm correct when I say .... Licensing is now handled by DCI for this very reason. Pointing fingers around here is getting dangerous.
  13. I can only speak to the post tick era ... so here goes. I'll try to keep it orderly Comparing the top 2 all time greats (IMO) .. ZIngali and Brubaker Zingali was truly drawing what he wanted .. intervals be ###### (1.725 interval .. make it work).. grid be ######. It was always about flow, staging and expression. Brubaker was VERY grid oriented. I love him for this. The visual impact was always very linear .. organized .. easier to clean ... smart. That being said, he still had flow, great staging for voicing and expression .. just an "older school" feel to the design Beginning his career while Zingali and Brubaker were at their height ..... Rosander seemed to be a combination of them both. Freehand flow, smart gridding, good staging, he defined Vanguards visual style for 18 years? Marc Sylvester and Vanderkolff continued what ZIngali was doing .... Gaines after Brubaker .. and all have done it very well. Saktig, May, Weber and many more were the next generation. Jeff wrote subsets instead of making them up on the fly. They all got hip to the grid. (Yes, I dislike grid writing .. but that's just me). Where I find a big difference.... Brubaker still had a freehand expression to his design. It was very organic. The modern era of writers like Saktig, May, Gaines etc ... (and I mean ZERO disrespect) feels very pyware. Rosander, Vanderkolff and the rest of those early 90's cats that took over for the Legends .. some are still flexing their freehand skills. I can always see a difference when a writer who learned to write drill with computer assistance .. rather than learning to see it all "in your brain" and then write it. (I think there's the makings of a different topic here. I'm just not sure what it is yet... and sorry if I skipped around .. that's just how I think)
  14. Ahem .. where and when is Glassmen Alumni coming out? Maybe invite NA/Coachmen/Bandettes and the rest of GLJA corps to come join
  15. The last time I saw a completely straight forward music show ... was 2009 SCV - Ballet for Martha It was bucking the trend in 2009, which worked for them. IMO, if a corps were to do a straight up show based on music alone ... they would have to overwrite the crap out of it. I'm not sure anyone has the guts to do that anymore ... or wants to.
  16. I'm having visions of a 400 member prayer block coming down the 50. Drill written in 3 variations based on what can be done. A celebration of all 3 - 3petes in Cadets History - 1948. 1949 , 1950 - 1960, 1961, 1962 - 1983, 1984, 1985 I better stop .. I might start giving people ideas ......
  17. Probably not the longest, but the loudest and most sustained I ever heard was the last 45 seconds of Cavies 1991 show.
  18. Organize a board of directors File articles of incorporation Apply for a 501c3 thru the IRS Focus on raising funds buy equipment seek expert advice on what it really costs to run a drum corps seek MORE expert advice on how to operate daily, food, medical, transportation, communication, logistics, partnerships, grants, gaming laws in your state, etc etc etc etc. Keep spending your money on equipment, vehicles, property, invest .... not on people Wait 3-5 years until you have a few million $$$ in the bank .. then worry about being a drum corps If you're smart, you'll focus more on programs that service your local community, build those bridges before you add a drum corps as a program. Best of luck
  19. I can name several Cadets shows that are my top tier .... but here's one most forget: 1985 Suncoast Sound - Florida Suite by Robert W. Smith (all original music) Redone in 1989
  20. Some very VERY big assumptions have been posted in this thread. There is a very old saying at Cadets ... when they Zig we Zag. Maybe the ZAG is going traditional, marching drill and playing a meaty brass book. Sometimes old is new. Tradition is also about remembering who you are. Members at The Cadets have been repeating the same words over and over for the past few years. I've heard it way too many times to count ..... "I want to fly around the field at 212 bpm with my hair on fire in Maroon and Gold". They got what they asked for (mostly). When it was announced that the 2020 show design was being put on the shelf and the 2021 show tunes were listed .... all I heard was< "YESSSSS! In West Points? YESSSSS!!!! Wth the Stripe? YESSSSS!!!!!! Omg, I have to practice or the crowd will hate us........" I'm sure Phantom felt the same way, reacted the same way and pushed forward ... the same way. It lit a fire and hunger in their membership because they knew they had an awesome opportunity to throw one down... come what may. To assume that the 20 somethings don't want to do the same thing/look the same way/play as many notes/march actual drill - as we did back in the day is just plain wrong. Corps with a strong identity and tradition attract a certain type of person. That person wants to continue the legacy that made that corps AWESOME. The problem for the designers is figuring out how to use that tradition and identity and merge it with modern ideas that will appeal to judges, membership and alumni. II think the big takeaway from 2021 is ... what will the judging community do with this new information? What will the design teams and administrations do with the rules congress's going forward? A shift has been needed for while. I think it's finally here. I just hope those in power have the foresight to do the right thing with this new knowledge.
  21. This happens more often than you think. Many instruments are pre-sold for immediate delivery after finals. Some schools are close by and pick them up. Sometimes a box truck loads the entire pit and drives to (Texas usually) deliver it immediately. Trumpets are about the only brass instrument that crosses over to indoor programs. All of the others are used for outdoor only. Strangely, trumpets are the hardest to sell.
