  1. Awesome. Jeff Bridges is the program coordinator. He was great in True Grit and Tron!
  2. Has anyone ever approached DCI about putting each year's DCI CD's/Recordings onto iTunes and charging not only per album but to where people could purchase just a single corps show? For those in the know, does Apple/iTunes charge a certain percentage of the income that DCI would make to advertise/market their CDs? I was just doing some shopping on iTunes and was just wondering to see if this had ever been thought of or brought to DCI's attention.
  3. No one will. The Fan Network Award is the new award. I think it will be down to Cadets, Cavaliers and Bluecoats.
  4. You also have to remember that this is typically the weekend of San Antonio, which is usually where 90 is broken. If it happens it won't be too far off from what is usually happening at this time of the year.
  5. Yes. They still do. It is usually given out the night before or the night that the corps leaves spring training for their first stop of tour. The bead and the member shirt are given out on the same night.
  6. You also have to remember that the spread between Troopers/Academy (the only reason I group these 2 together is because they have both won a head-to-head show) and Blue Knights right now is pretty close to what the spread was between Troopers and Academy at the beginning of the year and Troopers ended up closing the gap. Obviously anything can happen but small spreads (1-1.5 points) can be closed especially this early.
  7. You should buy the Michael Tilson Thomas and San Francisco Symphony recording off of iTunes. Hands down one of the best recordings I own.
  8. I think that it depends on if they are a senior in high school that is going to be a freshman at the school or if he has been there for a couple of years. Some universities have different marching styles/techniques that are different than what high schools do and as an incoming freshman I could see the importance placed on the student for needing to be there. However, if they are a junior or even sophomore for that matter and know the drill and know the way things work then I don't see a problem with them missing. Where I went to school, if you were a music major you were allowed to miss any days of band camp/leadership camp due to drum corps (typically it was just 1 or 2 days). For those who weren't music majors it was as easy as being an adult and talking with the director. I think some college (and high school) directors get a 'sour taste' of drum corps because of the way kids approach the directors about it and have an immediate negative attitude when they are initially told "NO" or "You will lose drum major, leadership position, scholarship, etc." by the director. Finding a solution on both ends is easily do-able just as long as the student is willing to work with the director(s). As far as the scholarship is concerned, it seems like a solution of being in another concert ensemble or helping out with rehearsal set up or some other band-related activity could suffice enough to make up the week or weeks that they missed for drum corps.
  9. Tim Snyder marched Star and recently worked with Crown on their brass staff and is also the head of Box 5 Productions.
  10. The community college next door, which someone mentioned, has a huge parking lot so I could see Cirque using that parking lot for their show and parking and then using the Berry Center lot for the DCI show. Also they could use half of the parking lot for parking of Cirque and then half for the DCI show. I am sure they will work it out. They typically do.
  11. The Southwest Tour sounds interesting. I wonder if DCI SA will be less attended since the people in both of those areas will get to see everyone prior to the regional. Also, noticed that there is no more TOP 8 Murfreesboro but a 2 day midweek regional leading up to Atlanta.
  12. Was it Doyle Gammil? I have the mp3 of that if you PM me. In 07 during Crown's visit to Lubbock, he came out to rehearsal and visited us. It was a monumental day for the Crown members.
  13. Neil worked at Crown 03-04, BD B 05, SCV 07 (when Nick Williams was there) and Crown 08. He is a great instructor and knows his stuff. Trying to answer your question, he is a BD guy, if that helps. He will definitely get the job done. I marched at Crown when he was there 03, 04 and 08. I am proud to see him get a job like this, good luck Neil!
  14. It isn't like that here at my school. During the fall semester there is really no excuse for missing a football game for anything. Now during the spring semester, the only real problem falls with concert band rehearsals on Fridays and in those cases it is fine as long as you have a sub come play for you. Same thing with basketball band.
  15. But if a caption head comes in and is trying to change some of the approaches the brass line is taking then it is going to take more than a year to reach the goals that the caption head has set for the line. It won't be perfect right away. There isn't much wiggle room these days at SCV, or so it seems.
  16. I don't know many university marching bands that get their money coming from the music department so having to find donations, funds, etc. to cover all of the costs of traveling to a competition. In most (if not all) cases the Athletic Department is funding most/everything for the band. There are also some BCS schools that have deals through the Athletics for equipment (Nike, Reebok, Adidas, etc.) that is more money. I am not sure of any band director that would turn down that support to send their college band to a competition. Like dorph31 mentioned, many of the kids in college marching band are there for the football and the excitement that comes with that. From just reading your posts EN929, you are pretty adamant on having this happen so go for it. Take a poll among college directors and athletic directors, from BCS schools to HBCU schools. It would take an agreement from both to really be successful.
  17. One word.....football. It would be unreal for a BCS school and those with highly competitive football teams to be able to get a show on the field that they could compete with. Where I go to school we do about 3-5 shows a year, that are easy enough for everyone to learn (drill-wise).
  18. Through the Fan Network on DCI.org, Crown has released the 2008 Studio Recordings that were recorded Finals Week in Bloomington, Indiana. Each piece is available for purchase in brass only, full percussion, battery only and full corps. I already got mine and they are really good, just wish I didn't have to buy each one individually.
  19. For those who couldn't be at "The Countdown", are they going to put the sneak previews of Blue Stars, Crown and BD on dci.org?
  20. At Crown, they don't let us charge it except at night when everyone is in the gym. If someone decides to charge it then administration takes it from you. Other than that, everyone just tries to get off the bus as fast as possible to get/find a plug.
  21. I remember in 04 for the Bristol Fourth of July Parade, Roger Williams University was VERY BUSY! Crown pulled in and got to stay in the dorms along with the Boston Crusaders and East Coast Jazz, but just down in the gymnasium on campus the Cadets, Crossmen and Spirit were all sharing the facilities. Needless to say breakfast before the parade the next morning was a little busy. Also this past year in Arizona, Pacific Crest shared housing sites with Crown. They came in the night before the Regional and used the other 2 fields that we didn't use and then showered while we were on lunch break before they left for the show. Things happen over the course of the summer and housing sites cancel and corps have to go somewhere.
