  1. Lots of memories here. 1979 was my first year with the Blue Stars, and I had the experience of the dreaded 13th place finish in 1980. I still think that "Strike Up the Band" was one of the most technical pieces ever put on the field (at least up to that point). One of my fondest drum corps memories was waiting to go into the stadium to watch finals in 1980 when North Star marched by us to go onto the field. The whole Blue Star corps burst into applause for North Star as they passed us. I think about that almost every day as an example of how to put aside rivalries and cheer on your competitors and appreciate their success.
  2. Funny, the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was that book!
  3. But would Mr. Butters be willing to grant the sync rights?
  4. I was with Wausau Story then and I think we might have been on Golden, CO. Someone mentioned it during a rehearsal break IIRC.
  5. I remember some serious buckle clinks when I marched with the Blue Stars in the late 70's. Those cross-belts buckles were positioned just in the right spot. Strange the horns didn't get too beat up!
  6. Weird, I seem to remember the crowds being a lot bigger "back in the day!" Maybe it just looked that way from the field.
  7. Jeeze! It's just drum corps! You guys really need to get a life!
  8. You aren't even CLOSE to being an old fart yet. Just wait a few years and see how you feel.
  9. "When you walk to the john, hold your head up high!"
  10. There's a guy giving periodic updates on the Blue Stars forum if you are interested: http://www.bluestars.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=9723
  11. There are a few updates coming from http://twitter.com/#!/chadg
  12. Maybe to honor the tradition of the old CYO nationals??
  13. Wow, looks like that judging panel had some pretty high standards tonight!
  14. I think DCI fixed that computer security problem. There is no chance of the scores being published before the end of the show anymore.
  15. Nope! It stopped being Drum Corps when they added the third valve.
  16. I would definitely be nice to see DCI Midwest back again like in the late 70's, early 80's. That stadium was made for drum corps (except for the mosquitoes...they can stay home!).
  17. Found this on this website Proposal No. 1035 by Santa Clara Vanguard's director Gail Royer and the Madison Scout's director Bill Howard stated: Each bugle shall be pitched in the key of G and may have two piston valves, or one piston and one rotary, or two rotary valves used freely to play in tow additional keys. Any other variation of these types of instruments and all other types of instruments are illegal. No two piston soprano bugles may be utilized before the 1977 season. No two piston bass baritones may be utilized before the 1978 season. No two piston mellophones, French horns, flugles, or Contra Bass bugles may be utilized before the 1979 season.(89) I marched during that time and this is pretty much what happened.
  18. I'm pretty much in agreement with the ratings, but I'm tempted to put Hofbrau on top. I liked the atmosphere there!
