  1. I personally think you can get a great experience out of any active drum corps. It all comes down to how much effort you put in to it. The experience doesn't just come with being in the corps, it comes from your work IN the corps. You should be pushing yourself every minute of the rehearsal day to get better.
  2. Ah, I see exactly what you want now. Hmmm, yeah that 4th person does kinda throw a wrench into it.
  3. Yeah, an even number kinda makes it awkward. I just think of the shell game that you see on the jumbotron at sporting events. Have you tried with just drawing it out set by set? I would checkout Cadets 2000, they had 4 tenor players weaving in and out during their sideline feature. You might get some ideas from that.
  4. BD had a similar moment in the early 2000's with a cymbal rack (can't remember which year). Cavies pit did something similar this past season (2011) as well.
  5. Why? Because it's the same color? Star 93 had an edgy/sharp look to it.
  6. 2 things: 1) There's more brass players in the stage video to the right (you can barely see them in the shadows) so you can NOT get an accurate count of brass members unless you were there that evening. 2) When they said they just received 56 brass instruments, they weren't implying that they HAD 56 brass players. They can accommodate up to 56 (and that's their goal) which I'm sure they'll eventually get to. I wouldn't be surprised if they pass out brass music to members of Cadets Uno (who are capable time wise) to fill any holes they might have after DCI Finals are over.
  7. I'm sure Tama will put out finishes just as nice as Pearl/Yamaha/Mapex/Dynasty. They all have the capabilities of doing the same finishes. Some of them just have different methods when it comes to a wrap on the drum (glue on just the edges, glue on the entire thing, etc). Unless Tama forks over some free drums to a top 12 drumline, I don't forsee them having much presence in DCI.
  8. Really? Parking in the grass? Come on folks. That's not that big on an issue. As for parking, yeah, there's some un-safe areas around the stadium, but if you pay to park in lots that are ran by the Citrus Bowl (or whatever company runs it) then you're fine. It's not like there's 65k people trying to park there for a DCI event, there's TONS of safe and normal parking. Now, parking for a bowl game there is a different story, when there's 60-75k people parking and tailgating, safe parking spots come at a premium price ($25+). It all just boils down to rain. Yeah, good show in 2008, good lineup in 2009. However the 2009 show was a disaster until the standstills began. It was not fun standing in a couple inches of rain that had flooded the bottom concourse of the East side of the stadium. Also, not all of the standstills were show music, some just did concert tunes, which was a bummer. I wonder why Alltel Stadium up in Jacksonville has never come into discussion? Or has it? It's MUCH less of a drive for the corps. Great sightlines from both the lower deck and upper deck. Yeah, it rains there just as much, but it's a shorter drive for the corps.
  9. AH that's right, I forgot about the PAC. Yes, the turf will be nice for drum corps, but turf isn't going to be a reason for DCI to bring a big show back. Unless the city of Orlando invests in one of those robotic clouds like Qatar is building or puts a dome over the Citrus Bowl, I don't forsee a large event ever coming back.
  10. Couple things on this... 1) Don't believe it till it actually happens. This was originally part of a 3 part Downtown Orlando plan a few years back. First was to clean up and make Downtown Orlando better (which they did), second was building the new Amway Center (which they did), then 3rd was to update the Citrus Bowl. Part 3 got nixed due to budget. I'm very happy that they're trying again to get it done however. I'm still disappointed that instead of just resodding the field, they chose to go with Field Turf (I have a firm belief that all state of Florida football stadiums should have natural grass!!) I understand that the maintenance and upkeep of the field turf is better for the Citrus Bowl, since the maintenance and up keep of natural grass (when it's barely being used) really starts to add up over time. 2) DCI Orlando will continue to be just a 5-7 corps show for years to come. Until DCI breaks the mold (if they ever decide to) of the current tour structure, then a larger show in Orlando just wouldn't be feasible. Right now, the cluster of corps that are performing in Orlando this summer are coming from Tennessee, through Alabama, down to Orlando then up to the Carolina's. Later in the season when EVERYONE is in Atlanta on a Saturday, it wouldn't make sense financially for DCI to journey to Orlando (it's an 8-10 hour bus ride), plus there's always the uncertainty of rain in Florida during the summer. The only dome in Florida that could host a DCI show is busy with baseball season. I think DCI did a great job this year of putting together a great lineup for DCI Orlando. It's not a huge show, but the corps that are coming have very large followings.
  11. The major drum manufacturers do have deals with drum head companies. However, they're not in the business of stocking every different kind of marching head that everyone uses. Plus, some drum staffs like to be the ones that put the heads on their drums.
  12. You can't beat Dr. Iain Moyer's arrangements. His writing was awesome 10 years ago back with Glassmen and he's taken it to 11 over the past decade. They've got an aluphone in the pit this year, should create some other cool "new" sounds that have never been heard on a drum corps field.
  13. tie a pair of shoes together and drape them over the bell while holding the horn up.
  14. Yeah, the Sheiks were awesome. They used to work with a lot of local high school bands as well.
  15. They all lost the same job, most of those guys were from the performing group the Shieks over at Busch Gardens.
  16. That's just a picture from a fan. Madison is still on Yamaha's.

  18. I think it all comes down to demand. I know last year they streamed prelims online (for a price). I'm sure they'll be doing the same again this year.
  19. That, and their last 2 attempts weren't used by BD.
  20. BD will have something new. Those drums have probably already been sold by Fork's.
  21. Ugh, finally!!! Someone in here with a correct perspective on pricing. I was actually coming here to post the same type of info. My numbers fall very close to yours. Your electronics numbers are a little low in my opinion, but then again I'm not sure what type of deal the top groups get on their electronics. I know exact figures that they get their percussion equipment for however. You don't want to forget microphones and a TON of cables (which add up). These numbers are all just fluff though. If you're a start up organization looking to get all new equipment, then 100k is going to be well below the actual price. New groups don't get endorsements, and if they do, they're starter endorsements which get them very limited stuff.
  22. I don't think the system blue drums are coming out till 2013? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
