  1. I marched at Arrowhead in '88 and have lived in KC ever since. It is my understanding that the new grass vs. the turf is a big problem. The Chiefs used to allow tons of other events (Monsters of Rock, Paul McCartney, Billy Graham, Sunday Sunday Sunday monster truck rallies), but Arrowhead stands mostly quiet during the football off season now. Given the amount of corps these days, I don't think housing would be a big problem. Plus to my home town for BBQ, hotels, hospitality, and location. Negative is no stadium willing to house DCI. Sound was great, BTW- both for performers and spectators.
  2. Of course I'm a drummer, but I think that there was a huge difference in drum tuning and instrumentation from different caption heads in the past that seems to have gone by the wayside. Walking around a parking lot in the 80's there was no mistaking a Hurley Phantom line from a Float BD line from a Hannum Garfield line from a distance based on tuning alone. There were also always wierd tenor set ups (the Star snare-instead-of-spock) or extra "stuff" in the snare or bass set ups (thinking of all the Jeff Moore cowbell/splash/ribbon crash/jam block combinations). The activity seems more uniform corps to corps to my ear from the standpoint of tenor pitches, bass muffling, snare sound, battery instrumentation, and pit tonality. I'd love to see someone out with mylar snare heads, or 2 tenor lines, or lots of basses, or...well...something different.
  3. I have a son. He is in fifth grade. He takes piano lessons and has good ears, and a pretty good musical brain. I do not push. I will be happy to see him happy. He knows that I am saving a Madison Scouts jacket for him. He does not know that I will cry like a baby if I am the one who gets to put it on him at some future Memorial Day camp. I know the snare drummer in the most recent Madison video release, whose father was the architect of the Scouts front ensemble from '78-09, more or less. Am I jealous? Umm yes! My son will spend a few hours watching my favorite corps this summer when they come to town, and I will continue to dream. I also have a second grade daughter. She is also musical, but is a wonderful dancer (MHO, Mike!). She can march wherever she wants, but today I would reccomend 1. SCV 2. Phantom Regiment 3. Colts 4. Blue Coats (I mean Bluecoats :-) ) 5. Duh! Pioneer! Who knows what the future holds! (but if my son decides to march Cavaliers, the future holds "you are grounded young man!")
  4. I don't want to start rumors or cause trouble...but... A little birdie finally tells me that the Kansas City show on Monday, July 19th will be held at Staley High School in North Kansas City. I have no real knowledge about the school or the stadium except that it opened recently (2007?). Line up: BD, BK, Colts, Colt Cadets, X-men, Scouts, PR, Pioneer I can't confirm this venue, but believe the source. I have no idea why it is taking so long to officially announce a site. I hope this helps some folks!
  5. In '88 I polished my shoes like 50 times. Ageout year? Hit 'em with the field paint 30 minutes before showtime! Worked like a charm! Loved the 2005 SCV uniform, btw.
  6. '83 Whitewater prelims for my first show, Troopers drum line in a Hardees parking lot the night before my first taste of live drum corps.
  7. forget synths and 48 in the color guard... I want triples with scoops playing with hard felts, and a cymbal line carrying 24"s, please.
  8. Before the first MSARP rehearsal we got together at the Coliseum bar in Madison for a social. We were hanging out with Taras and talking about the front line, and he told us about Bill, knowing that he had played glockenspiel in the 1950's. He assured us that we would find a place for him, even if it had to be a watered down part. Needless to say, at the first rehearsal Bill showed up with the marimba book mostly memorized while the rest of us were struggling and trying to sight read, and played the marimba 1 book the rest of the summer. Bill was a quiet guy, a very fine player, a true gentleman, and I think he really enjoyed hanging out with the "pit era" percussionists. RIP, Bill. And of course, MYNWA
  9. As an alum, I know this is unusual for all corps, especially Madison. However... If a lead baritone from Crown came to the Scouts and auditioned for the solo... If the center snare from Phantom wanted to drum in a Hannum arranged line... If the next great winter guard choreographer wanted to leave Cavies and head 2 hours north... ...you would be crazy to turn them away. First hand accounts confirm that he's the guy? Good enough for me! Welcome to the Madison Scouts, John. Look up Craig Mason sometime- my favorite conductor of all time. He's still in the neighborhood, I think!
  10. Do you mean to say that there are "Drum Corps Performances" on something called "Youtube"? I've never heard of such a thing!
  11. Heck, it was the '80's! I think Cavies '84 was the first... could be wrong. Colts '87 had double drums on the top 3 basses in the drum solo. Future Corps had one guy with 3 drums stacked!
  12. Thanks jamesjones0611! At Madison we thought the word "pit" was kind of lame so we attempted to call ourselves the "trench"... kind of a warfare vibe to the front ensemble (which we all preferred in a formal sense). I still have a Madison Trench tee-shirt hanging around next to my spats...
  13. seems like 4 is a good number of faves... 1984- love the whole top 12. 1988- duh... 1995- heck of a year to be a fan of any corps. 2006- liked the jr's, loved the experience of the MSARP!
  14. You know.... "Dead Guy Sword of Vengeance" would make a pretty good band name...
  15. I remember the discussion in Orlando 1996 that BD and PR should set up, facing opposite sides of the stadium (fans of each corps on each side), and march their show again. Whoever had the most members standing after the last note wins! My money was on Phantom Regiment.
  16. Sam, before I read any of the responses I knew who I was voting for! 1984 Blue Devils.
  17. never been a #4 so loved or remembered. make it the 1995 Madison Scouts!
  18. In 1988 I said "what the % is that?" ever since I've loved it! 1988 Suncoast Sound for me!
  19. I'm NOT going to copy this, and then change it to say... "when you hear any version of malaguena not done by the Madison Scouts and cringe" and then type "fixed!" ... because I'm not. really. I am not going to do this.
  20. Believe it or not, my dad used to wake me up with a Don Ellis 8-track over the whole house intercom in the morning- probably explains my mental instabilities today! for those who don't know, Bulgarian Bulge is in 33/16 time...
  21. ...agreed. worst thing in an otherwise great show... My contribution to "Would Never Fly Now" 1) Lemon Squeeze 2) Remembrance 3) I Can Cook, Too How do I know? Didn't fly THEN!
