  1. Fixed some punctuation issues. Now, while the DCA tenure is not as strenuous or every day as a traditional DCI tour, I doubt that George and company will allow the corps rehearsals to be anything less of the 'Cadets Experience' than normal. If anything, due to said time restrictions, the experience may become even more so to accompany the weekend only atmosphere once the season truly begins. Thus, the corps COULD in fact continue to hold the weekend camps but have it as Friday Nights to Sunday Afternoons instead of Saturday Mornings. Thus maintaining a DCI Open class style with the exception of Performance weekends.
  2. Olive, what was said in responses by Sayre and I was going to offer was a statement that his thoughts are mistaken in that 'there isn't anything DCA or DCI around here at all' when he decided to look at Cadets2. While I can respect his decision to look about them and have no preference where he goes, being informed about other organizations that are probably a bit closer than he originally thought is more of a GOOD thing to show that if one corps doesn't work out, there's other options instead of just sitting on the couch for the summer waiting for Band Camp. Many of the programs stated may be a lot cheaper than the rumored price tag for C2 and may also provide a more individualized teaching and learning experience while still competing at a high level. Hence why there were statements from people who are in other corps just to reaffirm the membership is around his immediate area and carpools are a possibility. He could march with other programs and help those grow through word of mouth as well, which helps grow the overall activity, thus making your statement of 'Way to continue the hindrence of DCA's growth' in reality Null. In regards to his topic idea, I can probably say expect to be given some instruction on technique, a lot of chorale and other breathing work and a meeting or two about what is hoped to be accomplished with the corps as well as expectations, regulations and the like. I recommend the OP go in, expect to be given a good 'chops' workout and try to take it all in and use the teaching given to improve.
  3. Why is this a 'Look out below' scenario? Or in which case are you saying such a thing? The Bucs lost a lot of staff through their Staff connection with YEA and the Cadets with the creation of Cadets2 but GAINED a lot of talent by grabbing other VERY Highly regarded staff. If there is a drop (like 2nd to 4th with an evolution in another program and the like) it might be from just an unfamiliarity with the current DCA judging not to mention most staffs need a year to gel and mesh correctly, which will be addressed and worked out in the following years but I don't see a free fall of what you may be talking about in ANY sort of placements in the near or distant future.
  4. Lose a couple bullets, find some Full Metal Jackets to replace... Nice reloading there, Bucs. Good luck in 2012!
  5. I believe there's a stern copyright excluding the music of 'Gladiator' from being used on the field at current. I do agree that the music would be well received though, IMHO.
  6. Then what about Renegades and Dream and other corps past the Rockies? The only logistically feasible idea MAY be going to Texas but that's still a harsh idea for the western corps to pull off and the last thing the activity should have is some sort of required out of region show just for SEEDING. I understand that MBI usually goes to a show in the Northeast nowadays but what about Govies? Or what about the Lakeshoremen if they return to DCA's? Cincinnati Tradition as well would have that little movement issue though not AS harsh as MBI and Govenaires (You could even count Chops, Inc. if they come back). Now that being said, if DCA were to have such a rule but allow an exception for corps going beyond a certain distance or if a corps cannot fiscally handle the rule.
  7. You forgot the Factory Whistle at the end when Ren wraps his hands around Stimpy's throat. And about Hazo's 'Ride' on a drum corps show... time signature changes AHOY! It'd be loud and awesome but wow that would make some performer just go 'huh?' with finding out how to mark time.
  8. To give an, albeit belated, recap of the topic ahead. The Bucs can be beaten. However, the path is as tough as going through the Towson, MD 4th of July Parade with no stoppages (Bucs, Fusion, Shenandoah, Sun Devils and others this past year will vouch as will I since I was there with the local 'band') I'll agree it will take 128 of the most dedicated and talented members who will begin in November (or whenever the first rehearsal is) and stick through anything and everything until Labor Day Weekend to be the best dang corps they can. The design staff, however it's assembled from old staff stalwarts to young blood, must buy into the show design and actively arrange and adjust the show to everyone's strengths. (I've read and heard from people about multiple corps getting ripped on this issue, which ties into the first point.) The general membership must also buy into the show, get a feel of the show, and attempt to portray what is required of said show. This goes from the drumline maybe varying facial expressions when there's a big part (a la a swordfight, or a classic spy v bad guy showdown like in Cavies 04). Also the guard really giving off the emotion the corps has to convey. Selling the show to get the fans and judges into it is just as much the battle for the top spots as execution, if not moreso. Then, everything must click for those special performances. Beginning with your first show whether it's Wildwood or in Georgia in late August and leading up to Rochester (or Annapolis in 2012). The scores might not seem to make sense at first, but if you see the gap closing and at a good clip, then you know you're doing something right and everyone is buying in. It's certainly possible to build a Corps to finally unseat the defending undefeated champs since 2005. Just that road is a very tough one. Good luck to all corps, maybe I'll see YOU on the 50 in 2011.
  9. Yeah, it was you... I'm the snare in the Red T shirt and putting on the uniform. Figured you should know there's another in this little discussion.
  10. Didn't know about Carla, so if there's corps experience there, then it's a default. Then you fill in the blanks.
  11. To the Snareline you can add Chad Sexton of 311. Sky Ryders and Railmen Alumnus as a snare drummer.
  12. Um... not to be a man who complains but I don't see where you get my corps' scores. For instance: Highest Score, Potomac Rover Knights: 83.340 on 7/7 Recent Score, Potomac River Knights: 82.735 on 7/9
  13. ID: MAPS1985 Corps: Potomac River Knights Class: World Location: Brunswick, MD
  14. *PRESS RELEASE TO DCP-I AND IT'S AFFILIATE FANS, CORPS DIRECTORS, ETC.* The Potomac River Knights are proud to announce their DCP-I Twelve Live season show. Mr. Scott Smith, Corps' Director, stated the following in a press conference earlier today: "I told my staff I wouldn't go this route. I gave them every indication it would never happen again. I went to that side once, and though I got medium excitement and decent scores, we lost our corps' identity. However, it became clear that this WAS out identity... we made our name through doing this. We became who we were thanks to this concept. So, it is with great pleasure that I announce the show title." The Potomac River Knights are pleased to present, "Liberation!" The show will use music from the platinum selling game, Ace Combat 6. The songs will be finalized at a later date and post. Mr. Smith began again, "Also this year, we have been in talks for our equipment and are finalizing some deals to help our performer perform their best." *This concludes this press release*
  15. I'd have to say that the returning Potomac River Knights made a very successful return to DCP-I this year. Emerging from barely competing for a semifinal spot to making it with points to spare. Mr. Smith, Corps Director Stated, "I'm happy to see where this show took us. It was a semi-bold one but it was also one that helped put away a chapter the staff wanted to forget." Then he took on a more serious note, "I do not know of all the hoopla. I did hear through the grape-vine of a director taking a once great organization and then leaving because they felt shafted from their placement. Things never work out for many but none have left the field after raising such a huge stink over it. I guess I should be relieved since the corps and myself won't have to deal with a bunch of thugs in the a former great corps. However I am, though hesitantly, hoping for the original director of that corps to return and right that ship. On that note, we should be announcing our "live" season show withing the next 2 weeks. The staff and I have made our choices and are picking between the multiple shows we have in front of us. Talk to you all soon."
  16. But why are you only looking for "World" Class? Does the thrill of making "World Class" corps make things more attractive? Why not take up Capital Regiment's offer for their bus service from Virginia Beach? They're "World Class" and probably could help you. Or, you could go for an "Open Class" corps such as Memphis Sound or along those lines. Or you can just head on up, do DCA, get some chops with Shenandoah Sound and then go for DCI. It's a very common thing nowadays for people to get some chops (or learn a horn, in general) with DCA and then go to DCI. Then when you're done with DCI (age-out, or monetary issues) you just go back to DCA and continue your corps. Sorry guys, but this seems to be one numb-skull of a poster looking for the prestige factor of "World Class" Drum corps when there are PLENTY of World Class Organizations IN GENERAL around you.
  17. Hm... I guess the adjustments to the music and the staging helped beyond words. We came out firing on all cylinders in Oklahoma City.
  18. I think the Cadets one is wrong as well, if I recall right, it's a jazz-running brass player is their main symbol beyond the "Cadets" in script. In terms of Phantom and Madison both first editions are awesome. Another thing is that I believe the "Bugle B" or the "Shielded B" should be for the Bluecoats, but that works as well.
  19. I thought 2000 was going to be a return to Rocky Point Holiday, not Appalachian Spring. At least, I thought Hopkins said it would be such before he and I'm guessing Sylvester heard the Millenium Celebration by Disney.
  20. You know, I look at this and I do agree with some of these opinions. Such as the uniforms did identify the corps. However, the modern day need for "easier to put on uniforms" seems to make said tradition take a back seat. That being said you have to respect the following corps for keeping (or returning back to) their uniform as it's been (look wise, changes for ergonomic ease and such are given): Cadets: Regimented uniform, still Maroon and Gold. Did change from white to cram, but it helps, IMO, make the uniform look more "time worn" to an extent. However, they have always maintained their rights in regards to the uniform style (even with the creme pants) that everyone knew and loved. Troopers: Union soldiers, DM's Uniform is a classic, even with the Saber. Heard they're changing but it might be the same look, but given a modern twist (darker? Lighter? who knows) Pioneer: Yes, they look like a Celtic nightmare, but they've maintained this look for AGES. It's how we establish this corps even if they decided to finally zag away from their Celtic/Irish roots. Who knows, maybe they'll take a new approach to the unform as well. Granted, there's probably more corps that fit this but you have to give these corps (and their directors, no matter HOW we may feel about them) credit for sticking to their guns in terms of Uniform Indentity. Now, in regards to personal thoughts for Uniform Changes from this to next year. Having just seen photos, maybe Madison might make the full return to the "explorer" uniform everyone remembered and loved during their glory days of the past (02 back). Blue Devils, they'll probably ditch the skirt type thing and create something to match the show yet again (Pinstripes with "Dance Derby", etc.) To be honest, I LOVE the current Cavaliers Uniforms. They just seem to symbolize just how bad### they are in whatever they do and it helps maintain a sense of arrogance when you see them going onto OR off of the field. Crossmen... that' a tough one. I liked the 00-03 unis better. Just seemed like the prototypical Dark Horse everyone wanted to see get to the upper echelon with BD, Phantom, Vanguard, etc. However, I would agree that adding a little bit of red to the uniform (the Maltese Cross, for example) would fit many people's eye. I will agree that Crown is quickly becoming "Star, Version 2" but you have to ask why they finally make the full transition. More than likely, the uniforms were getting old and they wanted an overall cleaner and leaner look (unlike the horizontal stripes). Beyond that, I'm indifferent to the uniforms that are currently used. Mandarins, when they get things really rolling, will be just pure awesome. Blue Stars wanted a new look, and it'll be a bit (probably first show next year) before I enjoy them (I bet the kids liked them more though, since I know one of the guys who marched their snare-line. Probably a lot cooler than the dark blue and red many know and love). That's my .02.
  21. I'll be brutally Honest, I'm happy I'm 18th right now. First year back, too much else to worry with, we're aiming for semis.
  22. I just use a standard TAMA snare stand and telescope it until the desired playing height is achieved. You could also try and grab a standard concert snare stand (single or double braced, your choisce) as well and try to Jerry-rig it to accomodate a marching snare as well.
  23. Well, I think the stated heights for the SCV packet is as a general guideline for basic warmups which could change as the show music is written and gets placed on the field in terms of positioning to the front/back, who has the melody, etc. Going to INDOOR though, I'd try to emphasize 9" (mf for the SCV book) as the highest for a while (unless it's WGI and the gyms are better quality) That way you don't get the boomy overtones over the pit book depending on what the impacts and such are.
  24. *PRESS RELEASE TO ALL DCP-I DIRECTORS* BRUNSWICK <AP> After many years away from the competitive field, the Potomac River Knights have returned to DCP-I. Scott Smith, Corps' director, was proud to announce the corps' return to the competitive field. "Today marks a true new chapter to the Potomac River Knights' legacy. The decision to leave the field was not only mine, but the entire stave's' as well. Unfortunately, The Stake Drivers and Caboose will not be returning to the competitive field for the foreseeable future due to lackluster resources. However, that will not deter those corps from being involved in other activities in the coming years." said Mr. Smith in an e-mail to the local papers. The corps has decided on scrapping the uniforms that were created for the last year they were in existence and decided on a darker approach to the field. That being said the DCP-I 11 show is titled: Opus The songs are as follows: American Symphony (or as known as Mr. Holland's Opus)- Glenn Holland Come Sail Away- Styx Stairway to Heaven- Led Zepplin Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen The show will feature portions that seem to convey how an Opus truly is made and what goes into them. Numbers will be stated when they are finalized. *This concludes this press release*
