  1. SCV - They finally have a show that is well paced and achievable. It appeals to audiences and judges alike while also feeding off of the corps history.
  2. Great description. I wish I could have been there. I wouldn't discover DCI until two years later and SCV's Phantom of the Opera, which rocked my world and made me a lifetime fan. But once I saw the '87 videos, those two shows became my favorites of all time!
  3. It is a great classic design which allows the performers to shine....go HNC!
  4. I totally agree with your sentiments. I think Gail would be very proud. Go SCV! What a year. SCV reasserting themselves with Appalachian Spring. Cadets with West Side Story. BD with a classic jazz show. Its like we are in the 80's all over again. Such a pleasure.
  5. The volunteers work so hard, and are a huge part of the corps success. Have a great experience! I know when I marched, you guys kept us healthy and full when our bodies were so worn down. Thanks!
  6. I agree with you. IMO they won based completely on their opener which was amazing, but talk about an unbalanced show that totally dropped off in intensity after the opener. All I remember about the ending was the return of the angel wing flags. It was their anniversary though, and one time Finals have been in CA, so dare I say politics were a slight factor. Of course, the controversy over Cadets show was the rationalization to some degree also. It was an interesting result.
  7. I loved '99 definitely underrated IMHO... Will never forget the ballad. Congrats on Rookie of the year.
  8. Wow! Can we say build excitement for the first big regional. I'm just sayin, but I love it! Blue Stars over Phantom - Really!?!? - Very interesting.
  9. I see the recaps on dci.org have changed, and the music ensemble judge has been changed from Starnes to Chuck King. My apologies to David Starnes.
  10. It seems David Starnes made a strong statement looking at the recaps... For some reason he was juding both Music GE and Music ensemble. While every other judge had a .1 spread between Crown and HNC, he had a .2 spread in 'both' captions that he judged...odd. How was one judge responsible for two captions??
  11. I think this is truly a toss-up I just hope the illnesses don't affect Crown's performance, and that they are back to 100%. My best guess is Crown by .50
  12. I like the corps banners that many people here on DCP have at the bottom of their posts, but can't figure out a way to add them to my profile. I tried saving the jpgs and adding them to my signature, but couldn't get that to work.... any suggestions? Thanks!
  13. To me a good way to look at it is last night, HNC got a 85.55 in FL, and Bluecoats received a 84.95 in KS. Having watched both corps on the FN several times at shows on close to the same dates (late last week/last weekend), I think that spread would be much larger if they were competing at the same show. I agree with others that SA will give us the true 'normalized' picture, and the alignment that will drive the remainder of the sesaon. This is not meant as an anti Bluecoats statement, I like their show, just feel that there is definitely more than a .60 spread there in the eyes on any judge.
  14. I am just really happy that two East Coast corps seem to be the cream of the crop this year. (of course BD is up there as well) Go Crown and Cadets!
  15. Irving, This is Anthony from DC. We went to see the Fan Favorites theater show a few years ago in Fairfax. Great to see you are volunteering for Cadets! I love their show this year, and reiterate what others are saying, that it is very refreshing to see positive posts and comments about their efforts. Hope to see you at a show this year! -- Anthony
  16. I haven't read anything officially from the corps saying it was based on the Wizard of Oz. There have been topics on here about the show concept. Those just mentioned that it was a group of Fairy Tale Characters going to an alternate reality similar to Cadets 05. I do wonder why they choose to outfit the guard in variations on Fairy Tale characters?
  17. After watching Crown several times On Demand, it seems like the basis for the concept is the general Wizard of Oz story. They start out in the 'Heartland' i.e. Kansas playing the Promise of Living. The drill then has a tornado like effect that 'spins' them out into an alternate reality for Sensemaya. They then long for home in the Somewhere over the Rainbow/Somewhere amalgamation, and finally are spun out again into the Tenderland reprise. I LOVE this show, and could easily see it winning the Title this year. I also love the Cadets show, Crown just seems more 'modern' and dare I say 'innovative'...
  18. There wasn't a Z-Pull in the 2000 show as far as I remember!?!?
  19. After watching the HNC show this year, I must say that I have great appreciation for the music and drill. That being said, I feel that the guard uniforms leave something to be desired. I realize they are going for a retro/traditional look for the anniversary, but given the cream color, the guard just blends into the corps proper. I love the Cadets, and I am an alumnus, but I feel they really should change the guard uniforms. Anthony Cadets 93-95
  20. Overall all winner tonight across DCI, IMHO is Crown. There score and Cadets fit nicely in the overall 3rd and 4th slots after seeing these #'s. Yeah, yeah we shouldn't compare across shows, LOL. Tonight, I think we can. Bravo Crown! and great show BD!
  21. Jazz Running is still marching in my book. Also, I should point out that I am not opposed to BD or Cavie's 'running' as it has/does contribute to their programs. My point is to address why the Cadets unorthodox programming is such a lightening rod, whereas, other Corps seem to not be maligned at all for 'non-traditional' design. Just food for thought.....
