  1. Dutch Boy has been to some crappy shows / areas. 1. - 1984 Atlanta - we were actually chained into the gym at night for sleeping and had armed police guards stand watch all night. We came back to the school after competing and were told that we were switching schools ASAP and they crammed us into a housing facility with 2 other corps/ 2. - 1987 or 1988 can't remember which year - Birmingham, Alabama - females were not permitted to go anywhere without a male escort after we performed - Our director made the entire corps wait for the guard while we wrapped and sorted our equipment so they march us back to the equipment truck.
  2. I don't think that is Dutch Boy. In 1991 the corps wore white jackets. The photo looks like red.
  3. that's cool! I'll take it as a compliment then. It's all good. Thank you for the apology.
  4. "Skank"??? I don't think we looked skanky but each to their own. Even if we did look skanky we sure could spin. Dutch has quite a few guard trophy's from 1988 forward to back it up. We actually beat quite a number of guards from higher placed corps. As long as skanky is remembered along with talented and clean, I guess I'm okay with that but could we find a better term to describe us?
  5. Absolutely!!! Yes Canada does get hot contrary to popular belief. Let me also state that I was one of the Canadian Dutch Boy kids that passed out after the Altanta show in 1987. While true, we passed out due to the heat. It was NOT because we aren't use to heat. The majority of us that passed out were members of the colour guard. We passed out because the show was greatly delayed and we were made to wait by the gate for half an hour covered in our big huge black capes lined with red satin. We had NO AIR as we were not allowed to open our capes to stay cool so that the audience did not get a peek at our bodysuits before the big reveal. That year our openner was 4 and 1/2 minutes long and was 206 beats per minute. If you would like to listen go to the dutch boy MP3 area and have a listen.
  6. yeah I marched with all 4 of those guys. They are all great guys. Still see Lee and Scott regularly.
  7. Wow, interesting to note that half of the 89 Cadets snare line were former members of Dutch Boy. (Lee, Scott, Doug and who was the 4th?).
  8. Alvin Ailey is also what I remember but I didn't want to say the dance company and be wrong.
  9. His name was Wes and if my memory serves he was a professional dancer.
  10. Dutch Boy...what a horn line! Brent Montgomery did the best he had with the talent in the drum line, and did a superb job....a fun show to watch! I believe most of the Cadets snare line from 89 (Definitely) and 90 were prior snare drumers from Dutch Boy... Lee and Scott had also marched in Dutch Boy. Dutch Boy always produced great horn lines and colour guards but for some strange reason could never produce a great drum line despite having some of the most individually talented drummers in the activity on all sections of the battery. Can a drummer please explain this phenomenon to me? I'm not being sarcastic or anything and I'm not trying to cut down the Dutch Boy drum lines. I truthfully just know nothing about drumming and have always wondered why this happened to us. Thanks for any input you can give.
  11. All the corps in 12th to 15th place were awesome in 1988. We all came to play and play we did. I imagine that any of the corps in 12th to 15th would have made finals any other year. Everyone is still so shocked at what happened at finals that year that the amazing battle for 12th gets overlooked. ( I absolutely loved BD that year and incidentally I really like Star) Newseditor, if you were one of the people that gave me a hug on Saturday night I'd like to thank you. It was much needed and well appreciated. By the way, I loved your show. No offence to Sky Ryders but we didn't expected them to be our fight for 12th spot based on what the prior scores were in 88 as you had pointed out above. We truly believed it would either be you guys or Crossman to beat us for 12th and then when we heard the announcer say Freelancers were 15th and Crossmen were 14th were ready to celebrate. We just didn't expect to hear our name announced in 13th. I can admit that despite my foul mood on Saturday night I really did enjoy Sky Ryders show.
  12. Hi Mike, Long time no talk! I hope you are doing well. Email me if you have time. Neddy
  13. Hey there SkyRyderFMM - I would so have loved a tie!! We should have both performed on Saturday night! I'm so glad to hear you liked our show. I have it on VHS and I still love to watch it. Your show looked like a lot of fun to perform. Lots of entertainment value. Bradrick - if you would like to hear Dutch Boy almost any year go to Dutch Boy. Go to the media section and then click on the MP3s.
  14. Thanks for the kind words. I thought we were great as well but of course I'm completely biased. Finals week was really scary for us. We had not competed against Sky Ryders, Crossman, Freelancers or Florida Wave all year long but we knew our pre finals week scores were on par if not higher than all those corps heading into finals week. We had beaten Suncoast Sound quite a number of times in the early season and had kept quite close in scores to them all season long. And we all know Suncoast ended in 10th. Some nights Suncoast beat us - some nights we beat them. Some nights there were many points separating us and some nights tenths of a point. I'm not sure that the judging community really knew what to do with us or Suncoast that year. We rehearsed non stop that year. The staff pulled pretty much all our scheduled free days (including laundry days) after we beat Suncoast trying to solidify as spot on Saturday night. They felt we had a real shot at finals and wanted to make sure we couldn't be denied a spot. We rehearsed after coming of the field from performing at a show and then again after retreat. We were usually the last corps to pull out of the lot because we were still rehearsing. I think all the rehearsing made not making finals even harder. Al DiCroce (corps director)used to give us a speech telling us not to blame others for our failures but to look in the mirror first and see what we could have done differently. Friday night we looked at ourselves in the mirror and we knew we couldn't have done anything different to make finals. It hurt falling just short after all the work. Almost 20 years later I take consolation in hearing repeatedly that Dutch Boy 88 was one of the greatest shows to ever hit the field and not make finals. (I still would have liked to perform Saturday night but I did enjoy watching some incredible shows)
  15. 88 was a great year overall. A very emotional year for Dutch Boy members - we worked so hard that year and had a great corps/ show, only to end up sitting and watching finals from the stands on Saturday night. It was very difficult to watch corps perform that you had beaten several times during the season. Oh well. Still a great year. Don't regret a minute. We did win best colour guard at DCI semi finals. I don't know if DCI had ever presented that award before for corps 13 to 25 or if they ever gave it again following 1988 but we did win best guard at semis. That was cool. I'll never forget the tears we all cried together in the stands on Friday night and in the parking lot in Kansas after the scores were announced after semis. I must say that many other corps were so classy that night consoling us and congratulating us a fine show and year and reminding us to be proud. 13th by 2 tenths was still something to be proud of. Maybe it was no coincidence that we played " It was a very good year"!.
  16. 1991 Dutch Boy - City of Angels. - Guard rocked!
  17. Thank you Flashofthunder for displaying so much respect and integrity. You are great representative for your corps and your generation. You should be proud. My comment about respect was never meant to be directed at any specific age group but to all posters in general. I have seen some excellent posts from all ages and some extremely negative/rude posts from all ages. Whether you agree with the direction the activity is possibly headed or not, the fundementals will always remain unchanged. Hard work, loyalty, dedication, team work for the greater cause, respect, sense of family, and self growth will all still remain the most important part of the activity. ... woodwinds or not. I did not march 7 years just to win a medal. I marched for the pure love of the activity. How it enhanced my life. I have said it before and I'll say it again. I would not be pleased if woodwinds were to become a part of the activity but I can't imagine completely shutting off a part of my life that IS still so much a part of who I am. I consider the activity to be like family, I may not always agree with them but they are still my family for better or for worse and I will try to support them.
  18. I love the activity but I will admit I do not wish to see woodwinds on the field. I'm not sure I would completely pull my support of the activity because of what the activity provided me personally beyond the performance and instruction. Drum corps is an activity that teaches all those involved about respect. Respect for oneself, respect for others , respect for your corps and for other corps. When reading the posts on DCP I'm not sure if I always see the respect most of us should have learned from being involved in the activity. I wonder if we could try to be more diplomatic when disagreeing with other poster's opinions rather than attacking the individual. Everyone has feelings and opinions whether you agree with them or not. Sorry to sound preachy. Just a thought.
  19. Is that a Canadian accent joke?? hmmm?? You know oot and aboot? b**bs I have a friend that marched Cavies for years ( I believe you know him) and he likes to make fun of the way we talk. He still makes fun of me on a regular basis, but not always because of my accent! b**bs . Don't know who the corps is either. Sorry
