  1. Bump. What's up DDay? CNY is a blast and everyone is invited...check it out if u can -Tap.
  2. my mistake...."Nerrrr....." you'll hav 2 excuse me...I get them mixed up. thk u for correcting that ....here's the show then... Blend WWII/Vietnam into a Military tribute...Zimmer, Adagio for Strings (Platoon) and Miss Saigon...I like the idea of "unused" selections from Carmen....PDQ Bach may be over a lot of people's heads but I found the comment hysterical AND a good idea.
  3. I can confirm that. Played it alongside them on tour...there was a common arr. going around and most of the corps had it in the 90s. In addition to my "show," I had The Liberty Bell March, Salvation, You'll Never Walk Alone, Clowns, One More Time, La Fiesta, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, The Star Spangled Banner (solo and ens. arr.), Concierto de Aranjuez, all bugle calls and America/O'Canada memorized ...locked n loaded to bust out at anytime, w/ the exception of the Maynard/FutureCorps stuff, knowing the above charts was NOT optional.
  4. We played a great arr. of "Salvation is Created" by Greg Flores at VK. it was in D (relative) minor....transposing from G-treble to concert...the arr. was in Amin. It was haunting and beautiful. Garfield had almost the same arr. at the time. I can affirm that God/Religion/etc. was never invoked or discussed when we played it...it was functionally a warm-up etude to dial in pitch, voicing, and ens. balance. I can also affirm that though it was presented in a secular way, when we played it...it was BEYOND spiritual. Salvation WAS created....this writer is a pure skeptic and scientist btw...just to give u an idea of what it takes to move that part of me...call it the soul...call it what you want...it's Metaphysical in nature and that composition taps into it. Most music composed over the last 1,000 yrs was intended to glorify an infinite consciousness; something (a power) greater than ourselves (we can prove these things exist...ever been trashed by an 8-foot wave?...fallen in love? ...need I go on?....), or a leader who was being praised as one, so what shall we do? Throwout Brahms, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven....just smear concrete right over the best music ever written cuz it ain't secular? f--- that!
  5. I would not have sold those....they are serious collectors items...fun as heck to play too! I have a 1991 3v G Kanstul Lead Bar. Bugle with "tune any note" kicker designed by Jack Meehan and built/refurbished by Zig himself. ---I marched DCI and DCA w/ that horn. ....I have a 3v G Kanstul Custom Class Mellophone of equivalent functionality, design and elegance... ....they can be pried from my cold, dead hands or found in the Smithsonian, who will inherit all my historic collectible items if I don't leave an heir behind. I hope you got a good price. I just can't put a price-tag on my G Bugles, I understand selling them and I'm not criticizing the sales...I just don't have it in me to part w/ them. Too much sentiment and personal history resides between the silver and brass. ***edit: let's pretend I could, or had to: Kanstul Bar. in G: $499,000 FIRM Kanstul Mello in G: $299,000 negotiable Getzen 1050 Jazz tbn in Bb: $399,000 poss. negotiable.
  6. "The Pacific," by Hans Zimmer, could be combined with "band of brothers," and other WWII compositions to make one helluvan' entertaining tearjerker if pulled off by a div1 corps. Perhaps a Zimmer-themed show - lots to choose from. "Road to Perdition," "White Oleander," ..."American Beauty." being biased as I am...Team Red or Blue would pull it off best, but Rockford, Garfield, Rosemont, Crossmen, Boston, the Cops, Madison and now Crown are =lly qualified. A Sample. The Band of Brothers Theme was tackled yrs ago by several corps and arr. are public avail online...The Pacific (I'm sure it already exists but I could knock out a hornline arr. in a matter of days...cake!) A WWII/Music of Zimmer themed show would knock 'em dead.
  7. check out the new media hub: http://tapper7.com/from-the-vault-rare-tracks/ the pswd is "ist___th__" alllowercase, threesimplewords, gotit?

  8. I'm bumping this because someone swiped my VK Jacket at a bus stop last summer...I've nearly come to accept that it's gone and if you know how I might come across a decent embroidery shop that can make something close enough for horseshoes 'n hand-grenades...I MIGHT be interested in what you've got. That said, I'm both an alumni .......WHATTUP VEEKAY????----AND a self-promoting w----. even STILL... you have 5 posts, we have no idea who you are and you're tiptoeing the line of pseudospam right into straight up spam-spam....if you tell us who you are and where you marched (or who/what you are a fan of) you'll get more recognition, traffic and trust on this forum. THAT said...use your old-school DCP street cred to access my new multimedia hub...I'm hosting some rare tracks that will grow and spiral out into into something greater as Tapcast begins to take form...it's password protected, but you can figure it out. An absurd 3-word phrase, alllowercasenospaces, 10 chars "ist__pth__" Lot's of public-fun to be had as well if that was over your head. n00bs and the confused can scout the command post. Much love from yer ol' pal Tapper.
  9. Not too much of it is drum corps yet, but I've begun hosting some extremely rare tracks ....if you play a G Bugle you'll appreciate most if not all of what I've posted so far....I usually host music temporarily and add links/suggestions that my readers/listeners download the music via iTunes or Amazon if they enjoyed the track and that they support the corps/band/ensemble by any means possible, but some of this stuff... ...the people and the groups are long gone...little or none of it is digitized.... ...so these tracks can be: a)published by me -OR- b)not at all...it can just sit on an old 50GB hard drive waiting to rot c)where would the $ go? to whom? d)Some of it is the intellectual property of yours truly.... so what to do? I password protected it. the password verifies that you've been around this forum a long time ...and that you'll appreciate the rare music I'm hosting, posting and compiling. threewords. alllowercasenospaces. 10 chars total: "ist___pt__m" got it? The Vault at Tapper7.com - more rare tracks coming soon. if you haven't been around that long...PM me your credentials and ill send the pswd....(cmon though...it's pretty obvious) n00bs there is lots of drum corps history, links and music for you to enjoy on the public side of Tapper7.com - and (as always) more coming soon. &heart -Tapper
  10. 1. Is a li'l b4 my time but...2? That was a blast... we had like 100 horns ALL IN G - the line was Wall-to-Wall West Coast Drum Corps Ringers. Santa Clara, Concord, Sacramento and BOTH Anaheims were well-represented. We opened with Folk-Song Suite which is a barn-burner...A legit Color-Presentation with full Honor Guard had not been done in a looooooong time....and the crowd recognized us for it. That open C major chord at the end reminded EVERYONE that G Bugles simply can't ever be replaced entirely. Decibels and frequency don't lie. When those open (concert) C major, Gmaj and Amaj chords lock-in at w/ a full clip...there's simply no other sound like it. Here's a sample. Crank it! Features Phil on Sop and CARL on Barry.
  11. Rich Skare's Mom gave me permission to publish a great pic of him in full BD dress w/ his Meehaphone, which is the featured photo above another one I was graciously granted permission to publish of Gail Royer and Jerry Seawright together. Those classic/historical pics available now: http://tapper7.com/christmas-day-and-the-classic-pics-i-promised/ Check out the main page too...I posted some classic pics with w/ Pooh Bear and Bill Watrous. More on the way too. Scope it out...."I link to them." "Nerrrrrr......." Much love for the holidays and God bless your families. Thx for all the support DCP gives to my dumb Web site btw. It means more than I could ever express in mere prose. here's a bonus pic; from the Tapper7 archives....1997 Santa Clara Big Bores at Final Retreat. Seen with our Guru Dean Westman Resident Legit-Pro In-Residence Jeb (Houston Symphony, 1st tbn. 1989 Bar. Soloist-"Music of the Night") Horn Sgt/soloist/supervet Eric "Dark" Hand and The Consummate Professional, Adam Jennicka is pictured. This writer is pictured to Dean's immediate left-taking a knee.
  12. There is no diff. A G Bugle is a minor 3rd LOWER than it's corresponding Bb horn. Whatever you are capable of on ur Mello in F is going to be the same in G. actually you may lose 1 partial moving to a G Bugle Mellophone from one in F as G is a major 2nd higher. I think your brain will auto-"make up for that" and set you up for that extra partial in the upper register. Going from a Bb horn to a G bugle is MUCH easier and how most of us progressed in the era you speak of. We just had to retrain our ears ... (If you hear a concert Bb in your head when you see it on the page, not knowing that a G is what comes out is an auto-frack...dissonance between your head/buzz/the actual sound. It's like shifting gears, but mentally, FROM Bb TO G. So when I play a "C" on a G Bugle...it's a concert G. Likewise when I play a "C" on Bb earthworm-shooter, it's a concert Bb. It feels like I can play higher on a G Bugle because it's A LOWER NOTE COMING OUT THAN WHAT IS WRITTEN, though usually played on the same partial, requiring the equivalence in AIR and BUZZ. The "easy-feeling" only matters in the upper-register, when partials begin to collapse closer. The E above high C is UGFL on most brass instruments, on a G Bugle, it's only a half-step above a high (concert) C. A talented 6th grader could paste that - loud AND in-tune, why not right? Take a "double G" That's a concert D played on the "double-G" partial, so it sounds higher and more bad-###, even though it's just a 3rd above a (concert) high-C. To transpose: Know where you're going from/to. I often transpose music I like for G Bugles....so I start by figuring out the concert pitches. Say the 1st note is a concert D. In C Treble, that's the middle line=B (E-G-B-D-F), right? In Bb Treble for G Bugle, it's written on the 2nd line: a "G." In bass clef, the first note (if we 8vb) is written on the 4th line "F" - the SAME NOTE would be 2 lines above the staff. G bugles make the keys of Cmaj, Cmin, Amaj, Amin9, F#Maj/min, F7, Fmaj/min and obviously all G scales and chords especially accessible. (C major is the concert Eb or "F" scale...the "mostly 1 and open scale"...they were designed that way because C and G...sonically carry much farther, making them of great use for military communications before amplitude and frequency modulation). On a hot, humid, summer day in Kansas I could here Garfield going thru their show, vaguely, like a tinny radio was playing softly. At the show some of my buds came up and said "We could here you guys (SCV) today" When I said I could hear them too we checked a map. campsites were 7 miles apart. Bb sure is "more musical," but scientifically, a G-line is louder-my main issue with drum corps in Bb. sorry im going OT. To transpose my concert D (the G on my G Bugle) for a horn in F. ... Logically, an F horn's Treble clef Cmaj scale emulates an Fmaj scale, so D is the 6th, "A" is the 6th of Cmaj so the 2nd space up (F-A-C-E). Therefore we transpose UP a major 6th. Consider using Audition if it sounds like I'm speaking a Swahili dialect.
  13. 'sup n00b? on most forums you'd get your face smashed, but here on DCP...n00bs.... we go ez on 'em. Thank you for the kind words about Santa Clara. The most important thing for a n00b to know is that if you are an active or fmr. member of a divI/II or Sr. Corps, you may constructively criticise them in a well-thought out critique that is verifiable, but openly bashing another corps is considered out-of-bounds here. Shy away from flame-bait and flame wars, there plenty of other sites for that. I would say that throwing DCI, DCA or any other circuit under the bus be done elsewhere, but I'm no mod or admin or editor. Don't encourage marching members to "hit" a judge or make jokes about it-at all. It is dishonorable to allow it to happen by mistake and shameful to be proud of it --> Awful and a "bus ticket home," if ever done with intent or malice. Realize that the fans are the most important part of drum corps. Consider the integral part the fans play in your posts. Always consider them in your practicing and rehearsals and perform FOR them at every show. Please behave with honor, integrity, purity, courage and perseverance. Amplify that 100-fold when you are practicing/performing on the field-of-honor. Please do not spit, sit or swear on the field of honor. Follow the chain-of-command. Don't let anyone break-ranks. ever. not even in MB. Memorize: The Liberty Bell March, The Star Spangled Banner, Revele, Taps, The Flag-raising, Bugler's Holiday, You'll Never Walk Alone, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, One More Time, C-tuning, G-Tuning, F (thumbs up)-tuning, Clark Studies in F,G,Ab, A,B,C and D. Krypton. Salvation is Created, America/O' Canada and Send in the Clowns. Make "drum corps" friends. They are the best people in the world. They will pick you up when u get knocked down. They will forgive your worst mistakes if you are honest, if you are sorry and make amends. They will teach you if you are willing to learn. They will watch your back and show you your front if u fail to notice it. Much of them transcend friendship. They've been upgraded to family, many of them long ago. Welcome
  14. Under the Saturday Night Lights, Finals Night '97. The last show. just a fraction of a moment to express a great volume of emotion and shared experience. The goal is to peak at finals and give everything away to the audience. I did. The corps did. The audience felt it. I could explain more in 10 minutes of music than a compendium of anecdotes.* Eric Hand and Matt Carroll are featured both gave historic solos. There is a point where only the show can tell you what I can't put into words. There facts and stories and legends.... fortunately there is a recording. DCI and PBS always do a great job with that. Reliable Rondo hosts. Garfield's "Celebration: The Music of Philip Spark" is outstanding. The Blue Devils were phenomenal as always. Brian Kettlehut is a good friend; he introduced me to drum corps, he's featured as an upper-lead/soloist. ...and Sean Billings ... pastes a doubleC. Mike Boo gave a thoughtful and kind review as well---- http://www.dci.org/news/view.cfm?news_id=a1f8ce72-6eed-471a-bd02-01e1971ef6c0 *I really liked Crossmen's rendition of Birdland and they closed with the Don Ellis Classic "Niner-Two"-I'm a huge fan of that show.
  15. Thx for posting I'll be checking back...no worries if it's not about drum corps. Historical documents about Gail - or written by Gail are relevant to all readers.
  16. John and Tim are the sop soloists in 89's "Ya Gotta Try" http://youtu.be/xoghJMPnCkU John's featured soloist role set the stage for power-houses like Scott Steward, Roland Garceau and Sean Billings ....Tim's solo in Fiddler - '92 Santa Clara ....SO SWEET! You just don't hear that kind of style anymore ... Everything a west-coast hornline did from the 80s till.. today is heavily or indirectly related to Jack's program. My Kanstul has the marks on the tuning slides, in measured increments on the main slide (plus the tune-any-note kicker)...Jack's tuning-system may not be in use too much but we used it at VK. John was a consultant in 04. I'm honored to have stood in a line led by him. This clip has....like half-a-million views. John Meehan...in control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EDIDCdy5Es "Through The Years" is one my favorite CDs," it includes some of favorites like Evita, Tenderland, Russian Xmas, Phantom, Carmen, Miss Saigon and Tim's solo I mentioned from Fiddler: https://store.scvanguard.org/cds/ Concord has a nice service for streaming , downloading or ordering shows and tracks: http://bluedevils.org/mediabox/index.php?module=audio&season=1989&tagID=0&assetID=10866 Great topic...btw
  17. Thanks to everyone for visiting my web site www.tapper7.com ill be back soon!

  18. Thank you for the kind words and Web hits. It's a pleasure to cook. Period. Cooking for Santa Clara - Transcendent in honor, humility and fun. Wanted to drop everything and just volunteer for the rest of the tour but...life. Maybe next year.
  19. Thank you so much for reading it! I set up Google Analytics on the site and since I posted the review, I got 200 hits JUST from DCP. FB threw in a few hundred and we just received new readers from Mexico, Brazil, Russia and Indonesia...most are Brazilian! My readers are the most important people to me so thank you RockEuph and thank you DCP. Now that's what I call Drum Corps International!
  20. My brief review of the Citrus College show is posted. http://tapper7.com/socal-drum-corps-weekend/ Thanks to fellow alumni, friends, supporters. Everyone who showed up. Much love Xmas Tree, Tapper aka "Cud"
  21. My brief review of BD's performance at Citrus College is posted. http://tapper7.com/socal-drum-corps-weekend/ "They're always ready" Much love, Tapper.
  22. I would look it up but there is no need. Randy (skajerk) is a trustworthy source. Thanks for doing that research- it confirms the accuracy of " overwhelming" which is subjective, but 85 percent is overwhelming in my book. He also posted who voted no-implying who voted yes. The rule change and who voted yes are both disappointing to me. However, the opinion of 20 directors should be taken with a grain of salt the same way you take a number from a group of guys in green shirts... I firmly disagree and am confident that my rejection of French horns, sousaphones et al is widely supported and agreed with, possibly with an overall majority counting all performers past, present and fans. Or not. This is a sensitive subject and I respect everyone who posted here so far, this seems like a thread that would normally devolve into personal attacks and the mods would lock it up tight. Instead I read intelligent, competent discussion. Rare on the Internet, but that's because we share common ground. Most drum corps people are expert musicians, highly educated, outgoing and open minded. We are opinionated and egotistical, but not judgmental. We are thinkers. I think this rule change sucks. I read a great point, in 2000, not being able to sell 66 horns and having to locate cash for 66 new ones probably hurt several corps... (a matched set from Kanstul is 50k? maybe 70k now?) At the end of the day, Im deeply nostalgic about drum corps from the 80s and 90s, I still listen to at least one of those shows everyday. Last night I was all about 96 Cadets, BD and PR 96 are on my all time favorite list. I'm full bore conservative about this: change is bad. The last time I saw a live show that i honestly felt was bad ### and quickly added to my playlist was 2004 Cavaliers... Don't even really like 007 music that much, but they MADE it cool... It rocked and even made me a feel better about Bb... That was the last time I felt it. Really felt it, I can't put it into words you know what IT is. It's something magical that just seems to be drifting, in flux, Im just hoping IT comes back. I've seen great shows since then, amazing shows... I even confess that even though I took a beating for not liking 2013 Crown as much as everyone else... It grew on me. I love to see a corps come up like that over time and get rings... But you won't find it on my iPod, or any show from the last decade. Something has been missing from drum corps for a long time. I wish I had the words to explain.
  23. Btw, Truman and Barigirl78 sum it up nicely. ...And Nice to see your post Randy! (SkaJerk) what up playa?
