The Cadets at Quarterfinals

Simple fact - DCI dropped the ball on this.

When making the determination for the location of the 2007 World Championship, assurances should have been made as to ensure the best condition of the field. Was this done? I have to also ask if DCI had checked out the field prior to Finals Week. Obviously not. The problems with the field should have been addressed.

I am also concerned that for at least the second time in its history, DCI reversed a signifigant penalty during the Championships that will possibly play into how Finals ends up. What is the point of having rules and regulations if they are not going to be enforced? Yes, the field was terrible, yet 15 other corps had gone on that field. While Hopkins is concerned about his members, he should have realized that his corps would be penalized for not going on time (in some ways he is lucky that the judges did not DQ the Cadets). Once was bad enough, but now there is a precident that I think will bite back at DCI

I think that there needs to be some serious discussion at the DCI Winter Meetings. Forget about any debate about woodwinds or electronics. I think DCI needs to step back and take a good long look at itself. The whole reason DCI (or the Combine as it was called) was created to address the problems that resulted from AL/VFW days. DCI has apparantely become the very thing it was trying to fight. DCI needs to make sure that the season is fair for ALL corps involved.

Whether you agree or disagree with what happen at Quarterfinals, it simply should have never gotten to this point.

Fair move by DCI, IMO. I think the hypersensitivity toward DCI being on top of things is a bit overdone but we all need to ##### about something, apparently. I'd like to ##### about the judges dumping the Troopers score nearly 5 points at Denver and 3 at QFinals, but I'm told I shouldn't blame the judges or DCI for that. And I'm sure Troopers were not the only victims of scoring inconsistency.

just to show I'm not exaggerating:

7/26/07

78.3

7/28/07

73.575

8/05/07

80.6

QFinals

77.55

The reason I bring this up is that both issues have to do with positioning during finals week. Due to the way OTL times were decided, Troopers were slotted to go on in 21st, but their "real" ranking before the OTL determination was 18th. Does this affect how they were scored at QFinals? Sure hard not to see it that way. Before anyone goes ballistic on me for complaining, I'd like to say that I know there's a lot more error in the lower tier and therefore it's harder to nail down the box score on the sheets. I'm very aware of that issue, having dealt with it in person before. But really, 5 points worth of score latitude at a major regional?!?

However, in the case of the top tier the most recent scores would be well known and studied, and they would never get dumped more than a point, maybe 1.5, except by a penalty. (which in this case was fairly withdrawn, as I said)

This bizarre scoring latitude habit is what I want DCI to examine. Now, my personal dream is that next year the Troopers will improve the quality of their product enough to make it obvious that they should have a spot on Friday. (heck, I'd take Saturday too, 50th Anniversary and all :) ) But there will always be corps in the lower tier, and they will have to live with this problem until it's dealt with by DCI.

So to review: Hash mark repainting issue? Got dealt with and everything's ok for this week, and hopefully next year it won't be any kind of issue because it's easily fixed. Point slams? Still a problem, and no evidence yet that it's going to stop for next year.

i understand according to the judges.. but i disagree with the judges.

Do you and your former corps a favor and think before you type. Obviously you are a homer and fmm. We get it, but no need to bash another corps to make yours look better; its not working anyway. The Cadets have for the most part outdone the Cavies and will continue to do so tonight and Saturday. Enjoy!

Yes, it should have stayed. They broke the rules, they get penalized. End of story. (Regardless of the negligence of the field crew...Cavies did just fine with no hash marks).

The Cavies could have asked for hashes to be painted as well, and they did not. Evidently, DCI feels fine with what has been done.

Actually according to the official score sheet, Cadets & Cavies pretty much split the visual aspect tonight...with or without the penalty.

Cavies - vis performance, vis effect, guard

Cadets - vis ensemble

3 to 1 is no split.

Mr. Hopkins ASKED a JUDGE if he could leave the field and have the hashmarks repinated. The JUDGE said YES!

As far as the Cavies doing fine on the field without hasmarks, since Cavies are known for their marching, whose to say with all the awesome marching the Cavies didn't remove the hashmarks. Sure, they were there when the Cavies took the field. Were they there after the cavies left?

By no means am I blaming the Cavies, I'm just saying. The Cavies march all over the field. Just because the hashmarks were there when the Cavies TOOK the field doesn't mean they were there AFTER the Cavies left the field.

The Cavaliers may be known for their marching, but not this year. They were filthy.

NO! The field was below standard for the corps taking the field.

If there were some huge sink hole, should they have still marched?

Thats a little abrasive there, I however say "no" due to the fact that the field had not been re-hashed during I N T's encore performance :P However, even if they would kept the penalty, If I am the Cadets, Its only Quarterfinals I tell my corps to concentrate on the next performance.
