So why didn't Crown win?

Recommended Posts

The ironic thing, Brasso, is their drumline is better than the 2013 line by miles. It's just SCV, BD, Bloo, and the Cadets were just plain SICK! Hard to overcome that level of greatness.

The top 4 drumlines are absolutely incredible every year. That's what DCI drumlines are, so even if crown's line does get better, the other four lines that you named are going to get better and be just as good. I don't see crown's percussion scoring higher than those four next year, no matter how improved Crown's line is from their championship year, or even this past year.

Crown was spectacular in 2007.

That should have certainly medaled that year.

Agreed Crown was spectacular that year. But I am curious as to who you think should have kicked out of the top three so Crown could get in.

if you're going to tell us you can pick out four hundredths of difference from one corps to another, you just let everyone know you're sillier than a Cesario catch phrase.

To be blunt, it's pretty easy to do when looking at scores for what they really all: the culmination of several judges' opinions on many different captions. Crown obviously had substantial deficiencies in visual and percussion to Blue Devils, and that easily set BD above Crown, even if only by a slim margin

VERY, very true: especially considering that developing a Championship-caliber percussion program takes time. Overhauling staff and designers completely would lead to at least some sort of adjustment period with vets learning the new technique/approach & rookies learning to adjust to the overall corps rehearsal/culture.

HOWEVER...

I think it is fair to speculate on how Crown can close the gap a bit between 4th & 1st.

For example, in 2011 Cadets won DCI with a 3rd place drumline but the spread between Cadets & 1st place Cavaliers was .4; in judging philosophy, that averages to .2 in each sub-caption was is pretty much "ballpark/neighborhood" with Cavaliers being slightly better that night. BD was 2nd in drums (and overall, meaning Cadets next-closest competitor), and Cadets were only .2 behind BD in percussion. That very close spread gave the corps a little bit of wiggle-room which they were able to make up in Effect.

Another interesting example is 2006 when Cavaliers won their most-recent Championship. They had a .7 spread in Percussion behind #1 BD, a caption Cavaliers "struggled" with all season long. Cavaliers were able to win because of the way caption placements/strengths were fairly equally distributed that year:

* Cavaliers were strong in Effect, particularly music (though I LOVED their vis. program that year). In overall Effect they tied for 1st with Phantom

* Cavaliers were STRONG visually, winning overall Visual sheets where Phantom was 3rd behind Cavaliers by almost .5 and BD were 2nd with only a .3 spread behind Cavaliers.

* Phantom was strong musically, winning percussion handily while Cavaliers won brass & ensemble. Phantom & Cavaliers tied musically.

With Phantom having a visual "weakness" and Cavaliers having a percussion "weakness," both corps were (kind of) helped by BD having

strong brass & guard. Cavaliers benefit because Phantom's weakness 'evened out' Cavaliers' percussion weakness which tipped the scores in Cavaliers' favor. Phantom's effect & music strengths tipped the scores in their favor over BD.

The "easiest" way to win is to be very strong in all captions, with no weaknesses. Obviously that was BD in 2014. When you have a weak caption you roll the dice trying to overcome it with other captions/strengths. This year Crown got unlucky and BD crept up on them in the end; in 2013 Crown got "lucky" and they were able to hold of BD by holding strong in vis, effect & brass.

Regardless, this year was REALLY exciting to follow scores/placements

BD snare line is all 19 year olds. Only two aged out.

That kid who won the snare individual Gold Medal (Brandon) is only going to be 17 next year.
