Cop
I'm streaming Suncoast 85 now from DCI~ Oh, I forgot about the ode to Orlando "When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are........" And the Art Deco drill forms ala Miami Beach.... Edited January 20, 2008 by Cop
Imafrayedknot
Just wanted to share, have no idea why... was doing some old school this morning, and clicked on Suncoast 1985. Midnight in Miami, you know what I'm talking about... 23 years later, "The Lick" still takes my breath away. Couldn't help but get hyped.Take it to the beach, Suncoast! This post caused my craving to watch The 1985 Legacy Collection. I'll never claim to be an expert, but the bass drum line is on fire the latter portion of the show. Does anybody concur??? Wildabeast
Yes. The first time an entire show was written specifically for a corps. Robert W. Smith, baby!
SkyRyder_FMM
Robert W. Smith, baby! I have to say, Robert Smith's arrangements for Suncoast during the 80's were flat out amazing - some of the best writting out there. Man do I miss Suncoast. Fievel
All i have to say is go Basses Exposure and notes WAY before their time!!! I think that was my first time to their website. The history was sad to read. It's always sad when "one of the Greats" falls silent.
Dale Bari
What place did they take in '85? That was incredible!!! Brass, percussion was freaking INCREDIBLE!!! 1985 DCI: Ahhhhhhh! This was my first year following DCI. I watched finals on the highlights broadcast in September. For years afterward, my favorite corps was Suncoast Sound, but I never got to see them live. While the corps placed 6th overall, the brass line was 5th in execution (6th field, 5th ensemble) - tied with Cavies, and 0.4 behind Madison (4th). But, Brass GE was 4th, 0.1 behind SCV (3rd) and 0.1 ahead of Madison. Perc exec was tied for 6th (Spirit), 0.5 behind Cavies (5th). Perc GE was also 6th, 0.1 behind the 4th place tie (BD & Scouts), 0.2 behind Cavies (3rd). The "Lick" was actually a few licks: the bari soloist (twice), the pit, and the basses. Topped off by the brass line blasting that chord! Gives me goose bumps just thinking about. And that's after first hearing it over 20 years ago. The bass run still blows people away when I play it for them. I absolutely agree: "Take it to the beach, Suncoast!"
