Bob J
OK I've been listening to some of the old stuff again, and am wondering when the switch from piston/rotor to 2 upright valves occurred. I know it didn't happen all at once for every corps, but some of these recordings I could swear you can tell the difference. It sounds like somewhere around '75-'76 to me. Some of you "old timers", please clue me in!
up4479
This was a phased in situation that began in 1977 with sopranos.

Some of you "old timers", please clue me in! It started in 77; with one voice allowed the first year (for most corps this was sopranos); Contras could switch any time as most corps usually only bought 1-2 a year. Not sure if all other voices could switch in 78 or if it was only one additional voice. apoch003
It was 1981 for the Argonauts. I played a piston/rotor french horn in 1980 before becoming drum major.
Walter
I believe baritones were available in 1978 !!
CrunchyTenor
Though 1977 was the first year for 2V sopranos, VK actually marched a set in 1976 under special permission to Zig Kanstul from DCI to field test the horns. '78 is the year we got the brass ultratones, but we could only get sop and baris in two valve so we had to get a whole set of one valve mellos and contras For some of you who think that DCI got stupid in the 21st century, that was a bonehead rule if I've ever heard one, and that's back in the day!!! The idea was to spread out the cost over several years, so every corps did not feel need to buy a complete set at once to stay competitive. But the road to hell is indeed paved with good ideas. dc oldtimer
Cavaliers switched sops on '77. Baritones were later. I think, 78 or 79. Contra's I think came MUCH later. like mid-80's but I might be wrong.
Jocko the Wonder Llama
We got 2-valve sops in '77, mellos and baris in'78, Contras in '80.
