Yes Sam, and I believe he brought a tenor drummer with him Mike. Also several other members have gone on to corps at various levels not only as members but as instructional staff, including, St. John's, Dutch Boy, Ventures, 27th (as mentioned), Oakland Crusaders, Empire Statesmen, The Cadets, Suncoast Sound. Currently there are still a few other band programs (some community some through the Secondary School system) in Ontario, such as Seaforth & District All Girls Band, Collingwood Collegiate Institute, E. L. Crossley High School, Windsor Youth Band (I believe there are still 2 bands in Windsor), Philippine Heritage Band. However most of these bands due primarily parades and concerts and are busy if not all summer a good part of the competitive season for drum corps. Also there is very little support/communication between the bands and the corps. Another reason that perhpas Canada has been losing it's corpssbesides what was mentioned including management, lack of financial support, the extreme difficulty in registering for non profit status, lack of exposure for recruitment etc....but the fact that while most American corps are in all days, many students in Ontario are still in school. The high school in my community's last day of classes is June 26. So for all the factors listed, the change in the demographic of the province, change in activities available, lack of exposure to any marching activity, drum corps in Canada is on life support, and there are a few of us trying to save it but maybe too few to make a real change.

Paul came to Sarnia first and marched in Buccaneers before going to Boston.

Regards,

John

How long was he in Sarnia before going to 27th Lancers?

Apparently he is back in Burlington helping off and on with their band.

Another great drummer from Ontario is Joe Shuker. He marched Cavs around 2000. He too worked in Burlington is now with Dutch Boys.

There is an almost endless list of those that marched south of the border and returned, or stayed south, to instruct in percussion, brass and auxillary.

One of the most "successful" is likely Jon Vanderkoff who had pretty modest, but deeply instilled, dc roots. He certainly took things to another level with his involvement with Blast etc etc ect......

But the question still remains....what happened? Remember when there was DCI Canada and then DCI bailed out? Was DCI clairvoyant and saw the demise of Canadian drum corps OR was there a conspiracy to rid Canada of drum corps???? Hmmmm makes you wonder aye?

How do you go from tons of corps to very little? Oh wait...look at NY state! How many competitive junior or DCI level corps are there? Nuff said!

Upstate is represented well in DCA....so all those 70's and 80's DC people are still doing it huh? Brigs, CRU, Empire and White Sabres. Sadly though Sun and Sky are inactive.

Canada had some really great drum corps and alot of those guys are where? Doing winter guards?

Most are not doing DC that's for sure. Many of the folks I know still play, some with DCA or Alumni groups, bot most not. Myself I play in small groups with legit instruments and enjoy the occasional DC reunion.
