44th Annual Drum Corps Grand Prix

Recommended Posts

donincardona asked:

"just for some trivia...........does anyone know who won the first grand prix? and no looking on the corps reps or senior history site."

The first Grand Prix was a junior and senior show, held in Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ, in 1965. Senior winner was your own Rochester Crusaders, and I believe the junior winner may have been St. Lucy's Cadets, though I am not totally sure about that.

Didn't look it up -- I was there as a spectator.

i knew you would be the one to get the answer john. well done. that show was the beginning of a great show that has continued all these years. it was one of my favorites to compete in. always great competition

" John you are right about the Crusaders, back in the day the host corps did not compete. But the Jr. Winner was the Bridgeport PAL and the only reason I know this is that Rich Warga won’t let me forget it. Because he was in that corps."

Ah, Bridgeport PAL! See, I had a feeling I might be wrong about Lucy's.

I know as late as 1973, my last competing year, the host never competed, just did an exhibition. We even got to rehearse on the field where the contest would be held, as did the Muchachos. When did this change? Sometime in the 1980's?

Also, can someone name the year that the Grand Prix was a juniors-only show? And who won it?

john i think it changed in 1971 as we competed in our own show the tournament of drums in rochester and we hosted it. i think the cabs didn't compete because it was their choice. in all the years i marched in the grand prix cabs never competed .

My first Grand Prix was 1970, my Jr. corps the Monarchs did an exhibition and the show was only a senior show that year.

FYI, as of last year the host corps can once again use the contest field as it’s practice site.

i remeber that show. it rained during our performance and that was it. no show. all that for nothing. so actually we did an exhibition to.......... sigh

Allen my friend,

We are all looking forward to the Statesmen’s return to the Grand Prix. As for the gas prices I’m working on a deal with the Smart car company, I think it will be cheaper to buy 63 Smart cars than to fill up three buses every weekend.

Keep the light on in the window the Caballeros will be traveling north on July 5th

Have Fun this weekend, we only have 4 parades gotta make the gas money.

Yes traveling to Rochester the day after the multitudes of parades should definitely make for an interesting trip!
