VK's guard and Incognito's guard became quite close during the season. I wouldn't be surprised if they altered their make-up as a shout out to their friends back home. It goes WAY back before that... at least in corps jokes. Back in the SNL days of the landshark (remember Chevy Chase?). So you're talking about the late 70's.
