neholgate
The first use of a physical representation of a shark came in 1983. It was a styrofoam fin mounted on a cafeteria tray trailed by the assistant drum major with fishing wire during the backfield warm-up. This was added fairly late in the season. It may have even been after seeing the Bridgemen doing a football act as part of backfield warm-ups at CYO Nationals. The playing of the Jaws theme had gone on most of the season, if not all of it.Also late in the season, a bried Jaws interloud was inserted into the production number, Shangrila. I had heard nothing of VK doing anything with Jaws in the 70's prior to getting the on-line alumni group going last season. It was all inside jokes. After Saturday rehearsals several of us would spend the night at Jack's ( or other corps Moms locations). At that time SNL was hot and Chevy Chase did the landshark skits (there was also a shark reference from Steve Martin monologue). Well, the jokes hung around as well as the instructors like McCool and Clark (and many of the kids did too). You marched early enough...I'm sure you heard the shark calls. When the corps decided to change their image that allowed the staff to bring jokes like that to the field. I'm sure Chas had a lot to do with it too! BigDale
If you look closely to the '84 Atlanta picture, you can see red velcro on top of the contras. This held the shark fins that we put onto the CBs during drum solo. There was also a shark teeth cover, which looked menacing unless you turned it upside down. It then made a smiley face shark. Guess which contra goofed that up at finals in '84. Note the fin, which was worn under the left arm.
