Big Thanks Jeff De Mello for DCA Clips

Recommended Posts

Thanks Jeff and DCA, I got to tell you it was a pleasant surprise to discover that DCA decided to have video tape clips for this forum. I wanted to go to Rochester but was needed at home....so this was the next best thing.

Thanks.

Ben

You're welcome!

And a big THANK YOU to John Donovan from DCP for asking me to join his team again this year! My wife, good friends, Drum Corps, and Moon Pies ... what more could you ask for!

It was awesome to see clips so soon after the corps had performed...DCI should take note!

Were you restricted to the side shots, tho? None of the corps sounded particularly powerful, probably because you weren't shooting down the bells....if you were able to move closer to the center (within the 45s would be great!) it'd be even better!

'Course...a pay per view internet stream of the entire deal would be even better!!

I had a lot of fun sitting between Jeff and John this weekend, and Jeff did such an awesome job the whole time which can obviously be seen from the clips. John also did a lot to get the videos up and properly displayed as fast as he could, as well as working with the photos. I am sure we made Jeff work extra hard when we forgot he was recording and would talk, or for example dumb me pounded the straw from my smoothie to get the wrapper off on the table where the camera was... sorry Jeff!

Sam, we were in the press box, which this year had a panel of the plexiglass that folded up like a window, so that is where we were recording. Towards the 50 was rest of the DCA VIP seating as well as a Staff area, so to record there I think would be pretty much impossible with the noise and lack of area to set up the cameras/computers/people to get the best coordination for this to go smoothly.

Jeff,

I do appreciate the video, something I've bugged JohnD about for a few years. Of course, we've all wanted it. I'm delighted it came to pass. Thanks DCA for accepting the idea.

JohnD was showing the quality of his Sony HD video-cam in a small park as a squirrel scurried over a statue. Fantastic!

Moon pies? This Dixie dude coulda used a Moon Pie fix.

OK....that explains it (no prob so long as the explanation makes sense)

I wonder if next year you could take a feed from the 50 yard line BVP camera and mikes instead of your own...at least for the 90 seconds clips you were posting....technically possible??

2 benefits....DCA gets a better camera/mike position for the prelims/finals clips, and then DCA could provide those same clips already done to BVP for use as ad copy...might help to generate more sales....

We weren't restricted to side shots, that's just where I was sitting! Fortunately, John set me in front of the only opening window in the box, so I did get way better sound than I would have elsewhere.

It was a very impromptu shoot, so I basically just set up one camera and my laptop and did it. John is in discussions with DCA about future refinements.
