Ranking Phantom's shows from this decade

Recommended Posts

In the spirit of the offseason here at DCP, I have randomly decided to rank all 9 of Phantom's shows from this decade from best to worst (comparatively). I didn't really put any deep thought into this besides what I think are the cleaner, more entertaining, and innovative shows.

1. 2005 Rhapsody

2. 2008 Spartacus (second by .025)

3. 2007 On Air

4. 2006 Faust (along with 08, perhaps the cleanest visually?)

5. 2003 Harmonic Journey

6. 2004 Apasionada (great horn book..cant stand watching it though)

7. 2001 Virtuoso

8. 2002 Heroic Sketches

9. 2000 Masters of Mystique (underrated ballad)

how would you rank some of these?

Interesting topic...I think I'll have to go with:

1) 2005 Rhapsody

2) 2003 Harmonic Journey

3) 2008 Sparticus

4) 2004 Apasionada

5) The rest....

1. 2008

2. 2006

This is a tough choice, and 2008 is probably helped by being fresher in the mind right now, but there's also an undeniable charm to seeing such a special show in person at my first finals. I don't think that charm will ever go away.

3. 2003 - Still raw performance-wise, but I love their selections that year

4. 2004 - Similar formula to 2003, but with Piazzolla. I consider this show to be underrated, generally

5. 2001

6. 2007

7. 2002 - Love Shostakovich, hated this hornline's performance

8. 2005 - Probably the most overrated show on DCP

9. 2000 - I don't hate it, but I had to put it last because I'm honestly not familiar with it.

Obviously just my opinion, but in order from top to bottom -

2008 - Spartacus (Total package - what Phantom - if not most corps - has always strived for)

2003 - Harmonic Journey (One of the classic "modern" corps shows, copied endlessly by HS's everywhere)

2005 - Rhapsody (Epitome of the "featured performer" show, and the whole package depends - and is sold by - one member)

2006 - Faust (Great "heavy" classical show, if not quite as spellbinding as those above)

2004 - Apasionada 874 (Very well performed, but felt kind of like a rehash of '03 in many ways)

2007 - On Air (Great first half show, kind of drags to me in second half - again, very well performed, though)

2001 - Virtuoso (Good, if not overwhelming, program, with great peaks and valleys throughout.)

2000 - The Masters of Mystique (Opposite of 2007 - slow 1st half, awesome ending!)

2002 - Heroic Sketches (sorry - this one felt tired and retreaded to me - left me flat except for the very end, which to be fair, was excelllllllent!)

1. 2003- 5 years later and this still gets a monumental amount of play.

2. 2005

3. 2006- To me, this was the original "Spartacus" show, with a better enacted story

4. 2008- I'm putting this one up there for the level of performance which cannot be denied, but honestly I feel that this one is achieving its status more on the basis of the fact that it led to Phantom's first outright championship

5. 2007

6. 2004

7. 2002

8. 2001

9. 2000

2006 - Emotional roller coaster

2003 - I wasn't going to DCI until I saw this show in So. Cal (Yeah, rough performance but great arranging and emotion)

2008 - Saw it in So Cal, but simply refused to go to Indy

2005 - Just for a change of pace

2004 - Yet another change of pace

2007 - Sorry, this show didn't work for me for whatever reason.

Can't comment on the rest because they are a blur of beige.
