Puppet
This is where we had to stay during the 1970 VFW Nationals in Miami. Marco Polo Hotel - Collins Avenue
HornsUp
This is where we had to stay during the 1970 VFW Nationals in Miami. Just about every unit "had to stay" at a resort hotel on the Collins Ave. strip. Many of us at the 1961 VFW Nats traveled to Miami in a chartered RR coach. Cabs in Miami Beach were cheap and plentiful, so several corps arrived at the contest site in a fleet of taxis. Meals were in the hotel restaurants. The waiters were from the first wave of Cuban refugees, many were professionals with advanced degrees. The kids today don't have any idea how rough it was for us. I am for the first time this year LMSLAOFAROTFL! This is what I mean when I hear about these (adult human beings 18-22) Kids who have to put up with no place to sleep, tough camps, eating out of the back of who knows what ... and on top of that these are healthy people?! They live on granola when we had to make do on mere bacon and eggs and toast and orange juice with butter and there were no McDonalds so we had to actually eat real meat as hamburgers and we didn't have breathing instructors ... "hey guys, try not to smoke for about 15 minutes before we go on, OK?" was like the unspoken word. And, because we were so young (yes, even in the late 60s!) we were not getting it on with the guard ... darn it 'cause the Marco Polo was like a Honeymoon hotel. If the Kids today could get a good night's sleep in a motel or hotel the way we did on tour - if they could have two sets of uniforms and march in a clean one or have a person take care of that kind of stuff while on tour OMG with the money they spend versus the money we didn't there are all kinds of national deficits that can be paid off. Big buses and sex just because does not a good night sleep make ... just saying. Puppet
Jocko the Wonder Llama
OMG! You only wore all that in the winter, right? Well, I did wear it during summer, only with a lot fewer pins. I would wear it now, but it seems to have.....shrunk in my closet over the last 35 years.
ajlisko
There were buttons ... and there were jackets! Every corps wore jackets ... Right?! Puppet Who are the two kids in the pic? I think I may have met them in the 60's at some I&E shows in Brooklyn ... :-)
lindap
Hi baja. I hope you don’t mind if I’m a little off topic. This is where we had our reunion. On July 29, 2011 we had a meet and greet and July 30th a BBQ on a beautiful sunny day. We shared memories, stories and agreed we’re grateful to have had wonderful drum corps experiences. lindap
This is one of the items on display at our 41st reunion, Debbie’s drum, that she kept since the 70’s. She said she answered an ad for ‘drummers with drums’ in 2003 and on one awesome evening, she shared the stage with Shania Twain during her Up tour, a drummer with a drum story ;)
lindap
My internet went down; um...one more At our 2011 reunion, I perused the photo albums, viewed the framed photos and reminisced. Drum corps was good to me and I wish to thank those that gave me the opportunity. Here’s a photo of a large, framed, glass covered photo, hence the reflective glare from the light bouncing off my digital camera. A few of us met again today for one more hug goodbye, until we meet again.
