Jeff Ream
ok, now the poll's working to me...While the Cadets forever changed the game in 83 and 87, no corps dominated, IMO like BD 86. in order: BD 86 Cadets 87 Cadets 83 BD 82 1984 Cadets 1985 Cadets 1988 Madison 1989 SCV 1980 BD 1981 SCV

Peel Paint
Lots of ways to interpret "best," of course, which is part of the fun. I take "best" to mean "most dominant." I'm with Jeff on this one, though I have to admit, I only saw the early 80s on TV and VHS and in early season shows. The scores don't always reflect what happened on the field, especially comparing one year to another. Blue Devils '86 (Channel One Suite revisited) were just crushingly dominant that year, in my opinion. DCI could have applied the slaughter rule in June, as far as I'm concerned, and I mean no disrespect to anyone else marching that season, but BD was just in a jaw-dropping different league, making the difficult seem effortless. Cadets '84 (West Side Story) weren't far behind. But my favorite show of the decade was the 2nd place '89 Phantom Regiment (New World Symphony), followed closely by 2nd place SCV '87 (Pictures at an Exhibition) and 1st place Cadets '87 (Appalachian Spring).
