it's a tradition that started in 1978. One of the buses got a flat tire due to a nail in the road. Everyone thought that was emblematic of our season, so we all went out and bought nails and hung them around our necks. Then we found out that a nail hanging around your neck can actually be dangerous - a lot of air mattresses were getting punctured - so we stopped wearing them. Coincidentally, the drum major podium needed repairs, so each of us pounded our nail into the podium so that it could withstand the wild gyrations of our drum major Doug "disco hips" Tholo.

Actually, I just made all that up. The nails are a recent development. They're a reminder of the acronym "never alone in life" which is a reference to the Scout brotherhood.

And they yell "SPOOLIE!"

Not sure what that's all about.
