The fire department confiscated our equipment and then had to let us use it again because we were asked to play for Presidential candidate Edmund Muskie. We are all arced up in the street and they see the police escort with lights on...we are cued to start playing....then the hearse comes by as we are playing. A few minutes later we are cued up again and Muskie finally arrives. Back to the fire hall where they waited for us to turn in all of our equipment again. We did get it all back by buying it but it was a lot of hard work by our dorector and some others.

I thought it would be interesting to hear everyone's stories about unusual or unexpected performances they had with drum corps.

My most unusual and unexpected occurred in 1989.

While with SCV we had a quick weekend swing down to southern California for some shows.

Out of the blue we get told that we have x minutes to shower, place instruments under the buses, grab a bite to eat, get your uniform and board the bus.

Where are we going? Many asked. No replies.

Okay, on the bus driving somewhere, but where?

Then we arrived at Angels stadium... oh, okay, we are going to perform at an Angels game, cool.

(Recall that during those days you did not really pay attention to news events.)

Well then the mystery was fully resolved while warming up in the lot and seeing the scoreboard... Welcome to the 1989 All-Star Game!

So very cool!

What are some of yours?

very cool!!

When I was with the Sunrisers back in 81 we were hired to play for a birthday party at some big time country club.(nothing but Mercedes and Rolls in the parking lot. )We did the show on the golf course. It turned out to be a birthday party for Nelson Doubleday the owner of the NY Mets.

Joe,

That was a 4th of July performance for Nelson Doubleday at his country/golf club. (We were told we could stay to watch the fireworks after dusk only to find we were all sitting under where the fireworks were coming down! )

Do you remember our Director (Len Haring) telling all of us we were NOT invited up to the club house (on top of the hill) after our performance.... and after Lenny finished taking almost everyone walked up the hill to the club house...LOL

Early 80's we (Sun) did several "Club Openings" out on the east end of LI..... Oh the stories!

And there was also a Sunrisers soprano player playing "parking attendant" at that gig. A story for another day.

Kilties always were an imposing bunch, but that is some major-league toughness.
