Hardly 'unique' 11 years ago. Why? Just because they used G trumpets instead of Bb?

It was a unique art form in that it utilized mostly instruments that were designed specifically for drum corps and only drum corps. There were no drum corps that utilized brass instruments that high school/college marching bands did, nor vice versa. So it was unique in its instrumentation...now, not so much.

Not sure I've ever seen this poll here, I think it's just assumed that most would walk. What do you think.

No way. If that happened, they would turn it into a marching band! Keep up the fight to keep Drum Corps Drum Corps.

You know that horns nowadays are specifically designed for the drum corps that use them, right?

Precisely. The lies, distortions, mis-truths, ignorance, changing the story..whatever, make those instruments only good for outside playing and makes the resale MUCH less viable. While at the same time a start up corps using just regular band grade instruments (remember how we were all sold this bill of goods for those that are history lite) will be penalized for not having a "specially" made band instrument for drum corps or marching band..oh the irony.

Actually, to make a quick point. Drum Corps is a TYPE of band that falls under MARCHING band. It is ONLY uniqueness at this point is all brass percussion guard. If you add woodwinds you are simply a marching band and no longer a drum and bugle corps. Words have meanings FYI. One would assume DCI would have to drop the Drum and Bugle Corps name in this instance regarding corporation and branding.

Why? It's the name they are known by. They still call it 'drum' even with all the other percussion...they still call it 'bugle' though they haven't played on bugles in decades...they still call it 'guard' even though they aren't guarding a darn thing.

Actually, to anyone with a music background understands that YES it was unique on G bugles. The overtone series is quite different on those instruments giving G horns a unique and characteristic sound.

I have a music background, and so what? It's hardly all that 'unique' to use g trumpets instead of Bb trumpets, not enough to get all worked up about.

IMHO, you are incorrect. Even an aircraft carrier take a while to stop after it's been torpedoed.

Not sure what that means. Without DCI in 1972, IMO by now the pullback by VFW/AL/CYO/PAL would be long done, and drum corps would be a distant memory.

So....you state you dont care for bands who adopt drum corps instrumentation.

You state drum corps are bands.

Basically you're admitting to not caring about drum corps.

Why are you here?

It is just what you are used to. No, a corps does not look 'cleaner' than a band of equal skill.

Musical effectiveness is not based on how loud. That is relative to the instrumentation being presented. IMO they should remove the size limits though if they add WW. Another 100 would be fine.

...and are used outdoors in all sorts of weather by 10's of thousands of HS and college bands.

Would there be some expense? Sure, add 80 WW and of course there would be some.

IMO it's a horrible idea to move HS bands in that direction. WW provide great moments in shows. I've never cared for bands that do that.

Here's where we agree. I think it fully appropriate to change the name, now that the genre has changed. I'm with you on this topic, MikeD.

We should not call these musical units " Drum and Bugle Corps with a Color Guard". It is simply disengenuous, as well a inaccurate description. Frankly, its not fair to these current musical marching bands, nor to the " Drum and Bugle Corps" that preceeded these fine musical marching units of today.

We've be told that " change is good and/ or inevitable ". If so, then why is there the relunctance then by so many who support such radical transformations to likewse not support the change in the name as well ? I never understood these folks logic. Why do they have a problem calling these units " marching music dance bands " or some such, when in reality this would be much more more accurate (and honest ) than calling them " Drum and Bugle Corps with Color Guards ". In other words, shouldn't transformative " change " also apply to the neccessary and logical changing of the naming of these DCI units too now ?
