Is your corps or non-profit on this list?

Recommended Posts

My local paper ran a story today about several non-profits at risk of losing their status as tax exempt for not filing returns. I think the total list is 6700 groups. Since you have to search state by state I just checked on a few local groups. The article does say that many groups might not be aware they have to file, since the rules were changed in 2006.

So, why not check for your local D&B corps and other groups...give them a heads up if they are on the list! Link to IRS.GOV list of groups.

From IRS.GOV "Charities and Non Profits" page.

"List of Organizations At Risk of Automatic Revocation of Tax-Exempt Status

Tax-exempt organizations that do not satisfy annual filing requirements for three consecutive years automatically lose their tax-exempt status. The IRS is providing one-time relief for such organizations that have filing due dates on or after May 17 and before October 15, 2010. The list includes organizations for which the IRS does not have a record of a required annual filing for 2007 and 2008, and whose 2009 return, due on or after May 17 and before October 15, 2010, has not yet been received.

The list, which was generated on June 30, 2010, includes only organizations with an annual filing requirement. Certain exempt organizations are exempt from this requirement. See Annual Exempt Organization Return: Who Must File

The list may be incomplete, as certain organizations may be at risk of automatic revocation even if their names do not appear on these lists:

Subordinates in group rulings for which the parent has not filed a required group return;

Very small section 501©(3) public charities not required to file an application for exemption;

Other section 501© organizations not required to file an application for exemption.

These organizations should check their records and determine whether they are at risk of automatic revocation because they have not satisfied annual filing requirements."

Lots of defunct corps in NJ, DE, PA. New York Skyliners Alumni of Freehold NJ is on the list. Are they still in business?

Remember the Facebook $20,000 contest? The Crossmen had two groups on the list, Crossmen Productions of Texas and Crossmen of DE (was DE or NJ). When you would do a search for the corps you would get either or both. Neither group got enough votes for the money, but had the old 501 c 3 not siphoned votes, Bones might have been in the running with the other 20 or so corps that won 20 grand.
