fsubone
Hey guys. This is something I was wondering about watching the Download of the Week, Star 1990. They had a female drum major, and I was wondering which was the first corps to make DCI Finals with a female drum major? Not trying to start some bid debate about feminism or anything, just an honest question. I know a big deal was made when SCV had their first female DM in 2009, didn't know who was the first one. Thought you guys would be the ones to ask.
84BDsop
The USUAL answer is Marcia Hansen, 1984 Phantom Regiment. But Star of Indiana's first DM in 1985 -- Karen Stein -- was also a DM with Bridgemen in 1983...although for some reason it's Marcia that's the trivia answer...maybe because Marcia was THE DM, while Karen was an Asst DM or Field Conductor?? She's been on this board before...maybe she'll answer it.
HornsUp
The correct answer would be Laurie Sloane who conducted the 1976 Guardsmen concert number "Final Analysis".

lindap
Thanks everybody. I didn't know it went back that far. Thanks for the history lesson. You guys are awesome Dawn Canning was co-DM for Seneca Optimists in 1976 and they made finals :) She was co-DM with me in 1975 but we didn't make finals :( My first year as DM was 72. Vicki Drummond was DM for Blue Rock in 1972. They didn't go to finals in 1972 but came in 3rd at the U.S. Open. Does that count?
BariBrian
Laurie Sloan of the Guardsmen was the first that I ever saw in the finals, and she was terrific (1976)
84BDsop
*is wondering, therefore, why Marcia Hansen always gets the credit....I remember VERY clearly hearing that she was the first female DM in the top 12....*

One of the GREAT DM's of my era, for sure. She had a wonderful command voice.
