Flying Under The Radar

Perhaps my comments were misunderstood. I said " they are the most innovative unit in DCI". This makes them " different ". I did not call for units to " all be the same ". That would in fact be " boring " in my opinion. It's also pretty

clear they don't do" the same thing" as others. I do believe that they are a" band." I don't use that phrase as a pjorative, nor did I criticize them for being a " band ". I liked them last year as a matter of fact. I just used the phrase "a band " as a form of accuracy. They use a combo drum set, and a rock guitarist playing a rock guitar. There is noone that is not honest that would not recognize that such a unit as NOT being a " Band ", (as this is what some " Bands have ")..... Look, I mean no disrespect to the Teal Sound Band at all. Seriously. As far as Bands go, they are much closer to the conventional Drum and Bugle Corps than some other Bands out there. But surely, one must see that any unit that has drum set combo performers and guitars out front with brass marchers doing skits complementing the unit behind, that this is in fact a " band ". What's wrong with accuracy, where there was no attempt by me at all to disparage the Teal Sound Band, when in fact I complemented them on their uniqueness and innovativeness ?

It's ok there's no need to explain yourself, I know exactly what you meant.

The previous season offered much to be impressed with, both musically and visually. Each corps presented something spectacular and memorable. Now, a half year later, there is one corps that still sticks out for me. Prior to last season I had never seen or heard them perform (although I had heard of them) and as their show came to a close, they had gained a new fan: The Academy.

/cheers to the Underdogs - shake the cages and unsettle the kennel again!

That's cool... (and an uncanny ability that you have too.. sometimes I've got to explain myself to be clearer. )

GOOD is GOOD . Different is Different.

Different does in NO way mean GOOD.

Exactly. " Different " does not mean " good " ( nor " bad " ) And as near as I can tell, nobody on this thread so far has said " different " is "good " or " bad ". ( Certainly not me ) So I don't know what prompted you to have us differentiate the difference. But thanks for sharing anyway.

I too have been a fan of the Academy; the last two seasons in particular. With the right show choice (IMO) this corps can be quite a competitor.

I am not so sure about their 2011 show choice....will have to wait and see...

So far Teal's different has been bad. Hope that changes in 2011.

Preshow in 2010 was the most memorable part of the show.

Adding a guitar or electric violin , EWI , et.... is not different. BOA has been doing it for years.

I'd be most appreciative of further commentary explaining exactly which BOA band uses these devices, to what degree, and to what effect? Name some bands. . . which years. . . what was played. . . how electronics were integrated. . . and to what degree of success.

Is music made? Is there audience reaction? What can be done to better integrate the amplified/electronic sound with the acoustic sound created by traditionally voiced brass and percussion? Or is there no place at all in your opinion?

Then please compare how you think Teal Sound has used them in the past (I know you haven't heard them this winter, except a small brass ensemble excerpt released on YouTube) and what WOULD make them different "good" in your opinion.

I'm always learning and growing -- so here's your chance. Educate me.

I promise I will not attempt to change your opinion -- you like what you like. But I am serious about the opportunity to educate me.

sincerely,

Chuck Naffier

I know you wern't responding to me, but since you are a current DCI Instructor/Arranger on here, could you educate me as to which Judge(s )judge the rock guitarist playing abilities ? A)What judged caption(s) is it on ? B)What exactly is the rock guitarist being judged on in terms of the level of the performer's mastery of the instrument ? C) What is the typical training and pedagogical ( or professional playing) experience that you are finding that the DCI judge(s) have in preparing themselves to properly evaluate the wide range of guitar playing abilities ( for example, from excellent playing level to novice playing level, demand, fingering, range, etc. ) by the rock guitarist performer in DCI field competition ? I think this could go a long way in helping to educate me ( and perhaps others on here) on this.

Thank you in advance Chuck Naffier.
