Sorry for the repost, but:

Along with FaustianMachine's topics, I had a question spark into my brain:

Between Cadets 2007 and Crown 2009, both 2nd place shows, who would have won?

Two shows I adore, one I played in. I think both corps were powerhouses. If these corps went head to head, who would have come out on top?

I know this is completely useless to ponder, given different years and what not, but maybe this could be a fun topic trend... different corps and different years competing.

What say YOU?

Cadets.

But that narration... It's not the fact of narration that bothers me. I thought BD's mc in 2005 played the part fantastically, and that the stuff was well-written. But Cadets 07 (and 08) simply didn't have compelling voice performers, imo. And the writing was dreadful. The only part I kind of found entertaining eventually got cut -- during the second number, when the mock-instructors were originally pretty mean to the guard and running drills... Hi-larious (and truer to life, let's be honest).

Anyway. The actual show? Beast. If the narration hadn't added an extra level of thematic development that the show itself couldn't actually compellingly fulfill, I think they would've won.

Narration, I know I know! I could give a dissertation about how 2007 differs from 2008 and the success vs. failure and all... and in some ways I wish I could apologize to the drum corps community for the whole narration thing.

I always hated it because they would always talk through the PIT FEATURES!!!

(I was in the pit)

I think Cadets. But it's tough, both definitely had their weaknesses. For Cadets, it was visual performance (incl. guard), percussion, maybe music ensemble. For Crown, it was almost entirely the effectiveness and execution of their visual. So, maybe Crown would win brass and percussion (and music overall), but Cadets would probably win GE and overall visual, for the win.
