I'm glad I'm not the only one still moved by 20 years later by 89 SCV. Steve Rondinero says in the commentary of Legacy DVD that some corp members were crying on the field. Is that true?

I don't know - I was living in Japan at that time but knowing SCV and the emotion they put into their shows those years I wouldn't be surprised. Just watching the video does it to me and if I had been at the show I would have been balling!

Softly as I Leave You....1980 Cavaliers.

I left that one off my earlier post, but yes, a classic. And once the guard maneuver was added we all called it "Softly as I Step on Your Face".

OK, just so I'm clear: there is no record (or at least none released as a single) featuring Jay-Z without Alicia Keys, but there is a later version featuring Alicia Keys without Jay-Z, is that right?

**checks "Alicia Keys Discography" entry on Wikipedia** -- no luck.

**searches videos for "Alicia Keys", "Empire State"** -- A-ha! Well, now. Hmm.

And that's the version that Madison has adapted. OK. Now I understand. I only knew the "Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys" version, which is all I ever heard on the radio. And I don't follow Glee, so this is completely new to me. Thank you for clarifying!

But given what I've said previously in this thread, about how the Jay-Z / Alicia Keys version consists largely of his navel-gazing and preening, I can see why they chose Keys' more selfless paean to the city.

I believe Alicia Keys' version is called Empire State of Mind (Part 2) Broken Down

I pulled it up on Rhapsody, so I could hear the "non-Madison" version, since I'd only heard the Scouts play it...two versions came up-one specifically listed Jay-Z/Alicia Keyes, the other was the cast of "Glee". The lyrics help to explain how it fits into the overall show theme, but I don't think one "needs" to know the lyrics-I loved the song the first time I ever heard it, which was on FN with the Scouts playing. I stand by my earlier statement, IMHO I think the Scouts arrangement sounds better, is played better and I'll take it over the others anytime.
