Fran Haring
great point,...........I think there is good reason to actually seed by score when you are potentialy in the hunt for voting status,............... Last year, corps were seeded by/within their declared class.... Class A or Open Class. I don't know if that rule was changed for this year. MetalTones2012
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Bucs have been undefeated for years? It would make sense to stay in Class A and win.

I don't know if that rule was changed for this year. I highly doubr it,............and I am not even saying my cited reason out-weighs reasons to seed within class,...........I am just saying that there is good reason for a class A corps in the position of possibly being a voting member to want to be seeded by score,...............I do agree with others here that this year could be the first time a class A corps (or two)becomes a voting member,........... Or how about Fusion made a decision that was financially smart for their organization? I know, I know, too logical

Antique Brass
To answer the original question posed on this thread (Why isn't Fusion in Open Class for DCA), I believe that each corps has to declare, before the start of the season, whether they would compete in Open Class or Class "A". Once the date for that declaration has passed, corps are not allowed to change their class. Personally, I believe that the management of FUSION made the right decision to stay in Class A for this season. They are drum corps savvy people and given their success so far, I'm sure that when they make the move to Open Class they will finish much closer to the top then the bottom.

From what I understand: June 1st is the last day a corps can declare their intent to compete in Class A. After this time, no Open Class corps can change to be in Class A. If a declared Class A corps grows in size during the season and surpasses the 65-member mark, they will automatically compete in Open Class instead. I do not know whether a Class A corps is allowed to move up to Open Class after the June 1st deadline without surpassing the member limit. Again, this is just what I have come to understand the rule to be, and I am most likely wrong in some aspects of it Edited August 1, 2011 by Spandy
bill
If I recall correctly (and I may be in error), I don't think there is a option to go from one class to another in any scenario; including an increase in size after June 1st. Once you declare, you are there. From what I understand: June 1st is the last day a corps can declare their intent to compete in Class A. Sayre Kulp
If you declare Class A and grow, you may still compete, but take a penalty for moving up mid season. You also stay Open Class for the remainder of the season. Unless something changed recently, I believe this is still the case.
