Erie August 7th

First time I've seen Surf's new uniforms, introduced last year, up close. I like them.

Solo snare on brushes opens the show from the front right corner of the field.

Bari solo plays the Death Theme from Carmen, followed by mellos backfield with a Kiss From a Rose quote.

Only five tubas. They're getting blown away by the rest of the horns.

Big hit as the horns turn front, but they don't stop for it, just keep marching. Crowd likes.

Killer bari solo to start the piece after the opening statement.

Uh oh, sounds like I have staff members sitting under where I am.

Yes, that is Bad Romance they're playing. I want to hit somebody. Lady Gaga doesn't deserve this kind of exposure.

Nice mix of Carmen and Bolero by the bari and trumpet duet.

Watch it, baris, you're not in tune and not together, a little mush mouth going on there.

Guard now bringing out fence props with rose bouquets. ####, this bari soloist on Kiss From a Rose is killer. Same one from last year's America?

Wow, he squeaked out a high note while marching! ####!

Watch the balance on the last chord of Rose, horn line. Couple mellos stuck out a little.

Now going into the finale of the show, it sounds like.

So far, I might have to put Cascades ahead of Surf from an entertainment standpoint. Surf's horn line is a little too unbalanced for my taste.

Next on the field is Teal Sound from Jacksonville, Florida. Their 2011 program is entitled "Sinvitation 7" and consists of:

Judith by A Perfect Circle

Weak & Powerless by A Perfect Circle

Money for Nothing by Dire Straits

Money by Pink Floyd

Music from Scrooged by Elfman, Danny

Sin of Pride by Naffier, Chuck

Gluttony by Naffier, Chuck

Sloth by Naffier, Chuck

160 BPM from Angels and Demons by Zimmer, Hans

This seems to be the year of the outrageous 80s hair in the guards, especially if the show involves sinning or vampires.
