1. Supposedly in 1987, Star of Indiana had several hired circus performers

One guy (Steve Ragatz)....originally hired only to teach juggling and other circus skills...ended up actually performing with the corps. So not hired to march originally, technically not paid to perform.

He was apparently very good at juggling two things at once, which not all of us can do.

OK, that myth is debunked. DCP may need a rumors page, like Snopes where these nitnoid and arcane factoids can be archived.

The only reason to pay for specific performers would be if they could impact the score. But it's highly unlikely that any single performer, no matter how great, will affect scores in any substantial way. The same money would be *much* better spent on hiring more or better staff instead.

Honestly, who cares if someone got paid to perform? Hey, more power to 'em...it's nice work if you can get it.

I don't have any problems with someone getting paid. I think it is nice that some corps have extra funds that allow them to do that. I just found it very unusual when the young man with Cadets was telling us that. I guess I just found it interesting with as many talented musicians that were already in the corps that one of them wouldn't have been talented enough to perform that vocal part. Also, not saying the young woman that was singing wasn't extremely talented, and I loved that solo performed by her. I had heard of soloists sometimes getting reduced tuition, but never had heard prior to that of someone actually receiving money to perform.

2. Depending on venue, paid performers may need to have union cards, esp in the northeast.

I don't know about that but that guy was really good! I loved them in 87. I have a cassette of the Tulsa show.
