50th Annual Drum Corps Grand Prix

Another thing that does not help the Bucs at all is the staging. With the front ensemble being staged on the field, the brass is confined to the rear half of the field and are never really in your face until the end after they "break on through". The whole show, you are thinking....what's going on....where is the volume? Then they give it to you at the end. It's just a shame that they can't give it to you for more of the show. I'm pretty sure you can't fix that at this point of the season.

well you can, but then also the concept kinda dies

Don't count on the ME results to stand. Not a great performance by that judge.

This wasn't about one individual calling the show. Put that in the bank.

Yea, as we discussed earlier the only numbers I question were the percussion spreads. I have no issues at all with his placements, but the spreads are something out of bizarro world.

Hey John, BTW, you mentioned '85 Suncoast- I wanted to tell you this:

I had the chance to work with a group that did "Simple Song and "Midnight in Miami", and those charts were two of the most enjoyable things I've ever taught in the activity. FUN to teach.

I have video of I think, the Prelims performance. When I need my heart lifted, I put that on and it lifts me. It's a really uplifting and positive show. Right now I'm thinking of the bass/bari duet near the end of the show- loads of fun, and the guy's on a high E at the end, which is upper exosphere for a G Bari.

Tell you what, I'm puttin' that on right now. It just makes every problem and concern go away. :satisfied:

agreed. looking at the recap, a couple of judges flip numbers, and ballgame further on.

It's July 15th. yet people freaking out like it's finals

Id be interested to know if you were actually at the show or is that just an assumption that the ME was lost? Being 3 rows from the top by the Judges I completely agree with that number. The opening of Bucs show had a major tear. Along with that their amped up pit, even being in the middle of the field was overbalanced the entire show. I'm not sure if the staffs of corps have the ability to control volume during the performance but that seems like a simple fix that wasn't made through out the show.

I normally refrain from posting in threads like this because of the fact most of the people that argue with you weren't even at the show in question. However, since this show is available on the fannetwork here are some observations.

Cabs are performing on a different date of the calendar than anyone else at the show. They have the total package this year and their brass line was on a different level than everyone else. I often wish that Brass judges had the same mindset as Percussion judges because the spread there was wayyy too close.

Bucs are performing a show that maybe their 2012 corps and maybe even 2013 corps might be able to pull off, but it doesn't seem like they have the horses that they had in the past (even though they are still fielding a fullsize corps). Its going to be a tough chore to pull it off this year with the design of the show hinging on the corps playing from primarily the back hash. That being said im a sucker for Shostakovich and I still enjoy what they're trying to accomplish... I just dont think its going to get there. And like John said I have no problem with the percussion placements but that number was ridiculous. Cabs, C2, and Fusion all have excellent lines and it is tough to imagine them 1.2 better than the next corps in that caption.

Fusion has a well thought out and cohesive program that is extremely entertaining. It looks like they might have taking the mantel from Empire in the entertainment category. The only issue I see going forward is that they might be performing over their book in a couple weeks, and despite the impressive guard they dont have the total visual program that the 2 corps ahead of them have.. and maybe not the level of CV this year either.

CV probably should have been closer to the top 3 and I thought their guard was probably underscored as well. The have some performance issues but it is the best show/corps they have ever put on the field.
