1980 - DCI Today...

Recommended Posts

Lots of talk lately about "theatrics," and the old days, music, themes, and GE...

watch the top 4 in 1980 to see how DCI has evolved to what it is today...

"listen to the crowd, Norman..."

OMG are you serious. Stahp. I know this topic was well intentioned but this will inevitably turn into another flame war

You used to post some great stuff here. Now I look at some of your replies and note a change in attitude.

I'm sorry you disapprove of my post. Let's continue another lively discussion where more people resort to personal attacks to give their opinion on old vs new DCI.

As someone who marched in 1980 I can tell you things were definitely different with respect to crowd reaction. It was definitely louder than a golf clap.

I can tell the difference just from recordings. That opening hit in 1988 Scouts doing Malaguena was inaudible because of the crowd holy moly.

audiences AND the activity used to be much different in 1980

what's amazing as far as "creativity and change" is to watch that 1980 winning show and then flip just 4 years ahead to 1984 and watch that one - crazy amount of "change" in just a few short years!

by 1990 the 1980 activity was extremely changed - and by 2000 we had Bb instruments and it bears a lot more similarity to today than that 1980 show does... the pace of change has really slowed down in some ways (with electronics obviously the big game changer since) -- heck even "modern" body movement was in the activity in a major way by Star 1992

From a newcomer's perspective, just comparing drum corps from 10 years ago seems a lot different than the drum corps of now to me. I'm not going to go into whether the changes are good or bad but I think that there's been more change in show design attitude than it seems at first glance.
